In the beginning there was skepticism from the public regarding both seasons because there were notions that temporary groups wouldn't gather fans or the attention of the general public. In addition, because contracts from many different companies were involved, forming the group seemed too complicated.
However, both groups became successful beyond the public’s expectations. I.O.I had a solid debut with 'Dream Girls' in May 2016. They snatched high-end endorsements in Korea, such as Netmarble and Etude House. They also had hit songs such as 'Very Very Very', 'Pick Me Up' (a pre-debut song), and their last song before their disbandment, ‘Downpour’. Their last album ‘Miss Me?’ sold over 100,000 copies, a feat which is very rare for a girl group. It is safe to say that I.O.I was one of the top 5 girl groups in terms of success during their prime. The members were quite popular individually, especially the center Somi, and Sejeong, who was a household name. Both of them had individual endorsements and variety gigs. In addition, Chaeyeon had an acting role, and Sohye had variety show MC positions.
Wanna One became one of the top 3 boy groups from the moment they debuted in August 2017. I was an IOI stan, so much potential was wasted with several of the members. I'd give the world to redo some of their careers lol. If the reunion does happen at this point, i hope its handled right and the girls who need it can get a 2nd chance
Hmm i think I need a little more time with W1 members to really see how successful they were, but so far only a few of them really stand out to me success wise. But better off than IOI at this point in their careers imo. Im kinda interested to see how they'll turn out. But they'll at least have their fandom, even if the public leaves them

wanna one disbanded just 9 months ago. you should compare first year of disbandments. post i.o.i groups were the best selling female rookies of 2017 too.
it will be same eventually. gp doesn't follow groups just because they are post i.o.i or w1 in the long run. 2-3 lucky ones will thrive.

I feel like...I disagree.
You're comparing a group that disbanded in early 2017 to a group that disbanded late 2018. Post-IOI groups definitely had the hype you're saying only Wanna One members had; Pristin were monster rookies and Gugudan had hype with ''A Girl Like Me'' (should've been their debut, tbh). All a little after their disbandment with IOI. Obviously Wanna One members will have the hype longer because of their fanbases but it's too early to say they are more successful than the IOI girlies. Besides, having an acting career is nothing bad; imo I feel like it's better to have a safer playground to fall back on. Mina's starring in a drama that has received much praise this year, for example. It doesn't take away her being a member of Gugudan.
I also feel like one of the worse things with post-IOI groups is the lack of promo. Gugudan (using them as an example because they are the group I'm most familiar with) has received little to no promo throughout the years. Fame is something that will not last long if you don't feed it enough. All groups have had great songs that could've been hits but without the promo it's not there. Obviously, all of the girls' careers could've been handled much better (except for Chungha's which was the perfect idea). I'm hoping the labels' learn from their mistakes with the girls.

I also feel like one of the worse things with post-IOI groups is the lack of promo. Gugudan (using them as an example because they are the group I'm most familiar with) has received little to no promo throughout the years. Fame is something that will not last long if you don't feed it enough. All groups have had great songs that could've been hits but without the promo it's not there. Obviously, all of the girls' careers could've been handled much better (except for Chungha's which was the perfect idea). I'm hoping the labels' learn from their mistakes with the girls.

NuguSejeong should be a soloist alongside Gugudan (like HyunA with 4Minute). I know it causes akgaeism, but IOI groups already have that problem so who cares.

Interesting lessons for future Produce groups
The companies have really learned many lessons from the IOI experiment.
Thank you for acknowledging that many of their solo careers have fared pretty well. So many i-fans write off post-IOI careers as having bombed because their groups haven't done so hot. But just look at Sejeong, permanent spots on 4 different shows where she's been surrounded by A-listers, continuous number of CFs with big brands and huge stars, starring role in 2 major network dramas. Maybe Gugudan has been silent for a year, but her career is actually far from a flop. When you build general public recognition like she did, it doesn't just disappear overnight because you aren't as trendy anymore.
I think she missed the 'strike while the iron is hot' opportunity for a solo singing career. However she's diversified into multiple fields and has begun to build solid inroads for her career. Honestly there are few other idols much less Produce alumni who have gotten this level of results across all of these fields (acting, variety, CF, singing), especially in the time frame that she did it in. I think she can still build a great singing career as well, she's still very well liked and well recognized with GP.
