Now that it seems NiziU is taking the Japanese market by storm/garned lots of interest in South Korea as well and rolled out another Globalization by Localization (GBL) group called Boy Story last year aimed at the Chinese market, do you think foreign members in JYPE groups will be a thing in the past? On one hand foreign members have been crucial to building a global fanbase, as seen by TWICE and Got7. However, in their newer groups like Stray Kids and Itzy, all of the members have been Korean (even if some of them speak English, they're still ethnically Korean)!

In the latest financial reports, it looks like they're planning in debuting a new girl group, new boy group, and new boy band in the coming years. And as Kpop is shifting/is already in the next generation, do you guys think JYPE will include say a Chinese or Japanese or Thai or Vietnamese member?

His recent strategy with Itzy, building up hype around each member through subtle yet effective promotion (like Yeji in the Fan, Ryujin in Mixnine and Bts's Highlight Reels, Yuna in Bts's Highlight Reels, and Chaeryeong's participation in SIXTEEN, and all members, with the exception of Lia, on the Stray Kids Survival Show) could totally be applied to JYPNGG. Although
Akari from Nizi Project said she would have to return to Japan if she was eliminated, which she was,
and the status of every eliminated member is still up in the air, she has proven to be someone JY Park and fans adore. The hype she has already would be extremely beneficial for his next Korean GG.

I've heard a lot of debate about what his current GG strategy is, like the possibility that Itzy is JYPE's f(x) while a bigger/primary GG is in the works or that his next GG will be vocally based like 15& or Mamamoo. No hate to Itzy whatsoever. They're doing phenomenally both domestically and globally and I'm in no way suggesting they're secondary in terms of priority or talent. So what do you think?
1. Will JYPE include foreign members in their next groups?
2. Since JYPE is one of the leaders in the industry will this force other entertainment companies to follow in suit, especially since SM has already kicked off their GBL progam with WayV and Big Hit is speculated to begin with their own Japanese GG?

1. I think that at least in the near future that geographically diverse membership still makes economic sense. It helps build a wider fanbase for the groups which can help enhance revenue. Also allows for the non-Korean members to bring more influx of money from cfs in their home markets to defer costs.
2. Just because a business model works in your market does not mean that it will elsewhere. It is a higher risk proposition.

1. For now it does seems to be their strategy to minimize foreign members with as you mentioned Stray Kids and Itzy being all Korean. Speaking on the ngg specifically, Jiayu a Taiwanese trainee left last year and Nizi project got rid of the remaining known foreign trainees.
And if it's true that Akari's in Japan that just leaves Yuna and Lily M (I don't think he'd sign Riria or Momoka tbh) as kinda foreign members.
So it seems rn that if the gg debuts soon (2021-ish) it'd be only Korean but if they debut later it could be more of a twice model. I would guess the same w the bg since a Chinese bg is confirmed and it was said that if Nizi was successful they'd make a boy version and..yeah

2. There certainly are things in the works with SM announcing plans American gg and and European bg but even they say it'll probably be 5 or more years from now so who knows if they'll follow through. Realistically it's a strategy only large companies can rly pull off so I think most of the industry will just stick to sprinkling foreign members into their main groups.

Mmm..I donno...on one hand, foreign members have definitely helped build fandoms beyond the shores of SK and given groups a more global appeal. Twice's success in JP is partly due to the presence of J-line, likewise Got7 in Thailand. On the other hand, geopolitics can make things messy - Tzuyu with the whole flag incident, Sana with the Heisei era post , and Jackson + other Chinese idols over the whole 7-dash line issue. I do believe that JYPE is experimenting, possibly seeing whether having an all-Korean group will minimize political drama while still being able to grow globally. But I don't think it's a done deal - I think there are plenty of circumstances where foreign idols will find their way onto the group's roster, even in the big agencies experimenting with local groups.

A localization strategy, using Nizi Project as the main example. is at the core of it a market penetration strategy. Despite the success of 2PM and Twice in Japan, there is still a large subset of the Japanese population that haven't really checked them out or warmed up to them because of their aversion to things foreign like Kpop. You can certainly see some of those people showing up in various Nizi comments section. Throughout the 2 seasons, JYPE has been rather unabashed about using the Nizi platform to promote the agency, their various groups, and even JYP himself. The show even managed to get Feel Special charting higher at one point. So it's really market penetration for the whole agency, not just for the new localized group.

Despite NiziU doing so well at the outset, I don't think JYPE will be content with that. For one thing, the new group is a jointly managed group with Sony Music, unlike their partnership with WMJ for Twice. Both control and revenue for NiziU is likely being shared - that means that the group will probably have to do almost twice as well as Twice in order to bring the same benefits to JYPE. And who know what joint-management conflicts might crop up with SonyM in the future. Second, NiziU might help open more doors, but JYPE's other groups will still have to do their part in appealing to potential new fans. At least in the case of Twice, their J-line has done much to popularize the group in Japan.

Even with NiziU around, the presence of JP members in Twice is still a plus for the group. J-line is popular not only with J-fans, but I-fans as well, and Tzuyu is extremely popular in Japan and SK. Despite the foreign members having caused (through no fault of their own) more than their share of drama for the group, support for them is unwavering. While I think JYPE will be a bit more aware of the risks that idols from certain countries can bring, I believe that a foreign idol with the right mix of looks and talents will still be able to debut in SK.

In the future, these new "localized" groups will probably aspire for more global recognition of their own. Who knows...maybe not right away, but one day we might see another JYPE/Sony Music group based in Japan but incorporating foreign idols, possibly even Korean idols, of their own.

1. Yes. Now that China has removed the ban on South Korea, they will be able to debut Chinese boys and girls in K-Pop and group promote in China.
2. SM now has WayV. Big Hit will go for a GGJPN, YG tried to make a Japanese boy group with TREASURE (MAGNUM), and YG will also debut a Chinese girl group. JYP also held auditions in Thailand to make a new boy group and girl group in that country.

JYP has NiziU in Japan, Boy Story and a 2nd BG in China, 2 Thailand teams, GG and BG. YG is rumored to debut a GG but a Korean one, not Chinese.

No, I honestly feel one of the big reasons Nizi was able to gain traction was because of TWICE and a big part of what helped them grow post TT was having 3 Japanese members.
I think it helps companies break trough a little easier and makes the mainstream media more open to the idea of Kpop groups going into their market-it makes it less threatening imho if they have home grown talent in those foreign groups.

I think with GBL we'll just see an increase of foreign trainees from Japan, China, SEA, etc and the ones that don't fit into those region specific groups such as Niziu and Boy Story could still be used in other projects within the companies.

Just look at the members of Nizi Project multiple popular contestants just missed out on debuting...why waste that when you could maybe think about up coming Korean groups or w/e.

Not only in Japan and Korea we will see more GBL groups, but in SEA as well. Not Jyp, but RBW already debuted a vietnamese boy group. The quality is so and so, but they have potential.
