I didn't think much about this before, until I watched NCT 127's latest video, Favorite (Vampire). I know there are some groups, like NCT 127, where the perfomance seems to be really important, but the MV directors/entertaiment companies should consider the lyrics and concept too.
They sold me a vampire concept (through instagram), but i only saw two members with fangs, one member with unnatural eyes, and a lot of CGI and camera moves to "showcase" the vampire powers. This was about a tragic love story but i didn't see it AT ALL. If they were worried about fans getting jealous because of a girl starring in the MV, there were other options.
But the main reason i made this thread: i honestly think...they showed too much choreography: the intro, the 3 choruses, the break dance, and the outro. The most interesting parts were showed in the MV, so watching the live preformance don't add anything else.
In the previous song Sticker, it didn't bother me, because there wasn't any story behind, just a concept. The dance was the main theme in Sticker, but for Favorite it isn't.
The same happened with aespa's Savage: the intro, the 3 choruses, the break dance, and the outro+ the bridge...almost the all choreography was there, but still they had some space here and there for the story: the fight against the Black Mamba.
It doesn't make sense to me, especially if the 1st and 2nd choruses steps are the same!!!+later a dance practice or camera work video is going be release....
In the other hand, for Red Velvet's Queendom, the main parts of the choreography were there, but you are still able to catch up the story. It was a good balance.
I can only give my opinion about the groups i follow, and i don't know if it's happening just with SM (they are known to have "phases" like the "Box MVs" during the 2nd gen), so that's why i'm asking.
Perhaps, i'm being too picky...at the end of the day, K-pop is supposed to be "flashy" and not "too deep", but i still feel bother by that simply fact.

I’d rather have a separate performance video than too much choreo being shown tbh
I can only understand putting the “killing point” from the choreography

I'm all for 2 MVs. One that is scene based and one that's choreography based
I personally don’t care much but I think it would be nicer if there’s a good balance between an interesting storyline and some choreography in between. Makes it more fun to watch

There seems to be MVs where everyone just went "forget the story, let's go dance".

Maybe I rather have the MV to show some key points than too much.
Scene based is probably lot of work and money while too much choreo MV can be tiring.
It can be a "gen" thing, with the 4th one being more into dancing and into performance than vocal or acting ?
As long as I like the song, I'll be okay for the MV (with some exceptions)

maybe it's about the kpop "gen" thing.
as we know, in the 2nd gen of kpop you see there's a lot mv that has a great storyline even some of them almost looks like a short movie & even some of them invites top tier actors as mv star. we rarely see that kind of mv again these days, instead we got some versions of mv/special video from a group who has just comeback. personally I'm okay with that but it would be great things if they're releasing a movie-like mv especially groups from big companies.

I don't mind it for nugu ggs because it's probably cost saving for them.
For top ggs, I expect drama mv like T-ara Day by Day

You can have a story and showcase the main dance like SHINee's Sherlock.

I didn't want to say it but yes, tiring is the word. If it isn't a performance video, watching too much dance can be boring.Maybe I rather have the MV to show some key points than too much.

If it's a 4th gen thing, I hope that whoever dares to break the mold becomes popular.

Craxy (nugu 4th gen gg) has a drama-style MV, and they are trying to create their own universe (like MCU). Personally I'm not a fan of the song tho, but check the MV out if you're interested.I miss 2nd gen videos so much!!!!

It varies a lot. There are several kinds of MVs and they all have a different approach. I like story MVs, but I also like performance MVs if the choreo is good enough. I think the story MVs are better for viral potential and to showcase concepts, but performance MVs can be enjoyable too even if they are mostly for people that are already fans imo. My biggest issue with K-pop in particular is that everyone seems to follow the trends for the most part so you see a lot of the same concept everywhere. It's either that or they copy some well known already existing piece of media. It doesn't happen as often anymore because of how popular worldwide K-pop is now and all the copyright issues that come with it. Not to mention a lot of the same people are used in production be it music producers or video producers.

This is so true!! Now, even the clothes are almost the same. With so many groups are there, the repetition is bound to happen. My biggest issue with K-pop in particular is that everyone seems to follow the trends for the most part so you see a lot of the same concept everywhere.
Yes, that too. You can already tell (because of the effects or camera movements) who is the director of the MV (while fans will scream is being plagiarized)Not to mention a lot of the same people are used in production be it music producers or video producers.
