#LayZhang became world famous as the Main Dancer, Vocalist and Rapper of the hugely Popular, top-selling, history-making Legendary Group #EXO! He is not only a great singer and amazing dancer, but also a very talented musician, and can play both the piano and guitar. He is particularly famous for his charismatic live stage performances, and contributed greatly to EXO's rapid rise to fame. EXO's 1st studio album 'XOXO' (2013) sold over 1 Million units with its repackage, making EXO the 1st Korean Act to do so in 12 years. EXO's 6th studio album, 'Don't Mess Up My Tempo' (2018), became their highest-charting album on the US Billboard 200, debuting at #23. In 2016, Zhang released his first EP, 'Lose Control' which hit #1 on the Gaon Album Chart and #4 on the Billboard US World Albums chart. He is the 1st Chinese Solo Artist to hit the Top 25 on the Billboard 200 and was the 1st Chinese Solo Artist to hit Top 5 on the Worldwide iTunes Album Chart! Since his debut as a Solo Artist, Zhang has produced and released over 100 songs including 4 studio albums and 5 EPs, and has won numerous music awards.

Zhang made his first appearance in the US at Lollapalooza 2018 with DJ #AlanWalker. The duo later collaborated on a remixed version of Zhang's previous single "Sheep", titled "Sheep Relift". Zhang's 2nd album 'Namanana' was released in 2018 ft. 22 songs, including a collab with American singer #Bazzi. 'Namanana' debuted at #21 on Billboard 200, with Lay becoming the highest ranked Mandopop artist in history! The album also topped the Billboard World Albums and Independent Albums charts. In December he joined Chinese EDM talent show 'Rave Now' as a mentor alongside Alan Walker. In 2019, Zhang attended the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, the only Chinese celebrity to be invited. On February 26, 2019, he released the #MichaelJackson tribute "Let's Shut Up & Dance" with #JasonDerulo & #NCT127. On March 15, 2019, Lay released the digital single "Lovebird" with US EDM and hip-hop group 'Far East Movement' and on June 14, he released his digital EP 'Honey' which sold over 1.87 million digital copies 3 minutes after release on QQ Music, breaking his personal record for 'Namanana' and earning a Gold Diamond certification. Lay embarked on his first international concert tour, 'Grand Line', in July 2019. Tickets at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai sold out in 8 seconds. In August 2020, Zhang began appearing as a mentor and captain in the third season of the Chinese dance survival show 'Street Dance of China'. He also filmed for the drama Challenges at Midlife. In 2020, Zhang founded the Chromosome Entertainment Group and serves as CEO and producer. He has been ranked in the Top 20 of the Forbes China Celebrity 100 for multiple years, and on the CelebrityZ Top 100 Most Valuable Celebrities list ranking 23rd in 2016, published by market research company Kantarand Chinese business magazine CBN Weekly.

Zhang released his 4th studio album, 'Producer', on February 5, 2021, powered by its lead single "Joker". On June 7, 2021, after a 3-year absence from Exo, Zhang appeared on their top-selling EP 'Don't Fight the Feeling'. On October 7, 2021, he released the single "Samadhi Real Fire", the pre-release single for his new EP 'East', which was released on October 15. Lay is also a TV star and a very talented actor, and has starred in 'Ex-Files 2' (2015), later winning the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 2016 China Britain Film Festival for his performance. He wrote and recorded the OST "Alone (One Person)", which reached No. 1 on the Baidu Music Chart and later won the award for 'Best Movie Original Soundtrack' at the 16th Top Chinese Music Awards and 4th V-Chart Awards. He also starred in the top rated TV series 'The Mystic Nine' (2016), which set a record for the most online views in a day, and in 'Kung Fu Yoga' (2017), 'The Island' (2018), 'The Golden Eyes' (2019), 'Empress of the Ming' (2019), 'Crime Crackdown' (2021), and 'No More Bets' (2023).

Lay is also a Fashion Icon and has been the spokesman/ambassador for over 50 brands including Calvin Klein, Chaumet, H&M, Hublot, Ray-Ban, Bang & Olufsen, Biotherm Homme, Epson, Wedgwood, Fila, Decorte, Calbee, Dell computer, Daniel Wellington, Ballantine's, Burger King, Oral-B, Pizza Hut, Converse, MAC Cosmetics, Milka Chocolate, Perrier & Valentino. He was Calvin Klein's first Chinese global spokesperson for their underwear and jean lines and attended multiple fashion shows and events in Asia and Europe for Valentino. In 2019, he made a Superstar appearance at the Met Gala in New York City as the ambassador for Valentino, causing a media stir in a custom-made suit called "Time Traveller" designed by the house's creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli.

Lay is also an active philanthropist, and in 2025 he established the 'Zhang Yixing Arts Scholarship' Foundation, providing scholarships for his alma mater middle school, Hunan Masters College Middle School, donating 100 thousand yuan annually. In 2016, Zhang made a generous donation to a joint Weibo public welfare funding project, in support of impoverished families for the upcoming Lunar New Year. In 2016, Zhang was appointed Publicity Ambassador of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) and attended the 2016 BAZAAR Stars' Charity Night, donating 10 ambulances worth 700 thousand yuan. Due to his charitable contributions, Zhang was ranked 15th by the China Philanthropist Magazine in the '2016 China's Top Philanthropist Celebrity List'. Zhang attended the 2017 BAZAAR Stars' Charity Night and donated 15 ambulances for 1.05 million yuan. In January 2018, he starred in a public welfare movie 'I'm Beside You', in which he sang and composed the theme song. On March 30, 2018, he starred as a guest recitalist in CCTV's 'Trust in China' talk show. In 2017, Lay was ranked #18 by the China Philanthropist Magazine in their Top Philanthropist Celebrity List. In June 6, 2024, Zhang was appointed as the culture and tourism ambassador of the Hunan province.
