But a friend of mine said I sound like a 'witch' when I say it.

soft spoken and affectionate. Usually a witch felt menacing tone when they said it in stories... aka Hansel and Gretel.

I find that some people associate words with a particular connotation/feeling so even if you're not using any tone, they assume things based on what you've said

I'm so used to calling kids 'buddy' at work that I've started to call other kids around me that too. In my heritage, 'buddy' is a word that's very rarely used so my cousins and the kids I tutor as a side hustle always give me this look when I accidentally call them that haha
