NHK has learned that talent agency Johnny & Associates is suspected of applying pressure on commercial broadcasters not to feature three former members of popular idol group SMAP on TV programs.

The Fair Trade Commission has issued a warning to the talent agency on the grounds the act may lead to an anti-monopoly law violation.

SMAP disbanded in 2016. Three of the five original all-male members broke away from Johnny & Associates in September 2017. They are Goro Inagaki, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, and Shingo Katori. The three joined another agency set up by a former manager of SMAP and since then have continued their activities in show business.

The three had enjoyed a high popularity with their appearances on TV dramas and variety programs. But after they left Johnny & Associates, their regular programs of commercial broadcasters were canceled one after another, and they currently have no TV program appearances on the broadcasters.
