#1- NCT U - 90'S LOVE
Subunit NCT U has released their new single "90's Love" from their new album NCT - Resonance Part 2 as a conclusion to NCT 2020. This comes after the October release of NCT 2020 - Resonance Part 1 and its title tracks "Make A Wish" and "From Home"! For their new release, the group pays homage to the distinct style and sound of retro hip-hop, fitting of the song's title. "90s Love" dives headfirst into the new jack swing style with its recognizable instruments, beats, and relaxed rapping style. We are instantly hit with a drum beat, reminiscent of the time period and slowly transition into the members chanting over the instrumental. The verses are filled with laidback and smooth rapping that leads to a pre-chorus primarily driven by the members' vocals; the two parts create a nice contrast and slowly builds up energy that explodes in the chorus. The chorus is vocally driven but is chant-like in nature. Thus making it an extremely fun and carefree track, while also fully tapping into its nostalgic sound. The standout moment of the song is definitely its bridge; during the bridge, the song's in your face instrumental is put on the back burner in favour of putting the unit's heavenly vocals on full display. As for the music video, it takes on a very unique and cute hockey concept, visually making it one of the best of the year. Despite its focus on the sport, there are still retro '90s influences in the video, such as the members' clothing and hints of it in the choreography. This is definitely a track that will grow on you every listen, and we are going to continue to enjoy every minute of our relistens!

#2- NIZIU - STEP AND A STEP
JYP's new Japanese girl group NiziU made their official debut with the single "Step and a Step" following their pre-release single, "Make You Happy" which was released back in July. The group continues with their bright and bubbly concept, this time with a sound that is far less groovy than their previous release. The single's instrumental is rather simple with a light tropical sound and a steadily building drum beat. This slight tropical sound definitely brightens the track and gives it some much-needed energy. However, the group's powerful vocals are able to shine thanks to this bare instrumental. In addition, due to the song's production, we are able to appreciate the members' distinctive and raw vocals which somehow makes the track even more enjoyable. The chorus has two parts; first, the group sings a repetition of the line "a step and a step" over a newly introduced bassline, and this leads to the second part which has an explosion of energy. Here a catchy whistle melody is brought back as the girls sing about how "everything will be fine" and "everything will be okay", this only adds to the song's already cheery nature. During the bridge, the instrumental clears out to make way for the girl's wonderful vocals, and then we are hit with a charismatic and attitude-filled rap verse from the group's resident rappers. The lyrics for the song are uplifting and heartwarming, as we are encouraged to take things at our own personal pace and take things one step at a time. The music video goes along perfectly with its lyrics as the girls are shown to be visibly lost and looking for a door to their destination, they come to find in each other and their friendship. Overall, "Step and a Step" is an extremely cute and uplifting debut song, we cannot wait to see what their future discovery has in store!

#3- MENG MEIQI - MUTE
Following her debut with Rocket Girls 101, Meng Meiqi has been one of the most sought-after idols in the Chinese entertainment sector. Having appeared in multiple variety shows, as well as the 2020 blockbuster movie "Jade Dynasty" alongside rising idol-actor Xiao Zhan, she has made an even bigger name for herself. Following her graduation from the aforementioned group, it was uncertain whether Meng Meiqi would eventually re-join WJSN as its sub-vocalist and dancer and one-third of the Chinese trinity, or if she would continue to establish herself as an idol/entertainer within China. However, following the artist's recent release of her 2nd EP Love / Not Love, it has become apparent that she, along with the other two Chinese members, plan to focus the majority of their time within the Chinese entertainment industry for the foreseeable future. "MUTE" is an edgy experimental track that Meng Meiqi is credited both as the composer and lyricist. Interestingly, she has decided to forgo a vocal-dominated chorus for an empty instrumental-dominated one instead. Usually, I would do everything to avoid this type of song, but Meng Meiqi has managed to change my preferences by making "MUTE such an amazing track! "MUTE" effectively gives us a social commentary on the harsh reality of internet harassment and portrays the message of, "If you don't like me, just shut up," where she expresses that she is sick and tired of being criticized for everything she does and would rather people just shut up about their dislike for her instead of publishing it for the world to see. As we all can agree, words, just like actions, have the potential to push any person over the edge. Meng Meiqi has done it again! After last year's "Jiang," she has delivered another amazing cpop release that we will definitely be having on repeat for months on end!

