Hello, Hallyu+ users! Valentine's Day is slowly approaching, so what better way to spend it than listening to beautiful love songs you've never heard before! Theme: Being Scared To Tell Someone You Love Them
After a slew of hit singles in 2018 like "Kathang Isip (Imagination)", "Maybe the Night", and "Ride Home", indie folk band Ben&Ben decided to release their debut album "Limasawa Street" on May 2019 with the lead single "Pagtingin (How You Look At Me)". It's about someone who is unable to tell another their feelings because they're afraid that things will get awkward between them. This is so common in the country that there is a term for it called "torpe". We're scared to tell someone how we feel because they might not like us back and as a result we wouldn't even be friends anymore. What's interesting about the lyrics is that it's not a narration (telling the listeners a story) nor an address (addressing the song to someone). Instead, it's written as an inner monologue, which actually makes sense because we have so many thoughts running through our heads on whether we should tell someone we like them or not. The lyrics to this song are so colorful and deep that it resonates with a lot of people and became one of the band's most successful hits.

#2: MATTHAIOS - CATRIONA
Theme: Admiration And Adoration
If the previous song's lyrics were full of deep and sophisticated words, Matthaios's "Catriona" is full of slang and street words that many laymen can relate to and find funny. The song is based on the Filipino woman who was crowned as Miss Universe in 2018, Catriona Gray. Matthaios released the song on December 1, 2019, and it was so successful that even today, it still tops the Spotify charts in the Philippines. On December 10, Matthaios asked his friends and followers to send him clips of them singing of "Catriona", and he pieced them together to create a music video. Although the song is titled as such, it's actually not all about her. The person we are attracted to, no matter who it is, will be the most beautiful person in our eyes. #3: SARAH GERONIMO - TALA (STAR)
Theme: Crossroads of A Relationship
As mentioned in the previous article, Sarah Geronimo is one of the most prominent artists in the Philippines, and is commonly called "Pop Star Royalty". She is known for her vocal range since her songs usually had belting and a lot of high notes like in "Maybe This Time by Michael Martin Mumphrey", "Paano Ba Ang Magmahal (lit. How Is It To Love)", "Kaibigan Mo (lit. Your Friend)", "Forever's Not Enough", and "Kilometro (lit. Kilometer)". This is why "Tala (lit. Star)" came as a surprise because it did not highlight her singing ability, but rather her dancing ability. The song recently became a dance craze in the Philippines, and K-Pop groups who came to the country covered this dance such as Momoland and Winner's Seunghoon. The song is not only catchy but meaningful as well, as it talks about the crossroads of love. She says that even if they break up, she will still remember him fondly. But if they decide to continue, then they will reach for the stars. I find the message very beautiful because relationships have their moments where they become rocky, but she doesn't intend to cling to him or beg him to stay. She gives him the choice to continue the relationship or not. And if they do continue, then they promise each other to try to make everything much better.

#4: KZ TANDINGAN - MAHAL KO O MAHAL AKO (THE ONE I LOVE OR THE ONE WHO LOVES ME)
Theme: Choosing Between The One You Love Or The One Who Loves You
KZ Tandingan first rose to prominence when she won on the first season of the X-Factor Philippines in 2012. She then gained international fame when she covered Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" in the Chinese singing competition Singer 2018. Over the years, she has released several successful hits and covers such as "Two Less Lonely People in the World by Air Supply", "Till My Heartaches End by Ella May Saison", "Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack", and "Royals by Lorde". "Mahal Ko O Mahal Ako (lit. The One I Love Or The One Who Loves Me)" is an original song that was released in 2014. It is about choosing between the one you love but doesn't like you back or the one who loves you but you don't love them back. It becomes an eternal dilemma in the song when she thinks that maybe if she waits, then perhaps the one she loves will learn to love her back. But likewise, she may also learn to love the person who is waiting for her. She also questions whether she should listen to her heart or to her mind, which I think is a common problem for anyone who is in love. Itchyworms, who released the hits "Di Na Muli (lit. Never Again)", "Beer", and "Ayokong Tumanda (lit. I Don't Want To Grow Old)", decided to give this kind of love a comical twist with "Akin Ka Nalang (lit. Be Mine Instead)". In the song, they try to convince their crush that her boyfriend is just a lying smooth-talker and that she should be [theirs] instead. The lyrics are funny because they sound petty, for example they say the other guy is ugly, which is an uncommon style that the band is famous for. The song is very upbeat and reminiscent of 60s rock songs like The Beatles. Nevertheless, it doesn't sound old at all and you can still rock to it while in your car. The song has also been used by KFC and Close-Up in their television advertisements.

