I saw this floating around twitter and thought it was interesting.
We have some very legendary all-rounders in Kpop from the 2nd and 3rd gen.
All-rounders are defined as idols who are talented at everything, specifically singing, dancing, and rapping.
In the previous gens some all-rounders that are well known are SNSD Taeyeon, BTS Jungkook, Blackpink Jennie, NCT Ten and Taeyong (I think Jaehyun too?), Twice Nayeon and Chaeyeong, etc.
Now that we are into 4th and 5th gen, who do you think are the all-rounders of the current generations?
I feel like ever since 4th gen started taking away designated roles and making everyone have to know everything, there has been a strong push for all-rounders.
Off the top of my head, I think the first person I’ve ever heard be called an all-rounder is Yeji from Itzy.
Karina is a very popular all-rounder (I feel like Winter is considered one as well?)
And recently IVE’s Yujin was getting the most praise on twitter for being all-rounded and having many skills. Yeji, Karina, and Yujin seem to be the power trio right now.
A few other GG names I see thrown around is Haewon from Nmixx, Natty from KIOF, and Sieun of StayC.
I feel like I can’t comment much for boy groups? Though I know TXT is heavily pushed as all-rounders. I think Yeonjun would probably be considered their specific”all-rounder” though.
For Ateez, maybe Seonghwa?

Yujin, in my opinion, is a great example because it isn’t just that she can do everything she is also very good at it. German Shepherd style.
I feel like within a few months of IVE’s debut she stepped forward as a strong idol.

I don't even know what the gens are now.
But I have a feeling "all rounder" will be thrown around way too generously.

you would be correct. It is actually, imo, damaging the quality of some groups. For some groups, there isn't really that balance where one member is REALLY good at something (variety, singing, dancing etc.), because companies seem focused on making them all about as good at each other at everything.I don't even know what the gens are now.

also not just on stage but off stage, she reminds me of 2nd/3rd gen cos she has that likeable personality and she's perf for varieties too, which people forget used to factor into all-rounders beforeYujin, in my opinion, is a great example because it isn’t just that she can do everything she is also very good at it. i miss this honestly, feels robotic and the fact that a a lot of the all-rounders these days are mid anyway. where's the idols that excel in one category?? does no one appreciate talent anymore??you would be correct. An interesting thought. Companies pursuing "Jack of all trades, master of none." Could definitely water down the range of talent in groups.because companies seem focused on making them all about as good at each other at everything.
I feel the true "all rounders" are rare, and occur naturally. Obviously I'm extremely biased, even if she isn't my individual bias lol. But I'd throw Dreamcatcher's Sua in as a perfect example... main dancer of a group that has often difficult and impressive choreography, she's well known in the fandom for being by far the most outgoing for variety, she's rapped well on multiple tracks, and in recent years has grown to be easily the third best vocalist on team too.
Unfortunately, I know fuck all about the new gen groups, like I said, don't even know who is considered what kek.
I do the abilities of a performer are still a big factor for me. But it seems most people these days just want a celebrity, whether they are any good on stage is an after thought. And the bigger companies in particular know this.does no one appreciate talent anymore??

I absolutely agree! I feel like the original idea is that this member is particularly good at any position, but I think since it has become a hot button term, everyone wants to throw their bias into the ring. I feel like people kind of want it to be a standard and some companies have caved to it. I just don't think that it is a good framework for most groups. I want a Kim Heechul, I want a Yuju, I want a Kai.An interesting thought. Companies pursuing "Jack of all trades, master of none." Could definitely water down the range of talent in groups.

I don't think any member of Mamamoo is particularly good at dancing compared to other groups (Wheein and Moonbyul are above average, though) - but I do think they are a perfect group.
From what I know of her, Sua is definitely one! Oh and the true blue - Seulgi!
For Yujin, I feel like she is one of the few idols I see on stage who actually seems to belong there? Like Chu said, she reminds me of Tiffany from SNSD but fresh.
Pretty good singer, great dancer, and is one of the few current idols with a steady position on a variety show. This gen, imo, isn't as expressive? I don't feel like I've seen many idols with a stand-out personality, which is why I haven't been gravitating to individual idols.

agreed with Seonghwa! and there was Mia from Everglow too…to the point where she was getting like 1/3s of a song + a dancebreak but she deserved it tbh!
for 5th gen, off the top of my head I think MEOVV’s Narin is showing promise. She can carry a note, rap and is very charismatic on stage but there’s basically no content for them sooo
for bgs possibly NCT Wish’s Sion or Yushi? With newer bgs there’s really no stand out vocalists so the all-rounder thing doesn’t hold up for them.

and iirc Illit Minju was presented as an all rounder in R u next? just she hasn't had many opportunities to show it in the group

Mamamoo are an interesting one because, and forgive me if this makes no sense, i think of them as less "idoly"? They easily have some of the strongest live shows in the industry, period.I don't think any member of Mamamoo is particularly good at dancing compared to other groups (Wheein and Moonbyul are above average, though) - but I do think they are a perfect group.
I think variety is just on its way out. Probably because it doesn't make much money. And like I said, most people, particularly younger fans, just want a IT girl/boy to look at on twitter. This gen, imo, isn't as expressive? I don't feel like I've seen many idols with a stand-out personality, which is why I haven't been gravitating to individual idols.
So if idols don't go out of their way to do lives and other off stage content, you never see a personality.

Very true! As someone who got to see one I'm going to Hwasa too btwMamamoo are an interesting one because, and forgive me if this makes no sense, i think of them as less "idoly"? They easily have some of the strongest live shows in the industry, period.
I fear I have to agree. I miss the good old variety shows. I also just feel like younger fans can't really handle it? Not saying they are too sensitive, but they ONLY want to see their idol, not the hosts and... the hosts are the ones who make it funny?I think variety is just on its way out. I don't think some idol fans understand just how much they like their idols?God forbid it's a show with more than one group.
Time to break some hearts...
Most groups are NOT funny. Fans just like the groups enough to find their tidbits cute enough to laugh. It makes some shows horrible to get through, so the hosts have to do the heavy lifting.

Careful, I can almost hear the X users coming for you.
I agree, but when they lynch me, I'm telling them you did it.
