I decided to release the JYP history as I dont know when the next SM piece will be up as it is taking a while as SM is an animal to research. DSP should also be up soon, I just have to edit a few things. I plan to release part 2 for JYP very quickly. Part 3 might come a little later as I will then move to putting out DSP Media part 1 and 2 and then during this time I will be working to finish part 3 SM which I will then release.

JYP Entertainment
The Early Life and Career of Park Jin-young: 1972~1997

Park Jin-young, a man that is as important to the Korean music industry as Michael Jackson was to the American music industry. Park Jin-young is an interesting character that showed a gritty determination to be a star even after many setbacks and hard times. He would then go on to build a company from the ground up and through his solo fame and management skills bring that company up to magnificent heights. A fantastic producer, Park Jin-young is also known for his eccentric dance moves and his great performance abilities. Few individuals have influenced not only K-pop but Korean music in general as Park Jin-young, founder of JYP Entertainment, has.

Park Jin-young was born in Seoul, South Korea on January 13th1972 and from day one he has always been an eccentric person. He would grow up getting into fist fights but also honing his artistic skills and seeing stars such as Michael Jackson in America. In high school Park Jin-young wasn’t a particularly devoted student and was known to be a bit slacking, however when it came time to take test for college he prepared by studying nearly the entire night for months before the actual tests. This helped him land into one of the most prestigious colleges in Korea, Yonsei University. It was during this time, right after getting out of high school in 1992, that Park Jin-young would debut in a group called Park Jin-young and the New Generation. This group was made up of three members and created by producer/singer Kim Chul-soo, a famous Korean singer of the 1970s’ and 80s. The group would release their debut album, named for the group, in 1993 with the title song “Floating Time”. It would be with this album that Park Jin-young would begin his songwriting and composing career with the songs, “You, You, You, You” and “Looking Back”. While the album had an original sound, the group failed to make it begin and would soon disband. Thu, Jin-young would continue to study geology but his real love would remain singing and performing and thus he decided that he would be a dancer first and a student second, focusing more on his entertainment career. It was during this time around 1993 or so that JYP would audition for several agencies and be rejected from them, one in particular being an up and coming company known as SM Studio. Park Jin-young was told that he did not have the looks to be an idol and thus he had a difficult time beginning his career. It was during these middle years that Park Jin-young would work as a back-up dancer for Kim Gun-Mo, having been discovered by the artist at a club.

Park Jin-young would not give up due to his failures however and would work with a producer/composer on his first solo album, this is good as it helped shape him as an artist. In this way JYP would make his solo debut on September 1st, 1994 with an album titled Blue City. He would make his debut with Cheil Communications, a marketing company under Samsung. The album would showcase what JYp became known for, his catchy songs and his fun dances that encouraged his audience to dance along., the title being the dance pop song “Don’t Leave me”. JYP’s amazing performances helped turn the song into one of the top hits that year with the song spending two weeks in a row at number 1. The album did very well as well selling roughly 470,000 physical copies. His second single, “Behind You” would not capture the public imagination as his first single but it showed a deeper side to JYP that future portrayed his performance skills. JYP would release his second album,Tantara, with the label Orange Popular in September of 1995. This album would begin JYP’s fame for his unique fashion sense with his famous see-through pants being fully displayed on his album’s cover. The single “Proposal” would rise to number 1 and have its own catchy dance that fans could dance along to. Another hit from the album would be “Elevator”, a song which mixed American R&B, Hip hop and rap sounds into a Korean feel. The song was slightly controversial as the lyrics and dance were sexually suggestive but it still gained wide notoriety. Another song from the album, “Forever Just the Two of Us” would also be used in the tv show Heroes several years later. Overall, this album would highlight JYP’s great writing and composing skills and do very well commercially selling 830,000 physical copies. As 1996 came closer JYP would be able to spend even more time on his idol career as he finally graduated from Yonsei University with a solo career. His success encouraged him as in the days after the failure of his boy group debut, JYP stressed that he was stressed and wondered if he should give up and become a salary man, lucky for him he decided to stick it out. In September of 1996, JYP would release his third album titled Summer Jingle Bell, which continued his amazing success. This would also be the album that JYP would begin a friendship with Bang Si-hyuk, future CEO of Big hit Entertainment, and have the producer write a couple songs for his new album. Bang Siyuk would go onto become a producer at Tae-Hong Planning Corporation when JYP founded the label the next year. With this album, songs like “She Was Pretty”, would truly show JYP’s originality as the song displayed a funk and disco sound that was uncommon in K-pop during this time. This would be JYP’s third straight album to find great commercial success selling roughly 720,000 physical copies.

