Johnny's WEST Debuts on Top, King Gnu Leads Downloads on Japan Hot 100

Johnny's WEST's 13th single, "Big Shot!!," takes the top spot on this week's Billboard Japan Hot 100, dated Oct. 7 to 13, while King Gnu's new song, "Kasa" ("Umbrella"), leads downloads.

Johnny's WEST's 13th single, "Big Shot!!," sold 171,051 copies in its first week and takes the top spot on this week's Billboard Japan Hot 100, dated Oct. 7 to 13.

The seven-member boy band has been steadily increasing sales -- their previous single, "Amenochihare," sold 165,559 copies and the one before, "Homechigirisuto," sold 143,651 copies -- indicating that the rising Johnny's group is expanding its core fan base with each song they put out.

Meanwhile, top-tier Johnny's boy band Arashi suddenly dropped five popular songs from its catalog on streaming and YouTube, sending the Japanese Internet into a frenzy last week. These singles -- "Love So Sweet," "Monster," "A RA SHI," "Happiness," and "Truth" -- have charted on the Japan Hot 100 from Numbers 19 to 23 in that order, proving the five-member supergroup's enormous popularity.

Total video views for all five songs reached 16,358,098 times during the chart week, which is about 150,000 times more than the total for 13 songs in the top 300 for video views by Kenshi Yonezu, who has consistently dominated the metric recently.

King Gnu's new song, "Kasa" ("Umbrella"), leads downloads with 29,286 units, debuting at No. 9 on the list. The song still has room for improvement in the streaming department, so the breakout mixture rock band could continue to linger in the top 10 in the weeks to come.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, radio airplay, Twitter mentions, YouTube and GYAO! video views, Gracenote look-ups and audio streams from Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, AWA, Google Play Music, KKBOX, LINE MUSIC, Rakuten Music, RecMusic provided by Gfk Japan, as well as dHits and Uta Pass, and karaoke data from Daiichikosho and XING.
