J-pop duo Kinki Kids shot to No. 1 on the latest Billboard Japan Hot 100, dated Dec. 2 to 8, with "Hikari no Kehai." The pair's new single sold 176,310 copies and lead physical sales, along with Twitter mentions and look-ups. The song also performed well in radio airplay (No. 9) and collected points through these four metrics of the chart's methodology.
The veteran Johnny's group's new single fell short of the previous one called "Aitai, Aitai, Aenai" by about 100,000 copies in terms of first-week sales, but did much better in radio this time around, jumping from No. 21 for the previous single to No. 9 for this release.
Anime singer LiSA's "Gurenge" returns to the top 10 for the third time, this time jumping 15-5 to its highest position yet on the Japan Hot 100. Streams for the opener of the popular anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba have steadily increased for four consecutive weeks, and the song is being powered by this metric plus downloads and Twitter.
The boost is due to her slated appearance on the prestigious year-end Kohaku Uta Gassen live music program, as well as her single-take performance of the track on the new YouTube channel The First Take. She dropped her latest single called "unlasting" Wednesday (Dec. 11), which is also expected to climb the charts in the coming weeks.
Another act appearing on Kohaku this year is the five-member group Foorin. The Kenshi Yonezu-produced "Paprika" also returns to the top 10 for the sixth time, fueled by the same three metrics as LiSA's "Gurenge." The song written for NHK's 2020 Tokyo Olympics supporters' project is also expected to gather further steam as the Olympic year rolls around.
The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, radio airplay, Twitter mentions, YouTube and GYAO! video views, Gracenote look-ups, audio streams from Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, AWA, Google Play Music, KKBOX, LINE MUSIC, Rakuten Music, RecMusic provided by Gfk Japan, dHits, Uta Pass and Spotify, plus karaoke data from Daiichikosho and XING.
