Many idols receive a massive number of gifts from fans, including some expensive and lavish gifts. To prevent fans from spending a lot of money, many idols and entertainment company has refused to accept expensive gifts or to only accept fan letters. Still, many fans continue to express their appreciation. January 16 was Korean girl group BLACKPINK member, Jennie’s birthday. Because of her popularity, naturally, she received a lot of presents. A rumored gift list leaked online and raised the attention of many Korean netizens!

Many fans would choose to purchase albums, send gifts or letters to show appreciation for their idols. If fans want to connect with their idols more, they might go to fan meets or concerts. Some overseas fans might even travel by plane or travel across the ocean to see their idols. But these events cost a lot of money. In recent years, many fan clubs would opt to send expensive gifts; this slowly altered the original meaning of gift-giving.

Among the 546 thousand USD gifts, aside from Dior goods, a brand of which Jisoo is a spokesperson, Jisoo also received other name brand products such as Prada, Cartier, Gucci, even bags from luxury brand Hermes. The bag is so rare, you can’t even purchase it even if you have the money. The level of luxury is stunning!

Fans worrying the idea of gift-giving has been negatively altered

When the pile of gift lists was posted, Korean netizens quickly jumped into a heated discussion. Some netizens felt envious and shocked, others felt that Chinese and Korean fans were too over the top, “Wouldn’t it be more meaningful to use the money and donate to charity?”, “This is too extra?”, “Do the fans even gift expensive gifts like this to their parents?”, “Paying tributes to the Gods…” But some netizens also felt, “If the fans are happy, after all, it is their money…”, “If you are not a fan, you wouldn’t understand!”

In the past, fans would express gratitude through small tokens; now fans are worried that that gift-giving has evolved into expectations of sending expensive gifts. Fans are also worried about younger idols; this might skew their values if they are used to accepting expensive gifts from a young age.

This is why many entertainment companies and idol groups started to not accept gifts from fans, and only accept smaller gifts like hand-written letters in hopes to change this gift-giving culture. What does everyone think?

Idols from bigger tier companies do not need expensive gifts for real. I think gifts such as handwritten letters or doing charity in the name of your idols will be much more meaningful.

Thanks for the translation!

Gifts are all well and good, but to that extent is wrong in my opinion.
It doesn't teach very good values. 'It's the thought that counts', doesn't even matter anymore sigh?
