The second half of the 70th edition of NHK's year end music show Kouhaku Uta Gassen recorded a user rating* of 37.3% in the Kanto area, down 4.2% from the previous year. This makes it the lowest ever rating for the music show, surpassing the previous low of 39.2% in 2015 and falling below 40% for the first time in two years. The first half recorded average ratings of 34.7%.

As for the Kansai ratings, the first half recorded 31.9% (down from 35.2%) and the second half recorded 36.2% (down from 40.5%).

Yeah, Kohaku's viewership has been trending downwards for a while now. Last year's (69th) was slightly higher than the year before, but overall, people have tons more things to watch during the year-end. Back in its heydays, there really wasn't much options or competition. Nowadays, people have moved away from TV to streaming services and places like Youtube.

I think the year end shows, both in Japan and Korea, will probably be phased out in this decade because of the changed media forms. BTS will probably not bother with the year end shows; IU stopped it on 2014 and only stars when she is the host. As the older singers in Japanese entertainment pass on, the Kohaku will also pass on to history.

The general public is not interested in the kouhaku like in the past. They have other entertainment options.

I agree, but it's a surprisingly big drop.
The line-ups look pretty decent, especially on the male side. Maybe it's a result of missing out on big names like Namie Amuro, Yonezu Kenshi and Southern All Stars. Looking at the performance list, a big portion of the artists are also performing old songs (AKB is still performing KFC). That's not very exciting.

But maybe it's due to people watching it online? It's a bit early to draw conclusions.

Last year (2018), there were big stars like Kenshi Yonezu and Southern All-Stars and these acts were considered special guests. They're the reason why Kohaku's rating got higher than 2017.

This year, Kenshi also appears but he only presents the Arashi's performance of their new song "Kaito". He doesn't perform one song. Also the special guests are not that exciting for some viewers. Mariya Takeuchi and Beat Takeshi are special guests, but they don't have massive hype compared to Kenshi and Southern All-Stars.

2018 also had Aimyon. 2019 had KISS, but I don't think they had much crowd-pulling power LOL.

errrr.. They don't have as much hype as Kenshi. I think the rating might get higher if Kohaku invites a band like Mr. Children or Southern All-Stars as a special guest that is popular among all ages.

plus its becoming repetitiously bland
