Wii was one of Nintendo's most successful consoles ever, but Switch just managed to leap past it to become the company's third best-selling system. The latest numbers come from Nintendo's quarterly results, which have the Switch at 103.54 million units sold, putting it a hair above Wii's already impressive lifetime sales of 101.63 million.
Switch still has a ways to go to reach the top and surpass the two champions. Nintendo's most successful portables—Game Boy and DS—managed to move 118.69 million and 154.02 million units, respectively. There's still time, though, because Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa says the console is only in the middle of its lifecycle.
Furukawa went on to say, “The Switch is ready to break a pattern of our past consoles that saw momentum weakening in their sixth year on the market and grow further.”
2022 will see a bit of a slowdown thanks to chip shortages, however. Nintendo previously reduced plans to ship 30 million units by this March to 24 million. As of these quarterly results, though, the target projections have been lowered a bit further to 23 million.
In addition to the hardware update, the quarterly results revealed some pretty amazing software statistics. During the period between October and December 2021, Animal Crossing: New Horizons crossed the 10 million units sold mark in Japan alone. That puts it way past the record of 6.81 million units for 1985's Super Mario Bros., making it the best-selling video game ever in Japan.

Every time I see the Wii mentioned nowdays it bums me out that they didn't keep all of the motion-capturing software/hardware when they made the Switch.
I can only imagine how good a modern Wii Sports would be....

Pokémon Legends: Arceus? Nah, I'm not interested. I would love some DLC for New Pokémon Snap, though!cool did u try new pokman game ?
Well, it's intentionally very pleasant with high customization that's easily accessible to many demographics, all the way from small children to the elderly, for example, and it's portable which probably makes it very easy for the Japanese to play during their commutes on the trains. It would make sense something like that is selling so well, in my opinion.I don't understand Animal Crossing hype

Nintendo really lucked out with New Horizons releasing right around the start of the pandemic. I don't think it would have seen nearly as much success if a lot of people at the time weren't stuck indoors.

I played AC: New Leaf and it was just really boring and tedious to me. It seemed like a chore and what I've heard from people playing New Horizons is that they also found it stressful after a while as people started comparing islands. But my main concern is that the game play doesn't seem fun.Well, it's intentionally very pleasant with high customization that's easily accessible to many demographics, all the way from small children to the elderly, for example, and it's portable which probably makes it very easy for the Japanese to play during their commutes on the trains.
