Warning: long read ahead!

From: Anonymous
To: If you know, you know.

All the names, characters, businesses, places, events, and incidents in this book are the product of the author's imagination. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.

“Hallyuville is a small village where everyone knows everyone.”

You rolled your eyes and shook your head as you overheard the village chief proudly declare to a group of visitors. He'd repeated that phrase for as long as you could remember. Those same words had also once filled your heart with pride and joy but now only made you feel heavy and trapped. You yearned for the other side of the ocean where there would be fresh air–where every corner you turned would no longer be just another familiar place and familiar face.

So you tossed the duffle bag over your shoulder, sighed deeply, and took one last glance at the “Welcome” entrance sign hung above the village gate before heading further and further away until everything was no longer visible. Here to a new beginning!

And a new beginning it was.

It felt good to no longer be suffocated by familiarity. You got to wander to places you'd never been to before and meet people who would forget you the next day.

You had always disliked attachment. So needless to say, you enjoyed this newfound life where there was no feeling to be had. No one you had to entangle yourself with. No pesky 5 year olds you would need to babysit and scold every day at the daycare center you used to work at (you heard it had now been torn down and renovated into some crackhouse).

Such a good decision.

Of course, you assured yourself even years later. Maybe once in a while you would kind of reminisce about that old clubhouse where you and several friends back home would gather every week to play a few games together. The competitive ones would always turn into lose it and flip tables whenever they would lose a game. You remembered how a group of you would take turns every holiday to buy decors for the clubhouse and plan out various activities. It was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.

Admittedly, you had never forgotten any of it–the friends you’d made there and the memories you’d shared together. But such was the price for growth. To grow is to change, you told yourself. Plus, 5 years was a long time. You couldn’t be sure if anything would still remain the way it was. Everyone must’ve also moved on by now.

Your train of thought suddenly got interrupted by the sound of metal clanking. You saw that the mailman had dropped an envelope into your mail slot, so you walked over to pick it up.

The sender’s name was what caught your eye. She was one of your closest friends back in the day. You immediately opened it. It was a greeting card.

“Happy Early New Year! Hope 2025 will be a great year for you <3”

The message was simple, but it was enough to make you feel hopeful…that maybe not everything had changed. Maybe some things could still be the same. And just maybe you could still return.

With a newfound courage, you pulled out your phone and scrolled through your contact list until you found her number.

After a few hours of catching up, you learned that the village was still rampaging with addiction. The drug dealer was one time found drunk and sleeping on the street. There were some newcomers, but most of the folks you knew were still there. The grumpy cat lady who hated everyone and used to chase the kids down the street had now taken over the village chief’s duties. Some of the kids you’d babysat surprisingly didn’t become crackheads but had gone on to do well in school and in life. One was even about to get his master’s degree. A close friend of yours just got a new job that she actually liked. You also heard about the former clubhouse’s manager who was now a mother of two. The couple in your group was still together to this day. And many more stories were exchanged before you bid each other goodnight.

That night, as you were lying on your bed, you recalled the offer that was extended. ‘You know, we have a holiday event coming up soon. If you’re not doing anything, you’re welcome to join us!’

After a moment, you sprung up from your bed and grabbed your laptop. The earliest train booked. You took a deep breath before gathering up some of your belongings and stuffing them inside your duffle bag.

You headed out the door and as you were about to ride the elevator down to the first floor of your apartment building, you spotted the old security guard taking his nightly patrol. Or rather, he spotted you.

“Hey, miss!” he greeted you before surveying your rushed condition. “Going out so late?”

“Yes, I’m going back home for the holiday.”

“Oh? Where to?”

“Hallyuville.”

He frowned slightly and you knew he must have never heard of it.

You tossed the duffle bag over your shoulder and smiled at the old man's confusion.

“It is a small village where everyone knows everyone.”