#4- NCT U - WORK IT
"Work It" is the second title track to be promoted by NCT U for their new album NCT - Renosance Part 2, this single takes on a new lineup and a completely different sound from their other track "90's Love". By comparison, "Work It" is a sleeker and EDM-heavy song relying on a deep electro bass and a constant thumping synth. These elements are the main driving factors behind the verses, which only change to a slightly groovier sound during the pre-chorus in which the members ask "whatcha gonna do with it?" followed by a brief harmonized "oh". We are then met with a beat drop which leaves us with a purely instrumental chorus, the sound is the same as that in the verses but a loud droning synth is layered on. For the second half of the song, the verses are filled with rap which adds some character and life to the release. The bridge drops the sleek EDM, in exchange for a more lowkey and house vibe as this unit's vocalist serenade us before the beat drops once again into a darker sounding second part of the bridge. When we get to the chorus this time, more melodic synth layers have been added making it sound lighter and almost euphoric. These subtle changes make it an amazing and memorable ending to the song. The music video is a major contrast from the song's overall vibe as we get to see the members cutely dancing around and enjoying themselves. So if you were in need of a laidback and fun club-like dance song then NCT U has the answer for you in the form of "Work It"!

#5- WOO!AH! - BAD GIRL
Rookie girl group Woo!ah! made their first comeback this week with "Bad Girl" from the single album Curious following July's "Woo!ah!". The group continues with their quirky teen crush concept and sound, however this time the release is slightly more cohesive and refined. Upon the first listen of "Bad Girl" some may find the song to be a bit polarizing, as some sections seem to be completely different from others, the shifts between each being short and quick. The instrumental uses a bass line similar to ITZY's "Dalla Dalla" but drops it as it approaches the pre-chorus; here the song takes on a percussion-like synth, a new deep and quirky bass line, and goes for a softer sound. The first part of the chorus is vocally driven and extremely catchy, while the second half is a simple chant and somewhat empty. The second part of the song starts off with a lot of energy as the group shows off their charming and attention-demanding rap. One of the biggest surprises on the track takes place during the bridge, in which the group breaks out into a child-like chant; this part feels like a completely different song but adds an interesting flavour to the mix. After this, the group quickly transitions into an instrumental filled dance break, returning the song back to its original sound. The song's lyrics match its attitude perfectly, as they talk about wanting to be whoever they want, do whatever they want, and not being typical girls. As for the other tracks on the single album, "Round & Round" is the standout, it is far more subdued yet just as addictive as "Bad Girl" and is definitely worth checking out! "Bad Girl" is a great follow up track, and has the unexpected ability to hook you into replaying it nonstop!

#6- LU TING - HUMAN RULES
Lu Ting—our Social Media Lead's ultimate cpop bias—has released a brand-new song this week titled "Rules of the World" (or "Human Rules"), which comes on the eve of her last year with the group, as all 2nd generation members including herself are gearing up to graduate in 2021. However, it is presumed that Lu Ting will stay with the company following her addition to the SNH48 subunit AW9 and the registering of trademarks related to her name by Shiba. This release comes as the reward for winning the "2019 SNH48 Group 6th Request Time Best 50" along with the former group member Feng Xinduo. However, following the latter's departure from SNH48 earlier this year, Shiba has instead chosen to allow Lu Ting to release a brand-new solo track instead. "Rules of the World" is a fantastic dance track that showcases all of Lu Ting's unique talents while also showing off some aspects of styling that we have never seen before during all seven years of her career. She has never been blonde before and we are all here for blonde-haired Lu Ting! "Rules of the World" is a typical SNH48 stage release while, at the same time, incorporating interesting elements into the instrumental to create an addictive melody-driven chorus that explains all of the "Rules of the World" to us and why stanning Lu Ting is the only way to go!

#7- PURPLEKISS - MY HEART SKIP A BEAT
After almost six months since the initial teasers for PURPLE KISS were revealed to the public, the group has released their first pre-debut single as a unit. Sadly, the group's youngest member Swan was unable to participate due to a previously undisclosed illness. "My Heart Skip A Beat" discusses the group's feelings about being overcome with emotions following a single heart-fluttering encounter. PURPLEKISS is RBW's newest girl group following MAMAMOO and is vastly different from their vocal-oriented senior group. The group, just like MAMAMOO, showcases their top-tier vocals. However, unlike the former, this group has a much darker concept where they somewhat delve into the heavy rock niche that Dreamcatcher has been known for popularizing. At the moment, it is unknown whether this will remain their concept or if it is just a one-time thing. But if there is one thing that we can take away from PURPLEKISS, it is that, based on this single alone, we should surely be keeping an eye on them—because everyone needs more rock-inspired girl groups in their lives!
