StanWill the dark clouds cast on Kang Daniel's broadcasting activities be lifted ?
Kang Daniel, who made his debut as the center of the group Wanna One by winning the final No. 1 spot on Mnet's "Produce 101 Season 2" in 2017, has since met with a huge wave of popularity shaking the Korean entertainment industry with the Kang Daniel's Syndrome.
As much as his popularity rised, the number of TV love calls at that time also increased. During his career as a Wanna One member, Kang Daniel appeared on dozens of variety programs such as Running Man, Happy Together, SNL Korea, Please Take Care of My Refrigerator, The Return of Superman... Including fixed cast variety shows such as It's Dangerous Beyond The Blanket, Master Key or My Unexpected Housemate.
TV love calls came to an abrupt halt in March when the singer filed a lawsuit against his former company LM Entertainment for illegally selling his contract rights to a third party.
After Kang Daniel received a full acceptance from the Court to suspend his contract with LM in May, allowing him the right to promote without interference from the agency, the singer established KONNECT Entertainment, a one-man agency and began preparing for his solo debut.
Even after the establishment of a one-man agency, disputes over exclusive contracts with LM continued. In July, the court confirmed their decision to suspend the exclusive contract binding the artist to the agency, but LM's objected to the decision once again and filled an appel to higher Court.
Despite the unfavorable conditions of the exclusive contract dispute, Kang Daniel released his solo debut album "Color on Me" on July 25. It was the first time in seven months since Wanna One ended its career. It was a much later-than-expected period, given that the members who previously worked together as Wanna One are already doing well in the entertainment industry as a whole.
Despite his successful debut and long-awaited debut and comeback in the entertainment industry Kang Daniel continued to be absent from TV. In response to fans' growing concern about his lack of appearances, entertainment journalists investigated into what was going on and revealed that even after Konnect met with program officials face-to-face, Kang Daniel would not receive casting calls despite his will to appear on shows.
Broadcasting officials at the time explained that they were hesitant to cast someone who is in a legal conflict, echoing the threat conveyed by the Korea Management Federation that expelled Kang Daniel's manager from the association, warning against "entering into contracts with celebrities who are currently in a legal dispute with agencies."
Thus, Kang Daniel, who was facing a ban from TV stations, resorted to using alternate ways to provide content to fans such as through his YouTube travelogue Colorful Daniel, through exclusive contents on popular Korean youtube channels and through interviews on various overseas TV programs while embarking on a fan meeting schedule tour in Asia.
Although he has been communicating with fans with various second-best options, it was still unclear when Kang Daniel's restrictions on his activities would be lifted. But before LM's 2nd appeal of an injunction, Kang Daniel's exclusive contract dispute was settled on September 27, signaling a turnaround in his broadcast activities.
At the time, the Korea Entertainment Management Association announced that Kang Daniel and LM agreed to terminate the contract through mediation ending the dispute. In addition, the association made it official that "LM has agreed to recognize Kang Daniel's new agency and new activities." Naturally, the lawsuit over the two sides' request for an injunction to suspend the validity of the exclusive contract was dropped.
The news of the end of the dispute ending smoothly is a green light for broadcasting officials to send again love calls to Kang Daniel. Although some of them are still hesitant, others are more open to the idea, stating : after the news of the end of the dispute that had ended smoothly, there is no reason to refuse to cast him.
It has been reported that the singer immediately received offers to appear on TV programs. However, he cannot immediately accept these love calls due to his previously-scheduled fanmeetings which will continue into November. But he assured we will be able to meet him in various forms such as music, broadcasting, and entertainment in the near future.
With that hint of hope fans are greatly looking forward to Kang Daniel once again appearing on TV.
