On June 8th, 2022, production company Phunky Studio officially announced that the idol audition show series 'After School Excitement' would be returning with a male version early next year. "PD [producing director] Han Dong Chul has begun preparing to produce a male version for Season 2," stated the agency. "It is currently scheduled to air in February or March of next year. Just like Season 1, it will be an audition for the birth of a talented K-pop group." The 12 final group members will be chosen by the viewers, dubbed Fantasy Makers, through online voting.

Timeline and Summary

Pre-Show: On August 23rd, MBC confirmed the show would be airing in early 2023.
On November 14th, the filming of its first episode took place.
On November 18th, 2022, the first video teaser was released.
Public recruitments were held from November 18th to December 16th, 2022 for any male.
On February 21st, contestants started to be announced through their self-introduction videos.
On February 27th, the music video for the show's theme song 'Fantasy' was released.

1st Semester: Jeon Soyeon

Introduction, Auditions & Grade Assessment

Episode 1: The 1st episode was originally scheduled to premiere on March 23th, but was delayed by one week to accommodate international broadcastings, so the show premiered on March 30th instead. The show was supposed to start with 55 contestants, but one trainee (Hinata) left before the show aired, so there were a total of 54 contestants available to be voted. In the 1st episode episode contestants were shown introducing themselves briefly and entering the waiting room. They got called one by one to audition in front of the four mentors and got sorted into Grades 1 to 3 according to how many mentors pressed the pick button after their performance. Unlike the 1st Season where the grades were assigned to the trainees roughly by age, this time the grade assessment reflected the trainees' abilities and potential shown in their audition, as measured by the mentors. Three or more picks guaranteed 1st Grade, while 1 or 2 guaranteed 2nd Grade, and no picks meant 3rd Grade. All trainees in 3rd Grade would be at risk of elimination.

Grade Re-Assessment, Preliminary Eliminations & 1st Ranking Announcement Ceremony

Episode 2: Premiered on March 6th. In this episode more auditions were shown, as well as the re-assessment mission where trainees from 1st and 2nd Grade could move grades according to how well they performed the theme song 'Fantasy'. Although 3rd Grade trainees didn't participate in the re-assessment, they also practiced Fantasy and one trainee got the chance of early admission by performing the song in front of the mentor responsible for the 1st Semester, Jeon Soyeon. Out of the 20 trainees in 3rd Grade, trainee Moon Hyunbin was saved through this mission and was able to join the dorms early, while the rest of 3rd Grade trainees would have to go through the MV Voting selection process, in which the 7 trainees with highest Individual fancam views would be saved, while the remaining would have to go home. Adding Moon Hyunbin who was saved early by Soyeon with the top 7 most ranked trainees, 8 trainees in total from 3rd Grade managed to survive the 1st Semester and move onto the next. The 12 eliminated contestants didn't get the chance to participate in the 1st Ranking Announcement Ceremony, so their ranking remained unknown. After the episode, the 1st Ranking Announcement Ceremony for the remaining 42 contestants was posted on Youtube as a separate video.

2nd Semester: Jang Wooyoung

1st Mission (Visual Pick) Team Selection, Heart-Fluttering Parts Contest & Performances

Episode 3: Premiered on March 13th. In this episode, the theme of the 2nd Semester was announced to be 'Visual Pick', and the assigned mentor Jang Wooyoung visited the dorms for the team selection for the mission. He brought 6 mannequins wearing different styles of clothing. Before Wooyoung arrived, each trainee was given 5 stickers that they could stick on the face of the trainees they thought were the top visuals of the show. While no context was given as to why they were doing it, the number of stickers determined the order in which the trainees got to pick the mannequin wearing the clothes that suited the concept they wanted to try for this mission. Each team must have 7 members, and the selection was done on a first come first serve basis. After all teams were formed, Wooyoung revealed the songs corresponding to each mannequin. The songs to be covered on the 2nd Semester mission were: ATEEZ's Deja Vu, BTS's Boy in Luv, TXT's Crown, THE BOYS's The Stealer, STRAY KIDS's Thunderous, and NCT U's 90s Love. It was explained that each song would have 2 'heart-fluttering parts', which the trainees would compete for in two different ways. The 1st heart fluttering part was obtained through the Runway Challenge, an event where each trainee would walk the runway in front of an audience of fansites, and whoever got the most pictures taken from each team would get the fluttering part. The 2nd fluttering part was given by the mentors, after each trainee performed a part of the song in front of them. From Team 'The Stealer', Ling Qi obtained the 1st fluttering part while Ivan obtained the 2nd one. From Team 'Thunderous', K-Soul obtained the 1st fluttering part while Jin Myungjae obtained the 2nd one. The performances for THE BOYS's The Stealer and STRAY KIDS's Thunderous were shown in this ep, and the result of the live voting determined that Lin Qi was the winner of the 2000 points benefit from Team 'The Stealer', while K-Soul and Keum Jinho tied for 1st place in Team 'Thunderous' and would share the benefit among themselves.

Remaining Performances & Ranks 36 and 6 Announcement

Episode 4: Premiered on March 20th. This episode showed the remaining four performances from the 2nd Semester Mission, NCT U's 90s Love, BTS's Boy in Luv, TXT's Crown, and ATEEZ's Deja Vu. The segment for'the 90s Love' Team got cut from most platforms due to song copyright. On top of that, this episode aired while the elimination was already filmed, meaning that the teams that got their performances delayed to Episode 4 didn't get a chance to show it before they went home. As the episode aired, some people shown for the first time in this episode were already gone without the audience even knowing, and they were also eligible to receive votes that would ultimately go to waste. In Team '90s Love', trainee Kang Minseo received the 1st fluttering part, while the 2nd was given to Hikaru. After the performance, Oh Hyeontae ended up securing the benefit for 1st place. Next was Team 'Boy In Luv', where trainee Kim Gyurae got the 1st fluttering part. The 2nd fluttering part was given to Song Duhyun. Trainee Kang Daehyeon got the benefit from being voted 1st place by the live audience. Team 'Crown' had Hikari for their 1st fluttering part, while Kang Irang got to do the 2nd one. Hikari got 1st place and took the benefit for this team. Lastly, Team 'Deja Vu' had Hong Sungmin perform the 1st fluttering part, while the 2nd one was given to Taeseon. Hong Sungmin obtained the benefit by placing 1st after the performance. After all the performances were shown, the trainees gathered for the 2nd Ranking Announcement Ceremony to take place in Episode 5. The chair placements revealed that a total of 37 trainees would survive while 5 would get eliminated. Ranks 36 and 6 were shown as a teaser for the next episode.
