Welcome to the official AKB48 Group (48G/AKBG) thread!

What is AKB48 Group?
AKB48 Group is a term for AKB48 and it's Japanese sister groups (SKE48, NMB48, HKT48, STU48 and NGT48).
Sometimes the international sister groups (MNL48, BNK48 etc) are also included.
This thread is meant to be mostly for the Japanese groups, but some discussion about the international groups is also fine.

AKB48:

AKB48 was created in 2005 by producer Akimoto Yasushi with the concept "idols you can meet".
Fans could meet the girls in two ways: either by watching stage shows at their theatre in Tokyo's Akihabara district (AKB is short for Akihabara), or by attending handshake events. The group was structured into different teams who would perform different stages at the theatre. In 2006, they released their first single, "Sakura No Hanabiratachi" but found limited success until a few years later.

SKE48:
SKE48 (Sakae48) is AKB's first sister group. SKE was created in 2008 and is based in Nagoya. SKE48 are managed by Keyholder.

NMB48:
NMB48 (Namba48) is a sister group based in Osaka. It was created in 2010 in collaboration with Yoshimoto, who also manage the group.

HKT48:
HKT48 (Hakata48) is a sister group based in Fukuoka that was created in 2011.

NGT48:
NGT (Niigata 48) is based in Niigata prefecture and was created in 2015.

STU48:
STU48 (Setouchi48) is based on a boat. The group was created in 2017. Their theatre is on a boat moving between ports.

FAQ:
How many members are there in AKBG?
As of June 2019 there are several hundred members spread out over the different groups, with AKB48 alone accounting for about 100 of them (including research students and Team 8 members).

How do people remember so many girls??? :ohmygod:
They don't :fab:

Who are the groups' leaders?
Mukaichi Mion is the general manager of all 48 groups.
The groups' teams also have their own leaders.

What are "aces"?
Aces are standout members. They're very popular and often also charismatic, talented and center the groups' singles.
Examples of aces include Atsuko Maeda, Yuko Oshima and Sayaka Yamamoto.

What are Kenkyuusei?
Kenkyuusei (research students) are members that haven't yet become "full" members. They fill in when ordinary members of a team are missing for a stage performance. Kenkyuusei can still participate in singles and albums.

Please leave any suggestions you have for how the OP can be improved. Any information I should add? More questions for the FAQ section? Videos?
More Miion content?
