Okay I was watching a few throwback vids and stumbled upon the 2014 Super Rookies performance with Red Velvet, Winner and GOT7.
What do you think did they never dominate this gen? Obviously they had a head start with an early debut and the easy connections from the Big 3, but somehow never reached the success of their peers who debuted a little later?
ps. this ain't a shade post im genuinely interested in learning the science behind this

GOT7 got good international fandoms because their music is gearing towards international fans more than Koreans
Lovelyz, they have distinctive music style but their music is not something that can appeal the mass
WINNER have good public recognition and pretty OK fandom but YG
Red Velvet has good digital and good fandom but their releases after Red Flavor prevented them from reaching higher peak i think. They're still No.3 though opcorn: But they really can't compete with TWICE or BP now opcorn: (I'm being honest)

But there haven't been any boy groups that debuted after GOT7 and Winner that are more successful than them. You could say that iKON, Seventeen and NCT are on about the same level though.

I mean yeah ? Lovelyz doesn't fit the argument here cause they were at an obvious disadvantage from the start. The other three however had a head start from everyone ?

Seventeen are without a doubt the 3rd biggest boy group after BTS & EXO. They have a big fandom and pretty good digitals.

can't say.
Red Velvet's concept just ain't everyone's cup of tea from the get-go.
I mean they already took risks concept wise by their 2nd release (Be Natural, or even Happiness) and never looked back haha. They got a bit of criticism for "rehashing" an old group's song with their twist on it (better than original if you ask me)
They never played it safe from the beginning and stepped outside of everyone's comfort zone real quick lol.
They were bound to NOT BE AS POPULAR AS THEIR OTHER TWO PEERS, BUT STILL ESTABLISH AND FIND SUCCESS IN THEIR OWN WAY.
I guess Red Velvet's own niche just isn't as big as say "Pop" or "Hip-Hop" markets.

Seventeen still have the upper hand.
Their last Korean album sold almost 500k on Gaon and their 1st Japanese single has over 250k sales. That's what more than any of the other groups you mentioned. Their sales jump up with every comeback while GOT7 have remained stagnant for quite a while(this is not a dig at them since I actually like them but facts are facts).
