#1. RED VELVET - QUEENDOM
Red Velvet took a break from group activities for pretty much the entirety of 2020 in order to allow time for Wendy to recover from an injury sustained in late 2019, and the rest of the members spent the year focusing on other activities, the most noteworthy being Irene & Seulgi debuting as the group's first unit. Wendy and Joy then released their solo debut albums this year in April and May respectively, but now the group are finally back as five, releasing their 6th mini-album titled Queendom with the lead single of the same name. Red Velvet have a great track record when it comes to summer comebacks, being able to elevate almost everything they touch. That being said, 'Queendom' doesn't quite give them much to work with, as the instrumental definitely plays things too safe. The post-chorus is definitely catchy though and the song would probably be lost without it as the verses don't offer many peaks while the chorus itself is unmemorable. For what has been their first comeback in over a year, it feels like SM played it way too safe with this release which is just odd when you consider some of the title tracks in the group's discography.

#2. TXT - LO$ER=LO♡ER
TXT are definitely on a roll this year as the group has already released their repackage album The Chaos Chapter: FIGHT OR ESCAPE with the title track 'LO$ER=LO♡ER'. The track follows on from their previous comeback's rock-influenced style, which makes sense going with the theme of the album as a whole. The song's co-writers, all 13 (!) of them, took a straightforward approach with the track, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. In the current K-pop climate that's filled with breakdowns and switch-ups at every turn, it has become quite rare to hear a song from a top group that's as uncomplicated as 'LO$ER=LO♡ER'. The chorus might not be as strong as that of 'LOVESONG', but the pre-chorus is explosive and leads into the laidback hook that go well with the music video's road trip vibes. With a catchy melody and chanting structure, TXT have proven once again that they are unapologetic when releasing earworms. The only nitpicky moment I would comment on is the fact that the song's finale could have done with a boost to give it a perfect ending.

#3. CRAVITY - GAS PEDAL
CRAVITY have released their 1st full-length album The Awakening: Written in the Stars with the title track 'Gas Pedal'. Where do we even start with this one? I'm losing count at the number of times companies decide to ruin promising concepts for songs by upending them with ill-fitting breakdowns, and CRAVITY have been victims of this on too many occasions. The pre-chorus adds a bit of momentum as the song's energy rises after the lackluster verse, but as we approach the chorus, it becomes apparent exactly which direction this is going to take and it reaches the unnecessary background which kills the flow of the song. The only redeeming factor is the bridge, which adds robust synth bass and offers a glimpse of the vocal bombast that’s missing from other segments of the track. Whoever at Starship gave the green light to have 'Gas Pedal' as the title track needs to re-evaluate things better, especially when b-sides 'Veni Vidi Vici' & 'Grand Prix' would have been far better picks.
