wow aren’t the top 6 movies all from Disney? :omgwhat:
...and frozen and star wars are coming, so is going to be 8 soon :ohmygod:

there are some surprises like joker (and those 2 chinese movies) but this has been a bad year for anyone not called disney,
next year they are sort of taking a break to work on disney+ so at least the other studios are getting their chance

some boring stuff,

this is the site where reviews are posted

Rotten Tomatoes is an review-aggregation website for film and television.

IconScoreDescription
30px-Certified_Fresh_2018.svg.png
68–100%Certified Fresh: Wide-release films with a score of 75% or higher that are reviewed by at least 80 critics, of which 5 are "Top Critics", are given this seal. The "Certified Fresh" seal remains until the score drops below 70%. Films with limited releases require only 40 reviews (including 5 from "Top Critics") to qualify for this seal. For TV shows, only individual seasons are eligible for consideration, and each must have at least 20 critic reviews.
30px-Rotten_Tomatoes.svg.png
60–100%Fresh: Films or TV shows with a score of 60% or higher that do not meet the requirements for the "Certified Fresh" seal.
30px-Rotten_Tomatoes_rotten.svg.png
0–59%Rotten: Films or TV shows with a score of 0–59% receive this seal.

for the other stuff

for every dollar a movie makes in the US the studio gets .50 cents of dollar
for every dollar a movie makes outside the US the studio gets .33 cents of dollar
for every dollar a movie makes in china the studio gets .25 of a dollar

a movie that makes $100m in the US gets $50m profit
a movie that makes $100m outside the US gets $33m profit
a movie that makes $100m in China gets $25m profit

so this movie did $300m but the studio only got $108m in profit

source: forbes, deadline
this information can come handy for those times you want to become the life of the party :doge:

The 10 Biggest Box Office Flops of 2019 (So Far)

10. Dumbo

Dumbo_.jpg

Of all the movies announced by Disney, this was the one we all could have assumed would be the lowest grossing but still insanely bankable film. Tim Burton’s luster has been lost a bit and “Dumbo” has some strong iconography attached to it, but as a movie, it has not been one of the most popular. But still, it’s Disney making a movie about a cute animal. And yet, not so.
It did well compared to small movies. But when its budget is estimated at around $170 million, grossing a tad over $350 million worldwide is very unimpressive. At that budget, it would have to make half a billion to justify its existence. But it didn’t. One of the earliest signs that this was going to be an odd box office year.

9. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

The-Lego-Movie-2-The-Second-Part.jpg

“The Lego Movie” from 2014 was a smash. A true phenomenon. And “The Lego Batman Movie” was also a smash hit. But after the lackluster, barely-existent release of “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” the luster has started to come off the Lego franchise. And “The Lego Movie 2” continues that downward trend.
In tandem with lackluster reviews and really bad marketing, it was a shocking box office failure. The first movie made $469 million worldwide. This one? $191 million worldwide. That is a catastrophic drop-off. There is a better than slim chance that this marks the end of the Lego franchise, and maybe for good reason.

8. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla-King-of-The-Monsters.jpg

For a year, audiences were treated to unreal trailers for this new Godzilla movie. Each new trailer was as gorgeous and awe-inspiring as the next. Even if the movie wasn’t good, you could expect a big opening weekend just from the trailers getting people excited. And yet, this movie’s opening weekend was only $47 million. For the price tag of this monster, that is no bueno.
It’s doing better worldwide, but not good enough to make this an earner. A truly shocking turn of events. Warner Bros may have greatly miscalculated the world’s desire for a Kaiju cinematic universe, as they already have “Godzilla vs. Kong” in the can.

7. Men in Black: International

men-in-black-international.jpg

Throwing Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson into the forefront of a new MIB movie seemed like a sure bet. They were great together in “Thor: Ragnarok.” F. Gary Gray had just come off the one-two punch of “Straight Outta Compton” and “The Fate of the Furious.”
The franchise is one that is ripe for numerous entries, regardless of the talent in front of the screen. But the movie has been putting out nothing but severely uninspiring trailers for a while, and when the release came with such middling reviews, the writing was on the wall. The opening weekend tally of $30 million was not great. Kind of a killer. It’s not lighting things up overseas either, so this may very well mark the end of the franchise. For now at least.

