Usually the oldest member of the group tends to be the leader,
but there are some groups where that isn't the case.

Share some groups where the leader isn't the oldest member!~

CL was the leader of 2NE1, yet she's actually the second youngest.

In OT5 TVXQ Yunho was the leader even though Jaejoong was the oldest member.

RM (leader) of BTS is the fourth oldest after Jin, Suga, and J-Hope

He's like the maknae of the hyung line and the hyung of the maknae line, smack in the middle

I knew Jin was the oldest, but for some reason I always assumed that RM was the second oldest :hehe:

What happens frequently is if the oldest member is not a Korean, a Korean is set as the leader. I don't know whether it is patriotism, or national chauvinism, or whatever.

I knew soyeon wasn't the oldest but I thought she was the second oldest😮
Lots of JYP groups have non oldest members as leaders (got7, twice, skz before woojin😭)
Not very related, but I think I prefer it when the oldest ISN'T the leader, maybe cause the age hierarchy seems more balanced that way.

GWSN : Miya is the oldest but it's Seoryoung the leader

Same case as Rocket Punch. Understandable because they aren't fluent in Korean, they are discovering a new country, so the oldest Korean member get to be the leader.

I guess most groups choose the most experienced/senior in trainee years instead of the oldest per se. Both seniority go hand to hand and it's normal to choose age experience over just age in workplaces. Usually when the oldest is chosen, it's because he or she is the most experienced and/or have/want the leadership quality and age is just a coincidence. Of course, each company/group have their own rules. Also, it's understandable some of the oldest may not want the extra burden, specially if they don't feel qualified to.

I'd be cool to have a graphic with the most prominent groups (divided by years as well, as it may reflect some changes during different time periods).
