Many young people often dream about debuting in a Kpop group and taking a risk in Korea. Yet the girl group trainee audition process is not easy at all. Just mere aspiration is not enough to land a chance to debut. Famous entertainment companies’ trainee criteria are often a popular discussion topic. An ex-SM Entertainment producer revealed the important criteria for the trainee audition. Let’s take a look!
A. Singing
SM has many vocalists, like Taeyeon, and Shinee’s Onew. Turns out producers like to pick songs with a higher note for trainee auditions. It is because singing techniques can be improved with practice, but the vocal range is more closely tied to personal tones and abilities. If a rookie has a higher range, they will have the ability to carry more styles of songs. He also states that if someone does not possess more than 8 degrees of vocal range, that person is likely not going to be picked up in an audition. No wonder many SM vocalist can sing songs with a really high tone.
B. Dancing
In terms of dancing, it looks though as if every single rookie can dance well! Dancing is a basic requirement to be a trainee. But during audition, there is something that especially attracts producers. Ex-SM Producer states they will not pick someone who specializes in a certain type of dance. He noted if someone is willing to learn, anyone can learn to dance! So, to them, the most important factor is the person’s natural talent and ability to pick up the beats. Because dancing is the ability to enjoy the music; if one’s body can naturally move according to the rhythm, then one is naturally talented! Also, he suggests wearing tight-fitting clothes, because if the clothing is too loose-fitting, it might affect the judges’ ability to see your rhythm.
C. Face of the group
Every group has a face of the group. This is someone who is shining in many aspects and their looks are especially outstanding. However, turns out appearance is not something entertainment companies care about the most; in fact, it is the trainee’s personal charm. Even if a trainee’s appearance is not especially outstanding, unless necessary, they won’t be forced to go through plastic surgery. Some entertainment companies might even provide beauty care as an alternative.
