I found this interesting video explaining what Japanese idols are and how they became what they are. It mentions the biggest and most important idols, what they were about and their role in Japanese music history. It doesn't go into much depth but it's a good introduction with some extra attention paid to influential artists like Momoe, Seiko, Onyanko Club and AKB.
