Episode 1 - Para Sa Masa (lit. For The Masses) by Eraserheads
Hello, everyone!
I've decided to start a little project of introducing the forum to some of the best songs from my country, the Philippines.
We call the songs from our country as "OPM" which means Original Philippine Music.
To encourage interaction, I will be rewarding the best comment with ⨭10,000!
The winner will be announced in my next episode.
For my first episode, I decided to do my favorite OPM song, Para Sa Masa (lit. For the Masses) by Eraserheads
Eraserheads is a Filipino alternative rock band that rose to prominence in the 1990s and is dubbed as "The Beatles of the Philippines" due to their massive popularity and the long list of hits in the country. What makes me love this song is the mellow and slurred singing of the band's lead vocalist, Ely Buendia, as well as the catchy melody. It is very relaxing to listen to. Reading the lyrics, you can find at least one line describing yourself since it is a song for the masses. Personally, a couple of lines from the lyrics touched me when I first heard this song: "to the ones buried by the system" and "to the ones who have problems with school". I felt like this was being sung to me.
There have been many interpretations of what the song meant, and one of the most popular ones is that it's the composer and lead vocalist's admonition of his bandmates for failing to lift the masses. However, Buendia has stated that it's actually a collective calling out to the masses for their musical taste. He went on saying that he will never sing the song again because he's embarrassed by the song's condescending tone.

This is for the masses
To all the ones who lost hope
To all the ones we were together with
To all of the difficulties and sufferings
Do you still remember?
We gave you joy
A few years have passed
The colors of the world have faded
A few things have also changed
Inevitable, for we are only humans
Will you be able to forgive me
If I did not do as you wish
la la la la la la la la
la la la la la la la
la la la la la la la la
la la la la la la la
I tried to lift you up (yeah)
But you refused to go
This is for all the masses
To all the ones who got buried by the system
To all the ones we were friends with
To all the ones who like love songs and dramas
To all the ones who cannot read
To all the ones who have problems with school
To all the ones who are fans of Sharon Cuneta
To all the ones who have problems with money
To all the masses (to all the masses)
To all the masses (to all the masses)
To all the masses (to all the masses)
To all the masses (to all the masses)
Do not let this be
Give yourself some respect

Thank you for compiling this The translated lyrics are so touching! I wish the song melody were more dynamic though but that's just my preference hahaha

Interesting series topic, anticipating hearing more about OPM with ur project. I've only heard a few songs from the Philippines
The way i interpret the song and how the writers meant for it to be are very different, i thought this was a song written during some kind of country conflict, it gives me that touching kind of vibe.
It's pretty catchy and the lyrics are good. The more I listen to it the more i like it, although i wish it had some kick to it, like a drum maybe, but it's already pretty good as it is just my personal preference
Honestly i like this a lot

nice observation :yagotit: one of the popular opinions is also that it's related to the People Power Revolution that was organized to oust the Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1983. Especially since the band is known for using their songs to reference significant events in history.Interesting series topic, anticipating hearing more about OPM with ur project.
