"Why did you include foreign sales of some korean albums? Aren't they already included on Gaon?"

Several of SNSD's releases in South Korea have been licensed and distributed overseas by companies other than SM Entertainment, which may leave some people lost while calculating those albums' total sales. Since Gaon, the main korean chart, only reports the number of albums that were produced and sold or shipped from South Korea, a huge amount those international versions' sales were not counted by it, as they were both printed and distributed outside the country by non-korean companies - for example, Interscope Records in the United States or Universal Music in Japan (through sub-label EMI Records) and Taiwan.

For example, you can notice that each version of their best-selling korean album, The Boys, has a different ID/catalog number, release date and was licensed & distributed by a different label, while the regular version was distributed by KMP Holdings (that merged with Kt Music in 2013).

When calculating the total sales of a korean album, three types of sales are usually taken into account: domestic sales, sales of imported albums from South Korea (distributed by a korean company overseas) and local-printed versions (licensed and distributed by other companies).

Most calculations nowadays take into account only the first two categories, since most korean companies are responsible for production and distribution in both South Korea and abroad. However, in those cases where the album has local-printed versions, total sales are the sum of the numbers recorded by Gaon and local charts.

So, in conclusion, the reason why The Boys' worldwide sales are higher than those reported by Gaon is basically because it was released and distributed by different distributors in different countries, and not only by SM Entertainment/Kt Music - same thing is also valid for Oh!, Hoot, I Got A Boy etc.

"What are your estimates based on?"

The formula we used to estimate the downloads in this data record is the same that was used to calculate all pre-Gaon sales (including those from groups like Big Bang and 2NE1), and it's based mainly on official reports, chart positions, stream numbers and popular estimations for other songs that came out around the same time.

- Gee was downloaded at least 5 million times - that's the lowest possible number to guarantee its status as the best-selling song of the decade in South Korea (according to several sources);

- Based on chart positions, streaming numbers and known figures of songs that were released in the same year, we can assume that If and Baby Baby were downloaded 3 million and a million times, respectively.

That said, the actual numbers are likely to be way higher than those we got - some even estimate that Gee surpassed 7 million downloads in total. Even so, we tried to be as conservative as possible.

"Jessica is no longer a member, so why her individual works were recorded?"

She was once a member of Girls' Generation and promoted under the group's name, and as an important part of it, her contribution should be recognized. Things could be different if she wanted to erase all evidence of being in the group, but by all accounts, she still cherishes her time as SNSD. Therefore, we won't remove her presence in the group legacy, and all her works from before her departure were included.

"How many daesangs has SNSD won?"

When it comes to daesangs, there are two main criteria that are taken into account to define the number of grand prizes a group or a soloist has won.

The first one, that has been widely used by k-pop fans and journalists alike since the second generation, only acknowledges the grand prizes given by the seven - formerly five - biggest awards shows of the korean music industry: Asia Artist Awards, Golden Disk Awards, Korean Music Awards, Melon Music Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), Seoul Music Awards and Soribada Music Awards.

According to it, these are the daesangs under SNSD's belt:

This doesn't necessarily mean, however, that the second criterion is wrong, and you're free to use it if you want to.