This was JYP’s golden age, he truly brought an originality to K-pop that was little seen during this time and his massive success showed that it was something that the Korean public craved. It was during this year that JYP also began writing songs for other artists including Choi Yong-jun’s “I Love You,” and Insooni’s “Again” and “Mirae”. This songwriting and composing ability increased JYP’s fame even more and he began to be well respected within the Korean music industry. This fame allowed JYP to do a couple things, first he would find his own company in May of 1997 called Tae-Hong Planning Corporation and second, he would be called on by EBM (now SidusHQ) with helping prepare a project group the company was creating. The project group, the future g.o.d, would be created when Park Joon-hyung, a Seoul born American raised former graphic designer, decided to move to Korea in 1997 and create a pop group. His hope was to mix his knowledge of Korean music with his knowledge, having grown up in America, of western culture. He would start by recruiting his cousin Danny Ahn and would eventually, along with JYP, move on to recruit Danny’s friends Son Ho-young, Yoon Kye-sang, and Kim Sun-a. The project groups agency, EBM, was going through tough times due to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and thus had a difficult time had a hard time finding food and funding for their project group. Things looked bleak until EBM decided, thanks to Joon Park’s relentlessness, to introduce JYP to the members as both a mentor and a song writer for the group. The future members of g.o.d were not new to the industry when they were recruited by Park Joon. Danny Ahn was born in Seattle, Washington but would be raised in Korea. He became inspired by Seo Taiji and would begin his career as a rapper for the singer Uhm Jung-hwa. Before being recruited by Park Joon, Danny would almost debut as part of a mix-gendered group with future bandmate and close friend Son Ho-young, future S.E.S member Shoo and future NRG member Kim Hwan-sung. This group fell through however and Danny was soon recruited by Park Joon for his project group. Son Ho-young would have a difficult childhood as his parents would divorce and he would have difficulties with his father. When Ho-young met his future friend Danny Ahn, he was actually living on the streets. Son Ho-young developed an interest in singing and would almost debut in a mix gendered group with Danny Ahn, Shoo, and Kim Hwan-sung but this fell through. Son Ho-young would eventually be encouraged to audition for the project group that Park Joon and JYP were holding auditions for and which Danny Ahn was apart of. Next came Yoon Kye-sang, born in Seoul South Korea, he had dreams of becoming a rock star and thus responded to an advertisement that he saw for JYP’s and Park Joon’s group and auditioned. Next Kim Sun-a was born in Daegu, South Korea but spent a part of her childhood in Japan. She would join the entertainment industry in 1996 by accident as she would stand in for a friend at a modeling gig. During this time, she would appear in a few movies and music videos but she would also contemplate a singing career. It was with this attitude that she would audition and pass JYP’s and Park Joon’s auditions for the project group. She would train with them for a time, along with JYP, but decide in the end to pursue only an acting career. Kim Tae-woo would be the last member to join the group in July of 1998. Kim Tae-woo, born in Gumi, South Korea, would grow up wanting to be a singer and being a fan of groups such as H.O.T. With this in mind he would set in a demo tape to JYP, who was looking for a final member for the project group tentatively called GOT6. He would then buy a one-way ticket to Seoul after being called into audition and after passing would be put into the group and singed with JYP’s new company JYPE. Tensions were high during this time as members resented Tae-woo due to his short training time and for him having come in only a little before member Kim Sun-a left.

