It would have cost more money if they delayed/cancelled the event.

The actual Australian open starts next week. These are only the qualifiers, no real big hitters are involved yet. So, no they wouldn't get a bigger crowd if they delayed it. But, it'll be interesting to see what happens when the actual tournament starts. When the federer's or the williams's of the sport are playing, they may be more vocal about it, and that could more likely lead to delays.
