Before ya'll read this, I'm not trying to bash or hate on SM/Red velvet, but just stating my opinion:

For me, Red Velvet's music has gone downhill. Obviously most people agree with that on the fact that Zimzalabim wasn't the best, but I feel like after Bad Boy, their comebacks Power Up, RBB, and Zimzalabim weren't that good. I love RBB and Power Up, but I feel like compared to their songs before, Peek A Boo and Red Flavor they weren't as good. Maybe it's just recently songs haven't been as good and maybe it will get better but it has really been going down for me at least. I love Red Velvet, and I feel like something like f(x) maybe happen where after they debut a new group, SM will care about their groups before less : / maybe you will say that they won't cause of how popular Red Velvet is, but honestly back then f(x) was huge too, but after Red Velvet debut, f(x) was just left behind by SM. And there has been a rumor that SM will debut another gg this year so I really hope it doesn't come true that what I think might happen will happen, where SM will just leave red velvet behind and focus on their new group more. Who knows maybe I might be looking into it too much maybe they just haven't had the best songs and it will go up 🤷

I wanna know what you guys think / do you agree or not and why

if you read this wooo most people don't read past the 2nd line XD

I believe RV will honestly end going down the same path all S.M. groups take. They’ll eventually start getting less promoted altogether. But I honestly think f(x) might’ve had a little different of a situation with members leaving/not promoting with the group.

yeah I feel like SM is gonna care less about them more and more until they won't have a comeback in years like fx

We all know that when SM debuts their new girl group they will leave Red Velvet aside to focus solely on them as they did with f(x). Obviously Red Velvet is never going to disband (cofSESnSNSDnfxcof) because they would lose money for that, but well, the best for my GodJoy in the future.

The only thing is that SM doesn't have a GG lined up for debut any time soon, and RV is the only active GG on the SM roster at present. Even if SMNGGG debuts next year, there's no guarantee it will do well, or do well immediately. Despite their recent releases, RV is still a Top5 GG in terms of sales, and has better sales than FX. IZONE has an expiry date, and BP is being held back by YG legal issues - it makes sense for SM to keep RV going rather than withdrawing or reducing their activities.

I don't think there is much point on discussing music quality. It is extremely subjective. I personally don't feel like there has been a drop in quality. I think it has been very on par to the concept SM has decided for the group since the start.

Digitally they haven't ranked as high as before but the state of the market is very different. We'll have to wait and see next year how well they did overall. Physically they are doing well.

About F(x), I didn't really follow them or k-pop at all at the time, but looking at the releases it doesn't look like SM was pushing them super hard before RV debuted. I think correlating what SM did to them to RV debuting is just ignoring a lot of other possibilities. Personally I think internal issues and the concept are more at fault from an outsiders perspective and in hindsight. Granted I can be 100% wrong here not being familiar with their situation at all.

I also feel like the issue is more SM favoritism towards boy groups rather than prioritizing a girl group over another. It has been a long rumor that SM doesn't care as much about gg's after Girls' Generation and imo it has been corroborated by their actions. Even at the tail end of Girl's Generation it felt like they were being neglected both as a group and as individuals. Which is a mistake imo. Even if bg's clearly make more money sabotaging your own artists with poor support is just shooting yourself on the foot. Also the market does not bear a company releasing infinity bg's and diversifying in the gg market is smarter imo than juggling 3+ active bg's.

Also looking at anything coming out about SMNGG it seems that it is super far away. Most of it is fans starving for news digging up old stuff. Some are very minimal deals that barely let you know who the girls are. Along with a lot of rumors from phantom sources about maybe concept brainstorming. A lot of the articles also sound more like fans trying to media hype because they are desperate rather than SM starting to put out a debut project. SM is very unique, to a fault, when it comes to their artists.

I won't rule out them just out of the blue debuting a NGG because they have done it, but I think it won't be this year considering the competition and the current gg market.

To me the most important question is what the concept of the NGG is and who is going to be in it. I think K-pop has changed a lot from when Girls' Generation was top dog. Fans now want and expect more direct connection with their idols and want more genuine personalities. SM likes to build up concepts for individuals rather than let them be themselves and I don't think it works nowadays. I also think that they need to do a more relatable concept as far as music and overall image goes. I genuinely feel like groups like F(x), Miss A and even Red Velvet, even though successful, could have been even bigger if it weren't for their more experimental/edgy concepts. I know that is why their fans love them, but I'm speaking here purely on a business view of generating the most revenue possible.

No matter what their next gg is going to do fine, but SM doesn't want fine they want to blow up. So do Koreans. RV is doing great top 3 gg of this gen arguably top 2. Yet non-fans usually focus on the negatives. I wish Korea wasn't such a bandwagon culture.

In the end I don't think it is fair to say SM neglected F(x) because of RV, nor that it will neglect RV when the NGG debuts. I think what is fair is saying SM neglects gg's in general.

I've found that, as groups get more popular, the quality of their music drops. Companies just don't seem to put the same effort into crafting the songs like they did when their groups were rising. Once the group has a loyal fanbase, they put in minimal effort to make as much money as possible. Then they start developing the next group to replace them and save the better songs for when they'll debut.
