As already seen at the Euro, most players were exhausted or not in condition
Before this season it wasn't the numbers of games, as top clubs played as much as 20-25 years ago. But the difference now is that intensity increased so much so players are more tired, more vulnerable to injuries despite games being less "violent" on the field, so 3 days isn't enough to recover.
With this season new format in all 3 European Cups, you add more games...it's going to be worst. No wonder Chelsea had 40 players.

Actually, the volume of games still matter. It is one of the factor that contribute to how fast you recover. In soccer, we use three energy systems.
The three energy systems are:
- Anaerobic Alactic (ATP-CP) Energy System (High Intensity β Short Duration/Bursts)
- Anaerobic Lactic (Glycolytic) Energy System (High to Medium Intensity β Up tempo)
- Aerobic Energy System (Low Intensity β Long Duration β Endurance)
All three systems are used at various stages of the match by different players. And it is a factor in recovery.
Also when it come to strength and conditioning for all sports, it isn't just you lift this set amount of load x volume..etc
Training are planned based on periodization. And it is further divided into cycles.
Periodization consists of three types of cycles:
- A macrocycle refers to your season as a whole.
- A mesocycle refers to a particular training block within that season (e.g., the endurance phase).
- A microcycle refers to the smallest unit within a mesocycle (e.g., usually a week of training).
The problem is that players do not take their training as seriously. Take International breaks for example, if let say some players aren't selected for their national team, they will go on vacation, but that is a problem. Because it is actually the best time for overload conditioning to be carried out.
And because those players go on break, they end up not being match-fit.
And whether you like it C.Ronaldo or not, the reason why he is able to stay fit at the highest level for so long is because he understand all these.

@BianTwo
Anyway I was a bit long winded in the above post. But I will like to say that there are many factors contributing to performances. And I isn't a fan of more workload. Because in a regular season, we already have 38 matches in EPL. And that is not counting cup tournaments, like the FA Cup, Carabaro Cup. And top teams are also playing in other europe tournament, add on international matches, and that is already an intense amount.
I have to do a 8-week training periodisation plan based on a sport, and I decided to do it for soccer player and just planning 8 weeks alone is a killer. It make me really humbled because despite the vast knowledge I have, I still have so much more to learn, and so much more to understand.

Ronaldo might be the "extreme" case, no wonder he's staying fit and I'm sure he'll try to stay fit even in his 70's.
I would say : a sickly mindset to stay fit, but that's how he lasted that long.
I remember Javier Zanetti's story asking his wife, during their mariage, if she wanted to run with him before the guests arrived. And he retired at 41.

Well psychology do play a part. And Ronaldo's obsession with being in his peak condition help him a lot.
Sadly as we already can see, once players do not take their strength and conditioning, their performances will fall off rapidly. One prime example will be Casemiro. We can talk about Ten Hag's tactics and all that, but we can see that Casemiro is already not in his peak condition due to his strength and conditioning falling off.
Whether is it due to the medical team + training staffs, or just Casemiro's mental alone, only he will know

So Arsenal had Odegaard, Rice, Merino and Calafiori injured. And they are playing against Tottenham sunday
So they'll have to put Partey, Zinchenko and...Havertz ? Unless they are starting Jorginho
