BY DRAGON OF THE WEST & POLARIS_TAE

#1. MA SIHUI - YISHI YIYANG
After trying her luck at CHUANG 2020, Ma Sihui has come out with a great new solo release in the form of "Yishi Yiyang" under the pseudonym of Macy M. The song is a great retro-sounding synth-dominant track that displays all of her strengths as an artist. Interestingly, the song is sung in Cantonese, one of the three languages (dialects?) that the artist has shown proficiency in. Throughout the music video, we see Ma Sihui consistently letting loose in ways that we wish we could. Instead of being stuck in that boring desk job that does nothing for anyone's happiness, sometimes everything just needs to be thrown to the wind in favour of having a good time with your friends while your responsibilities lay unattended to in the background!

#2. HAN SEUNGWOO - SACRIFICE
Han Seungwoo has had quite a rollercoaster past 13 months. After finishing third on Produce X 101 in mid-2019, his immediate future seemed to be set as leader of the project group X1 but following the untimely disbandment of the group after just one release, Seungwoo returned to his original group Victon, who have since seen quite a popularity boost and noticeable fandom growth. He has now deservingly been given his chance at a solo debut with the mini-album "Fame" and it's title track "Sacrifice" which features a trap-R&B production. The low-key groove shows a clear aim towards tackling a dark concept and while the verses aren't the best, it pulls through with the chorus that offers a welcome sense of melodic growth, as Seungwoo is given the chance to stretch his vocals. The ad-libs toward the end of the track make me quite intrigued about what he could have done if given a less restrictive arrangement. Two b-sides I'd highly recommend checking out are "Reply" and "Forest" which both show off just how good of a vocalist he truly is.

#3. SUPER M - 100
For their first of two pre-release singles leading up to a full-album release in late September, SuperM are back with their newest song "100" which feels like a natural extension from their 2019 debut with "Jopping". Filtered through SuperM’s enviable cast of performers, "100" promises pure joy as it allows all members of this super-group to shine through. Mark opens the first verse with his reliably magnetic rap, volleying the rapid-fire verses to Taeyong, Kai and Lucas, each of them bringing an undeniable charisma to their segments, however brief they might be. Given how the track is primarily hip-hop focused, vocalists Baekhyun, Taemin and Ten aren’t given quite as much to do but all three manage showstopper moments of their own. With the members already hyping up the upcoming album "Super One", and from what we've heard from some of the tracks confirmed to be featured on the release including "Tiger Inside" and "Dangerous Woman", we can be certain that the group is set to put out one of the most enjoyable K-pop albums of the year, and that makes me extremely excited.

#4. ONF - SUKHUMVIT SWIMMING
Following their participation on the show Road to Kingdom and their eventual finish as runners-up, ONF are back with their 5th mini-album "Spin-Off" and the title track "Sukhumvit Swimming". The music video is entertaining and dynamic, showcasing the members in an alternate universe taking on seemingly random character types in different settings including, but not limited to, a cowboy, a TukTuk driver, a guard. It also features strong fantastical elements such as time stops, teleportation, cloning, and time travel. The song’s lyrics about diving deep into a fiery passion would be otherwise cliche for a summer comeback, but ONF puts their own stamp on it. The group succeeds once more at executing an experimental take on popular music trends in K-pop

#5. ROTHY - OCEAN VIEW
Rothy is back with a great new trap-infused summer hit where we see her -- like the rest of us -- dreaming of the relatable wish of having full days of summer but with no one to spend it with. She hilariously attempts to fix it in the cutest ways, which include riding a tandem bike by herself or buying a meal for two. The track also comes with a great fun featuring from Exo's Chanyeol, which, acts as the best combination for another great hit when combined with her sweet and playful voice. She'll leave all of us wishing, just when - if ever - will we be able to spend the "Ocean View" with Rothy again once the pandemic crisis ends hopefully. "Ocean View" is one of those tracks that you will likely spend weeks, if not months obsessing over and it will likely never leave your playlist anytime soon!

#6. WONHO - LOSING YOU
Following his unfortunate withdrawal from Monsta X, Wonho is finally back to the music industry! After months of waiting, pre-release "Losing You" is the first taste of what a future Wonho discography might sound like. The song is entirely in English, seemingly Wonho's way of showing appreciation for his global fanbase being there for him throughout the entirety of his hardships. The lyrics are heartbreaking yet it kinda leaves a happy aftertaste for me. Even though he did personally ask fans to pay close notice the lyrics saying it's his message to them, once can't help but assume there's also a message to Monsta X. Wonho really expresses himself well through the singing and even in the music video, and the production on this manages to stay simplistic yet captivating.

#7. THE9 - SPHINX
THE9 has finally debuted! After being formed on the IQIYI survival show Youth With You 2 earlier this year, the group has now debuted with the track "SphinX". In typical IQIYI fashion SphinX -- in the same vein of UNINE's Set It Off -- is an experimental trap/hip-hop release that plays into all of the groups' strengths. However, if there's one thing that seems missing, it's the lack of vocal dominance on the track, which for a group that has a number of powerhouses in the form of Yu Yan and An Qi might be disappointing to some, as the song is largely dominated by a beat-drop chorus. THE9 has been the first girl group from a mainstream C-pop survival show to debut following the disbandment of Rocket Girls. But rather than the fresh concept that defined girl groups throughout 2019, THE9 has strayed from that path and carved out a concept that is more focused on the 'girl crush' niche, something that mainstream girl groups (barring a few) have rarely attempted. THE9 will become the only SphinX in your life when they attack you with their stunning concept and even more fantastic music video that will leave you with no choice but to stan!

#8. J.Y.PARK - WHEN WE DISCO (DUET WITH. SUNMI)
The man himself, Park Jinyoung (more famously known as JYP), is back with a new digital single "When We Disco" which is a duet with his former protégé, Sunmi. The song takes upon retro influences, an area both artists excel at, and above everything else, the song is fun which is a rather underrated quality in an industry filled with moody, badass concepts. Arguably the best quality of "When We Disco" is the fact that it clearly isn’t taking itself too seriously, and that’s evident from the very first moment as the introduction gives way to a synth-heavy italo-disco beat. The production feels suitably processed – sparse yet nailing the vibe of its era. Disco or not, I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to hear a K-pop track with consistent percussion that doesn’t force itself into unnecessary. JYP and Sunmi lean into the self-aware parody of it all, yet have enough respect for the source material to make this feel like an actual pop song and while the melody largely rests on aspects from its chosen genre, the two offer emotional performances that really bring it to life.

#9.BRAVE GIRLS - WE RIDE
Brave Girls made their first official comeback in three years with the digital single, "We Ride" a retro-sounding concept that will leave you wondering why in the world they weren't releasing more bangers like this during the years that they were on hiatus. The group is back as four and better than ever bringing us the best of city-pop in 2020 while they bring you on a car ride back to the 1980s in the accompanying music video to experience the song all over again in the years that the genre was in the years of its inception. Do you want to travel the past with Brave Girls? Because you certainly will once you experience this release for yourself first hand!

Because you certainly will once you experience this release for yourself first hand!

btw there's some typos in one of the news updates - "#4- GWSN's Lean, FANATIC's Doah & Cherry Bullet's Jiwon have all been selected as the new faces of "Skoolooks". We congratulate them in this new and exciting opportunity!"...the gwsn member should say lena, and doah's group is fanatics not fanatic