The Founding of Tae-Hong Planning and the Rise of JYPE: 1997~1999

During all of this, JYP was also continuing his career and managing a company. In late 1997, JYP would change the name of his company to JYPE. This year JYP would also write several hits for other artists like Uhm Jung-hwa’s “Invitation”, and Park Ji-yoon’s, “My Man” and “Precious love”. JYPE would also release their first artist, a female soloist named Jinju, in 1997 with her debut album Sunflower. The biggest song off the album, "I'm OK", which was a remake of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive".Jinju was a Seoul raised R&B singer that debuted in December of 1997 with her debut solo album Sunflower. "I'm OK" would do well in the charts and rise to the higher levels of national charts. Though her debut song would find moderate success, Jinju would gain particular notoriety due to her soulful voice. In January of 1998, JYP would release his fourth album titled Even After Ten Years. This album showed that JYP was a hit maker as his title song a “Honey” with its unforgettable opening became an instant hit. This song continued JYP’s use of funk and comedian Jung Sun-hee helped with the memorable intro. This album would again prove to be a commercial success for JYP selling 710,000 physical copies. In December of 1998, JYP would release his fifth album titled Kiss Me. This album would further show JYP’s commitment to putting out funk songs and it would hit light the talents of producer Bang Siyuk as he continued to increase his hit making skills. JYP would also show his rock ballad chops by working with Im Jae-bum on the song “Reunion”. This album would also do well commercially though not as well as previous albums selling roughly 266,329 physical copies. After the release of this album JYP would step more into his producer role as he worked hard towards the debut of g.o.d along with Bang Siyuk. As mentioned before g.o.d was originally called GOT6 but when Kim Sun-a left this name was changed before their debut to g.o.d which meant, Groose Over Dose, as it became a five-member group.

As 1999 dawned the project group was finally ready for debut after two years of recruiting and training. JYP and Bang Siyuk would be in charge of writing and composing songs for the group while Hong Seung-sung, then President of JYPE, would be in charge of managing the group’s activities. It must be remembered that though JYP and JYPE composers and executives effectively created and ran the group, g.o.d was under EBM and not JYPE. The group would debut on January 13, 1999 with a performance of “To Mother” from their debut album, title Chapter 1 released 13 days later, on the SBS late show One Night of TV Entertainment. Bang Siyuk would produce a few songs on the album while most of the lyrics came from JYP himself. The song “To Mother” would be partly written and composed by several producers including an arrangement by JYP. The group would retroactively give credit to 2PAC as the song was basically a remake of “Life Goes On”. While “To Mother” became the biggest hit of the album “Observation” would gain notice for its sci-fi theme and dance. The group would get some notice for their boy next door vibe and not having the typical visually appealing members and also for their vocal talent. This album however did not give them fantastic fame nor amazing commercial success and they only sold roughly 160,000 physical copies. In November of 1999 the group would release their second album Chapter 2 which received much better success. This would be the album would propel the group to stardom and the title song “Love and Remember” written and composed by JYP would become a fantastic hit. The song would win the group their first number one on music shows and the album would sell 578,567 physical copies although it initially placed at number 10 on the RIAK charts.

JYPE would also focus on its only artists at the time, Jinju, and release her second solo album titled Jinju’s Soul Musicin December of 1999. This time Jinju would receive a bit more recognition and her album would find an audience commercially selling 45,879 physical copies. Again, Jinju would receive compliments due to her amazing voice, something that was surprising due to her youth.

Thus, going into the new millennium JYP had risen from his unlucky early days to be an amazing respected solo singer, producer and song writer. He was one of the biggest soloists in the countries and one of the most prolific producers. He had also helped created a group that had become a hit and only had the potential to rise going into the next year. JYP also founded his own company, now called JYPE, though this company had really not taken much of the spot light yet as JYP was more focused on his career and recruiting and producing for g.o.d. This would change in 2000 as JYP would discover a struggling dancer named Jung Ji-hoon and train him to become Korea’s first global star.
