When did everyone start paying attention to Kpop groups? Are you still familiar with the Kpop groups that were popular 10 years ago in 2010? How were the popular groups then, like Girls Generation, Super Junior, Wonder Girls, 2PM, Big Bang, 2NE1, KARA different from groups nowadays? As the year is coming to an end, let us review 5 key changes of the Kpop performance stage!

1) High heels evolving into sneakers?

Extremely high heels appears to be one of the most iconic features of girl groups from 10 years ago! Girl groups like Girls Generation, SISTAR, T-ARA were always wearing incredibly high heels when singing and dancing. Girls Generations was even known as the generation of beautiful legs! Although high heels can have a lengthening effect on body proportions, they often cause a lot of stress on the knee and toes. Girls Generation Yuri used to say, “Since we have been performing with heels on for a long time, all the members’ toes were injured!”

Groups nowadays seem to wear less high heeled shoes (we must breathe a sigh of relief for everyone’s knees). Groups like IZ*ONE, GFriend, Oh My Girls, tend to wear sneakers or sometimes platformed shoes or slip-ons on stage. Without high heels, members give off less of an icy vibe. Members feel more approachable, and they exude a more cute and energetic feeling!

2) Ending the use of stage fans?

When we think of fans blowing on stage, of course we can’t forget our Lee Hyori. As part of the girl group founding generation, Hyori would always walk out on stage with wind blowing against her hair. Her dance stage always incorporated industrial fans to enhance her powerful queen aura. Her hair must be blowing against the breeze. The point is that without the fan blowing, the stage would certainly feel like something is missing.

Nowadays, it is rare to see the use of industrial fans on stage. At most, performance would be similar to that of (G)I-DLE; members would hold a mask or other simple props! It is rare to see large equipment on the dance stage.

3) Natural makeup replacing fully outlined makeup

The fully outlined eye makeup look was very popular among 2010 idol groups, such as girl group Brown Eyed Girls, or boy groups 2PM, and MBLAQ. Doesn’t matter if it was a guy or a girl, their eyes must be fully outlined before they head on stage. This makeup look placed a lot of emphasis on the eyes, favoring the fierce and powerful look.

For groups these days, like Twice, Red Velvet, or other boy groups, their makeup focuses more on looking fresh and natural. There isn’t as large of an emphasis on the eyes. Male idols would wear pastel color eyeshadow, some even with shimmer to increase the feeling of gentleness.

4) Jungle style power dance evolving into boy next door type of cute dance stage

10 years ago, jungle style is one of the most popular concepts. Just like the style of 2PM, idols favored showing muscles, and tearing their clothes apart on stage. 2PM Ok Taecyeon was even famous for tearing his clothes on stage!!! Not only that, but clothing style back then was very masculine, focusing mainly on dark colors! Also, dance choreography used to be more manly, almost feeling a bit like it was charged with male testosterones!

Compared to the masculine feel of older boy groups, boy groups these days like to incorporate more cute and androgynous dance moves, sometimes integrating a feeling of sexiness and seduction. This actually female fans more! In terms of outfits, there are a lot more use of pastel colors, and the color schemes are much more vibrant compared to previous generations. Just like BTS’ “Dynamite” stages, all of the dance stages are very cute, and group members would playfully interact with each other on the spot!

5) Group uniforms has turned into matching outfits?

Lastly, group outfits in the past used to have similar color schemes, and sometimes even the same style with all the group members wearing the same outfit! Group members won’t be mistaken for being in another group, and there is a strong concept to show everyone that the group members belong in the same group!

Nowadays, outfits focus more on highlighting the members’ unique characteristics. Sometimes stage outfits might not even have the same color scheme. For example, BLACKPINK and Itzy, the group members would wear outfits that highlight their personal charm or outfits that fit with the performance style. Groups no longer focus on team identity, and this actually helps fans quickly and clearly get to know each group member!

After seeing the 5 points above, don’t you truly feel the changes in generations? How will the Kpop dance stage evolve into in the next 5, 10 years? Let us anticipate! This is editor Chuu Cider, here to provide you the latest and most interesting KPOP news!

They are really bad for our legs, so I hope they will never be fashionable again. I know someone who wrecked her knee by dancing on them, and that was only once ever 1 or 2 weeks in the club.

Plus fewer high heels means that GGs can do more difficult choreo

It's better if we are seeing less high heels on stage. I know Everglow weared those for Adios and EU almost injured her ankles once.

High waisted pants to gave the impression to have longer legs

Forreal! I'm so down for complex choreography for girl groups. Look at LOONA! They certainly can't do any of those amazing choreography wearing heels (well, they probably can lol but it won't be fun wearing heels while doing that). Plus sneakers is just more comfortable overall. The girls are probably exhausted from practicing anyway, we don't need them to get more tired from wearing heels.