6. Hellboy

hellboy-2019-first-trailer.jpg

When it was announced that Guillermo del Toro wouldn’t be allowed to finish his Hellboy trilogy so that Mike Mignola could reboot the franchise more to his liking, film fans were disappointed. So was Guillermo.
But at least he took the split as well as possible and went on to win scores of Oscars for “The Shape of Water.” Mignola, on the other hand, helped craft what is surely one of the worst comic book movies ever. And audiences could smell the stink off of the hilariously bad try-hard trailers desperate to look like a “Guardians of the Galaxy” knockoff.
It cost around $50 million to make, which is shocking since it looks cheaper than a Blumhouse movie. And it’s only taken in $46 million worldwide. This is a disaster. And it should come as a bit of a karmic piece of justice as Guillermo should have been allowed to make his movie. This franchise went from part two being one of the best comic book movies ever, to such a monstrous low.

5. The Kid Who Would Be King

The-Kid-Who-Would-Be-King.jpg

This was not all that surprising a bomb as its marketing materials were not great. It looked like a cheap little kids movie meant to cloyingly evoke the nostalgia of parents who grew up with Amblin movies. That it was helmed by a legit filmmaker in Joe Cornish was surprising, as the movie appeared to have no personality to it.

And then it came and went like a bolt of lightning. Costing around $59 million, it only grossed around $31 million worldwide. That’s embarrassing. That it couldn’t even do business in the U.K. was surprising. But overall, this just felt like a movie that was asked for by no one.

4. Alita: Battle Angel

gn-gift_guide_variable.jpg

Hollywood just keeps on chasing that anime ball. Despite ample evidence to the fact that the aesthetic of anime just doesn’t work in a live-action setting, and that the narratives are way too complicated for movies that aren’t guaranteed to last for more than one entry, they keep trying. And they keep failing.

James Cameron has been chasing this particular ball for a long time. But now that he can only focus on his truly in demand* “Avatar” sequels, he passed off the baton to the truly hack-like has-been Robert Rodriguez. And that worked out as well as a Robert Rodriguez-helmed movie usually does.

It apparently cost around $170 million to make, but that is probably a low ball estimate thanks to its long road to being made. It only made $85 million in the U.S. and more than $300 million worldwide. But with its budget, it makes this a big loser for FOX.

3. Shaft

Shaft.jpg

Taking a well-respected piece of black art and turning it into a cheap little piece of pablum didn’t work out too well for the filmmakers and the studio. “Shaft” as a franchise is an important piece of cinematic history. So of course, trying to turn it into the new “Ride Along” wasn’t gonna make it all that well-respected. But when you get Tim Story of “Ride Along” infamy and Samuel L. Jackson, you’d think the receipts would be impressive.

Thankfully, they haven’t been. It only made $8 million on its opening weekend, which is truly the definition of a bomb. It will not be a success. People aren’t liking it, so it won’t be some word-of-mouth smash. Insulting the legacy of a truly groundbreaking and important series was a bad decision.

2. Serenity

Serenity.jpeg

This was destined to be just another mid-budget movie released in the early year doldrums with no real attention paid to it. But it had a high-production sheen and the star presence of Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. And then it came out and the movie’s slack-jawed audacity made the movie a target for people to watch out for.

It bombed hard, costing around $25 million to make (how?!) and only coming in with around $11 million. This movie will probably last forever thanks to its ‘how did this get made?’ ready premise, but this was a shocking miscalculation on the filmmaker’s and studio’s part.

1. Dark Phoenix

x-men-dark-phoenix-2018_.jpg

This movie is emblematic of a blockbuster failure. It’s a movie that no one wanted. Essentially a remake of a prior series low meant to “fix” past mistakes. But it had to be heavily reshot and delayed for a year, and none of the marketing looked like anything worth all the time and money that was spent on it. No one cared. Even the actors looked bored by doing another one of these films after the truly awful “X-Men: Apocalypse.” Yet no one could have anticipated how hard this would bomb.

The official budget was around $200 million, but that is definitely not true with those extensive reshoots ballooning the budget. When it opened to $32 million on its opening weekend, people were shocked. The X-Men movies have been around for almost two decades now before the Disney purchase put an end to that piece of cinematic history.

For it to be so ignored by the public is wild. And the fact that its second weekend suffered the biggest second weekend drop-off ever, only earning around $8 million, is truly jaw-dropping. If Disney wasn’t putting an end to all of this, surely the movie-going public did.

Dark Fate to lose $120 Million.

so at this point is a tie with Dark phoenix for the the biggest bomb of the year :doge:

public doesn't care and i can't see any studio willing to get burned again trying to make a new,

so is safe to say that terminator is pretty much dead now

The film franchise is dead, but I wouldn't put it past them to try another tv show on a streaming platform in 5 yrs. or so. These services need new content and a series with a much smaller budget could help fill out their programming. Studios also aren't inclined to share their ratings or metrics, so no one would know if it's a failure. Until it gets cancelled, lol.
