"INTERNATIONAL PRIDE MONTH"
BY POLARIS_TAE

We're back this month with a new edition to our long out-of-commission listicle series, Plusdays! This time we're celebrating International Pride Month which officially took place last month in June with an article that highlights various idols who have walked the path of trailblazing allies, both past and present, as well as sharing some Kpop releases that we feel further empower others during such an exciting occasion. With that said, let's look at the ten idols that have shown their support to the LGBT community!

#1: MAMAMOO - National Coming Out day & sharing messages of self-love and acceptance

MAMAMOO, throughout their careers — both as a group, as well as within their individual solo careers — have been staunch supporters of LGBT rights and movements. This can be seen throughout their public support for LGBT artists such as Harisu the first openly transgender South Korean entertainer and the Hong Kong singer-actor, Leslie Cheung. Whom Hwasa expressed her admiration of in an episode of 'I Live Alone'. Cheung, a bisexual Hong Kong soloist — known for his roles in Farewell My Concubine & A Better Tomorrow — sadly passed away in 2003. The singer had been in a relationship with his male partner for twenty years up to the latter's tragic death in 2003. Moonbyul has additionally shown vocal support for the community through her consistent updates during 'National Coming Out Day'. In 2017 she shared: "Whether it’s men or women, they’re all the same people. They’re people you can love. And you can’t say one or the other is wrong. People simply have different thoughts, they aren’t wrong". The group has also worked hard to show their support for their LGBT fans in various ways. Moonbyul has been shown to frequently employ the use of gender-neutral pronouns throughout her work. Meanwhile, Hwasa blessed us with the anthem, 'I Love My Body' in 2023 with a message about self-love and acceptance that anyone looking to jump in and celebrate Pride Month will surely enjoy!

#2: Loona incl. Loosssemble, Yves, Chuu & more - Girls Night, appreciating their LGBT fanbase & more

Loona, in each of their iterations, have been outspoken allies towards the LGBT community. From the inherently queer plotline of Chuu's pre-debut solo single, 'Heart Attack' to the groups' response to their hefty queer fanbase. When asked about why the group had so many queer fans, Yves replied by stating that she had heard that the LGBT community was really interested in the LGBT references within her pre-debut solo single 'New' and Chuu's 'Heart Attack'. When referring to the lesbian-focused love line within the two music videos, she shared: “When the song was being written and the video filmed, we didn’t see it like that. For us, it was a story about yearning, but we were also thankful when it was translated that way.” Additionally, she shared that the group wanted to go "beyond gender, race, and nationality." Meanwhile, another Loona-associated group — Loossemble — recently made their return with 'Girls Night', an empowering anthem about breaking societal expectations and celebrating each other. If your music tastes are anything like ours, then 'Girls Night' will be the perfect soundtrack to celebrate Pride Month as well!

#3: SHINee's Jonghyun - A champion of social causes

Prior to his death in 2019, SHINee's Jonghyun was known as an advocate and ally for various social causes. One of them was his immense support for various causes throughout the LGBT+ community. Throughout this period of South Korean history, there were several instances of discrimination faced by the wider LGBT community. One such event was the marriage ceremony of Kim Jo Kwang-soo in 2013. Which was interrupted in 2013 by a protestor who verbally abused the couple and threw garbage (and faeces) at the couple and their attending guests. He also threw his support behind the community during the 'Annyeong, I'm Not Okay' movement. Which was a college protest during the mid-2010s that sought to protest against privatisation and censorship throughout South Korea. Jonghyun publicly supported a bisexual transgender student who, as a part of the 'Annyeong, I'm Not Okay' movement was seeking to highlight the severe mistreatment and discrimination faced by queer individuals across South Korea. He later personally messaged this individual to let them know that he supported them. The idol also criticized the government measure that would change the South Korean standard school curriculum into a more conservative style of teaching and education. At the time, the South Korean Ministry of Education was seeking to adjust the national school books to include both revisionist histories by eliminating any mention of the Geochang massacre, removing Park Chung-hee's position as a military dictator in the South Korean school history books, the after of the current Prime minister — Park Geun-Hye — at the time. It was also reported that there were plans to adjust the school books to claim that homosexuality is morally wrong. Overall, Jonghyun was a trailblazer in the mission towards a fair and just society for all and we hope that you can appreciate the idol for all the good he did throughout his life in the spotlight.

#4: Jooheon/Joohoney - THE CLAN & LGBT concepts + support for marginalised fans

Monsta X & Jooheon, in particular, have been incredibly supportive of the LGBT community. This can be seen both in their music, as well as their actions. Their The Clan album series, beginning in 2016, was particularly heavy-handed with its LGBT implications. From the implied relationship between Hyungwon & Minhyuk in their 'All In' music video to the empowering lyrics both within The Clan album series as well as in their past hits such as 'Hero' showcasing that the group is more than willing to put their support behind marginalised groups or individuals. Furthermore, the group members have showcased their support towards the LGBT community through actions. During the 2019 VLive awards show, V Heartbeat Monsta X's Joohoney took to the stage to share an inclusive awards speech by stating: "No matter who you are, who you love, Monsta X is always supporting Monbebe so keep supporting us. Thank you, I love you. Be happy, stay happy!" Furthermore, the members also expressed their support to a fan who was facing difficulty due to their parent's lack of acceptance towards their sexuality. In response to this, Jooheon, and former member Wonho, offered words of encouragement by expressing that the fan should face this situation head-on in order to attempt to resolve this issue with their family while also offering some words of encouragement at the end.
