I went to tokyo for 6 days and unfortunately only spent one day in kyoto. i'd love to go back to both. Given i spent very little time in kyoto i'd love to go back and check out more temples.

Tokyo has everything. There are good alternatives to Kyoto around Tokyo , like Kamakura, an old city which was not really bombed during WW2 (same reason as Kyoto) and is only a short train ride from Shinjuku station. Tokyo.

i really wish i could get the chance to see either one of them in my lifetime
but just based on these pics, kyoto maybe since it looks less busy and a bit quieter?

I choose both, Although going to Tokyo is my dream since i was a kid, I would'nt mind if I go to Kyoto.
I want to go to Tokyo by 2022 I hope I can, but if I had to choose, Kyoto since it's less busier, Tokyo reminds me of Times Square I hate when there are thousands of people in my way when walking. I want to absorb the environment and surroundings and take pictures without all the over stimulation.

It is quite expensive to move around in Japan. Few Japanese not born in Tokyo area get to see its capital.
The parents of Sana and Momo (Twice) saw Tokyo for the first time in their lives when JYP paid for their trip to see Twice's first event at there.

If it's your first time in Japan maybe you can start with Tokyo, then Kyoto for another travel. Unless you stay for 1-2 months why not do both if you can.
