Police have launched a probe after a video and photos of a South Korean man allegedly threatening and beating a Japanese woman went viral on social media, they said Saturday.

"We have found the victim and the suspect in the alleged assault case, which occurred the previous day and contacted them," an official at Seoul Mapo Police Station said.

"We will call them in later in the day and investigate the details of the incident."

In the video that went viral online, the man threateningly follows the woman, hurling insults. The video accompanied multiple photos of the man allegedly beating the woman.

The woman reportedly said the man began threatening her near the university district of Hongdae in western Seoul when she ignored him as he followed her.

Police said they began looking into the case after receiving a report that a video of a South Korean man assaulting a Japanese woman is circulating online.

The incident took place amid escalating tensions between South Korea and Japan following Tokyo's export restrictions on South Korea in apparent retaliation against Seoul's top court rulings on wartime forced labor.

South Korea on Thursday announced its decision to withdraw from a bilateral military intelligence-sharing pact with Japan, citing a "grave change" in security cooperation conditions between the two countries. (Yonhap)

Small glimpse of positive out of this terrible incident: Majority of the koreans are outrage about this:

SEOUL--Video footage of a South Korean man assaulting a female Japanese tourist on a street here went viral as South Korean media and ordinary citizens rallied around the victim.

The footage showed the man grabbing the woman by the hair.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Hongik University, an area known as the “city for the young,” as relations between the two nations remain at an all-time low.

The footage, which spread like wildfire on social networking sites, prompted a sharp reaction with many people commenting that the violence was unacceptable.

Police on Aug. 24 questioned the man on a voluntary basis.
The incident was widely covered by the South Korean media. Many people uttered slogans on social media, such as “Let’s protect Japanese citizens.”
According to South Korea’s Dong-A Ilbo newspaper and other media reports, the man tried to strike up a conversation with the woman in Japanese on the morning of Aug. 23, but she didn’t pay him any attention. Enraged, he grabbed her by the hair.

The man admitted during questioning by police that he grabbed her by the hair but denied assaulting her.
Later, he was asked by a reporter if he attacked the woman because of the prevailing anti-Japan sentiment.
The man replied, “That has nothing to do with this.”

The Japanese woman, according to police, has asked that the man be severely punished.
South Koreans inundated social media sites with critical comments of the man's actions.
One called it “shameful” and another labeled it as a “vicious act regardless of nationality.”
According to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, at a rally held Aug. 24 in central Seoul to rail against Japan’s tightened export controls, a representative told the crowd, “If there are people who assault Japanese citizens, let’s actively stop it.”