The song is addressed to a second person and tries to convince them to try to fall in love. Many of us have probably been in a position like this where we have feelings for someone, but they're not yet ready. I like how the lyrics of this song are simple and easy to understand, but from time to time, they'll sprinkle some fancy words which give the song a romantic feeling. And although this song is just a cover, they were able to capture the original's pleading and begging vibe, which for me is the essence of the song.

To give a little bit of a breather for readers and listeners, I decided to include a song sung in English. Like the first song on this list, "Don't Know What To Do" is also about the "torpe" nature of Filipinos. However, if the first song was all about the anxiety of ruining what they already have, this song is more about the pure and innocent unrequited feelings of someone. It was originally composed by Odette Quesada and released by Ric Segreto in 1982 and was covered by many artists over the years. One of the most prominent is Mark Carpio's cover in 2017, which already gained more than 30 million views on YouTube at the time of this article. Unlike the original song, which is heavily influenced by 80s music styles and techniques you'll often see from singers like Christopher Cross, Mark Carpio uses a modern style in singing. When talking about rappers and hip-hop artists in the Philippines, Gloc9 is one of the most popular and most successful. He has released several hits like "Sirena (lit. #10:ERASERHEADS - HUWAG KANG MATAKOT (DON'T BE AFRAID)
Theme: Always Being There For Someone
If you saw my previous article on OPM, you'll know a playlist is impossible without the Eraserheads. The band has released many love song hits like "With A Smile", "Torpedo", "Ligaya (lit. Happiness)", "Pare Ko (lit. My Friend)", "Toyang", "Kailan (lit. When)", "Harana (lit. Serenade)", and many more. So, I decided to feature a less popular love song from them. But unlike my previous Eraserheads recommendation, someone has covered this song so it can be considered a bit more popular. The song is played with drums, a bass guitar, an electric guitar as lead, and an acoustic guitar for the rhythm. This is a song of comfort for someone whenever they're afraid. It reminds them that someone is by their side and that they're not alone in whatever they're going through. Sometimes, knowing that someone is there who cares for you can actually go a long way. What's also very interesting about this song is the contrast in rhythm between the accompaniment and the singing. The song is sung in a slow manner but the accompaniment is very upbeat, which gives it a very pleasing combination of sound and makes it very catchy.

#11: MICHAEL PANGILINAN & MARION AUNOR - CLOSER YOU & I
Theme: Slowly Falling In Love
"Closer You & I" was originally released by Gino Padilla in 1990 and was covered as a duet by Michael Pangilinan ("Bakit Ba Ikaw (lit. Why Is It You)", "Hanggang Kailan (lit. Until Forever)", "It Might Be You") and Marion Aunor ("Akala (lit. Assumption)", "I Love You Always Forever"). It was recorded as the soundtrack of the 2017 film "Loving in Tandem". Although the original song is almost thirty years old, the two were still able to make it sound fresh, which shows that it was a successful cover. Both are also very good singers, which made for a beautiful blending in a duo. While listening to their voices, you can imagine two people meeting for the first time and slowly falling in love. They were able to capture that innocent feeling of the first stages of love.

#12: JED MADELA - MAYBE
Theme: Unrequitedly Loving Someone
Although Jed Madela's original releases didn't find much success, he is still considered as one of the best singers of the country due to his wide range and covers of many songs such as "The Past by Ray Parker Jr.", "Changes In My Life by Mark Sherman", and "Didn't We Almost Have It All by Whitney Houston". This song was also covered by Madela in 2017 from Neocolour's 1990 song of the same name. Madela shows off his vocal range in this song with lots of belting, voice curls, and falsettos. Unlike the other song in this playlist about unrequitedly loving someone in a relationship, this takes on a more melancholic and emotional take through a ballad. The singer thinks to himself that it's wrong to like someone who can't like him back but his love is too strong to stop. It clearly shows the difficulty and sadness of being in love. Sometimes, love can also bring pain and suffering. Nevertheless, that same love is also what keeps him strong and makes him bear all the pain and suffering for the slim chance that she'll love him back. Overall, it's a beautiful ballad that was brought alive by Jed Madela's fantastic vocals.
