Audrey & Santa

by: Saint Renjun

They said go to bed, be quiet and still,

All high pitched and haughty "he'll leave you, he will"
But young Audrey had learnt that adventure meant no sleep
Santa would come and all those rewards she would reap.
It went past 12 o'clock, young Audrey was tired
Her little head nodding off as she sat and conspired
The windows were icy, all cold from the snow
But the streetlights still glittered, leaving everything aglow
The clock hit 3, and then 4, and Audrey had given up hope
"St Nicholas won't come, what a cruel joke"
Audrey rose to her feet determined for bed
When she heard a loud voice shout as he said
"Go Rudolph, Fly Comet, On Dancer and Vixen"
"Faster Cupid, and Prancer and Dasher. Go Blitzen"
Audrey froze, mouth agape as they flew through the air
Good old Saint Nick with his sleigh and such dare
He was real, he was real, what wonderful proof!
With a banging thud, he landed on her roof.
Audrey jumped up and down, she couldn't believe her eyes.
As Santa flew down her chimney and startled back with surprise,
"You're awake dear child, don't you know the rules? No toys
For those who aren't asleep. No exception, not for girls or boys"
"But, Santa," cried Audrey in real distress
"I needed to see you," she breathily confessed
Santa chortled and laughed, his big belly shaking
"Am I all you imagined? Quite breathtaking"
Audrey nodded, filled with such glee
"Oh St Nick, you are magnificent"
"Bless, sweet child, such innocence"
"I'll go to bed, I promise and I won't tell a soul"
"You better not," Santa warned, "I'd have to leave you coal"
Audrey turned and ran towards the hall
But paused and stopped, "Will I ever see you again? Before I'm dead?"
Santa laughed and beamed and said
"There's 101 St Nick's, it's ever go grand
To reach up and down and all those far away lands
You'll see one of us, that I can guarantee if you're not too naughty

Merry Christmas, my dear, dear, dear Audrey"
