Round 1
The wind was howling as the blizzard seemed to be picking up pace again. Hercule Poirot looked out of the window towards the pond. He couldn’t see it very well because of the falling snow and for a moment he wondered. How lucky they had been to find the girl at all.
The blizzard had seemed to take a momentary break in the morning and a Maid had trudged through towards the Shed by the lake to collect some firewood in case the blizzard started again. When she came back to the house, she looked pale as if she had seen a ghost. Everyone had been around the dinner table enjoying the Warm soup and buns but the maid’s appearance at the doorway and screams had made them all abandon their meals. Poirot had accompanied Mr. Brown and Mr. Edmund Junior as they all rushed towards the pond.
Isabella was a beautiful young lady. Just 2 months shy of her 22nd birthday, she had been a warm and lively presence in the Mansion. But there she had laid near the pond. Her face white as chalk and lips blue. If it wasn’t for how pale she looked, you might think she was asleep. Her clothes were neat like as if she had carefully laid down on the snow for a night’s rest…
It wasn’t sleep though. No one would sleep out there in the snow.
They had brought her back and moved her to the basement as the police nor the ambulance could reach the mansion as the blizzard had made roads impossible to pass through. “It would take 2 days if the blizzard doesn’t pick up again, a week more at least if it does.” That is what the Constable had said.
It was going to be a long week then. He sighed as he walked towards the Parlour. He hadn’t expected to see Mr. Edward Hollow there so he was surprised to see the older gentleman, his eyes bloodshot and his hands holding a glass of whiskey.
“Aah Poirot, my old friend… Fancy a glass of Whiskey?”
“I am afraid I am will have to refuse Monsieur.” Poirot refused as he sat on the armchair next to the man. Edward sighed as he took a sip. He was shaking. The room was warm though, toasty even.
“Isabella… my lovely child…” His voice was low and poirot could hear the pain in his voice.
He reached out and held the Man’s hands.
“I know it is not the right time to ask, but I will have to…” He looked at the man with sympathy before asking the question that had plagued his mind since discovering the young girl amongst the snow. “Everyone say it is suicide… How are they so sure?”
The lines in Edward’s face deepened as his expression turned dark.
“What are you suggesting?”
“It’s not a suggestion, my friend… but a question.”
“No one would kill my girl. No one!”
Poirot looked at the man who glared at him. And then his eyes wandered to the portrait that hung above the fireplace. 6 people looked at him. Edward Hollow was seated. Sitting beside him was his wife. And around them, their four children. All of them were smiling. A happy family. He gazed at the girl on the right. Her black hair framing her face and her dark eyes twinkling.
“No one but herself. Is that what you suggest?”
His gaze shifted to the old man. His eyes had softened. And his face no longer seemed to hold anger but only pain. He looked tired and defeated.
“She was in love.”
Love… Poirot sighed.
“Who was it?”
Edward’s face seemed to darken again as he took a sip of his whiskey and then looked Poirot dead in the eye. “Not someone she should have lost her heart to.”
Should Hercule Poirot…
a. Ask for the Name of the person Isabella fell in love with.
b. Not prod for more information and go instead to talk to the Maid who had found Isabella’s body.
c. Pour himself a whiskey and wait to see if Edward will speak more.
d. Ask whether Edward fought with Isabella.
