Twenty, fresh-faced, Chaeyoung spoke without hesitation. Which things are cool, which things are free, which things are really herself.
As expected, I thought cool would suit you. It was fun. I am the maknae in the team, and having debuted at a very young age, I have this cute image, you see. When I was a trainee I had the position of rapper, and I myself thought a strong image suited me. But after debut, it changed a lot. So this kind of concept was pleasant/welcome and fun. I don’t really have the chance to show this.
I thought that ‘Young&Wild,” that Chaeyoung wrote, was very much like you. Even though you sing cute and lively songs, it seemed like you had a personality that was untamed/wild. Really? I like showing that kind of duality. I like the aspect of making people think, “She looks like this, but you weren’t this kind person?” In the early stages of debut, I didn’t grab onto my personality/individuality or likes/preferences. Now, I draw and write. While determining my likes/preferences, I think I’ve come to know who I am.
What are the things that Chaeyoung likes? I look for things that are fun. I dislike things that are the same. Even if it’s the same vintage, I want to draw something there, put a fabric/material that I like there, expand it, and sew. Even the t-shirt that I am wearing right now, I re-purposed it by tearing the vintage off of the shoulder part. If I imbue my own touch (lit. own hand), it becomes something else. Even though I can express myself on stage, I think that I can express myself through different means also.
There was a time when you just appeared with a short cut, right? When I am caught up in something, I am of the nature to have to do it. Kristen Stewart’s short cut is so cool. Even if you don’t do anything, it looks cool - the appearance of dusting off one’s hair. So I cut it. My hair manager asked it was ok, and I said I’d be responsible for it. The members were really surprised as well.
Kristen Stewart looks cool just wearing only roughly rolled-up pants and a baggy t-shirt, right? Isn’t she? One day, Kristen came to the Cannes Film Festival wearing a dress and Converse. There was even a time when she took off her heels on the red carpet and stood barefoot. If you think about it, you really don’t have to wear heels on the red carpet, right? It’s not someone’s decision, and you don’t have to do it that way. I think it’s cool to break those implicit rules. I, too, what to be that kind of person.
There’s that part in the lyrics that you wrote. “Wear the most comfortable shoes, tie them tightly. Go where your two feet lead.” Haha. I believe in wearing comfortable shoes. Those that suit me, that are active/dynamic. I like sneakers and walkers, and Chelsea boots. I’m short, but I don’t try to look tall.
What is freedom for Chaeyoung? I think freedom is being able to express what I want to express.
In an interview with Billboard, you said that you want to show a fierce concept. FANCY and BREAKTHROUGH have fierce images that are different from the previous directions. Chaeyoung seems particularly pleased with this change. There are people who see FANCY and say that our concept has simply changed to sexy. It’s a bit sad. Sexy alone is not our breakthrough. While we have shown lively and energetic images before, FANCY shows a more confident and forthright image. Through this turning point, because we put messages (stating) that we have more things to show, to me, I feel the most affinity with this album.
In the GQ Digital Contents filming, you selected “boyish,” “unique,” and “sporty” as your favorite keywords. You seem to have a strong desire to free yourself of the old and to pursue the new. Some people think of idols as only having pretty and cute images that are full of aegyo, but I want to expand that. Idols can be this image and that image. I think we are able to express ourselves through different means. These days, I think there are people who are expanding step by step, and I like that. In my own way also, I am saying that idols don’t have to only show what has been.
Off stage, what is your preferred style? Vintage, hippie. I enjoy wearing short, sleeveless denim shirts, walkers, and I also like comfortable one-pieces. Something that doesn’t look decked out. I like to wear clothes that look as if it’s been worn for a long time. I don’t particularly like new clothes. I’d like it a bit more worn and the color faded. I visit vintage shops enthusiastically.
You don’t like things that are decked out/manufactured/done up? Yup. Because it’s a profession in which we are constantly visible. One day I am swollen, there’s something I don’t like, I want to lose weight - there are times like these. After all, however, hiding and living like this, I want there to be meaning. I always write these kinds of lyrics when I am writing. Show yourself, as you are.
The scent is nice. What perfume do you use? A woody (foresty) perfume. The heavy and bitter scent of trees/wood. I always spray this during the summer. It’s nice, right? I like this neutral scent.
That’s cool. I think anything can be cool. There’s a musician named, Sky Ferreira. She coolly takes in vintage that can make her look sloppy. First of all, I thought I have to a cool person such that the things that I wear are also cool.
But, what’s cool? These clothes are cool, those words are cool. If you think back to it, then I think it is naturally cool. It should make an impression in your memory like that. I wanted to become a singer because I saw cool people. Now, I make an effort and think it’d be nice if someone saw me as cool.
Regarding the nickname “baby beast,” that the fans made for you, I think I see through to the duality. Lovely and innocent, but with concealed teeth, and grown up wonderfully. As it’s not only cute, I like it. Even though on the surface I look like a baby, I want to become a person who is kind but not weak-hearted. A person who is good to others, but with defined perspectives, a person with likes/preferences, and a person who is able to impart opinions with conviction.
Members comment that Chaeyoung has a positive, confident, and easygoing style. Mina-unnie said so. She thinks that I have my own alone time. That I am not in a hurry. Because I think, “you can do it.” If you think that you have to do well, it can be a burden. I think, “I just do what I do.”
It’s been 5 years since debut, full 20 years old, how old are you now? When I was a kid, I had really wanted to become an adult. I didn’t want to hear, “Because you’re still young.” In reality, there aren’t any big changes. My mom feels sorry that I went out into society so early, but I like it. I was able to experience many things earlier than my peers.
Have you ever done something on impulse because you all of a sudden wanted to do it? Um, I recently went from COEX to Cheongdam intersection. But, I didn’t see any taxis. I thought I’d go ahead and walk, so I walked there.
Without managers, without a mask? Yes. When I’m by myself, I don’t use a mask. Even though I am recognized, I don’t care all that much. I’m a celebrity, but I don’t think I have to go around wrapped up tightly. Rather, I’m not conscious of other’s gazes, and I think I should behave comfortably.
You often draw in ink, right? I have a smallish ink pen that I like. It is good for drawing and writing. I draw, following the direction of my hand, and if it’s in the form of a grandfather, then I draw like the grandfather, drawing flowers there. I used to draw when I was frustrated or feeling down. I’m a person who places importance on one’s own time, since I did not have time in the early stages of debut, after schedules I would turn on a mood light, and draw and scribble while listening to songs. That is my greatest comfort. On my wall, I put up a drawing, Picasso’s words, “Drawing is another way of writing a diary.”
Who is your favorite artist? Recently, I’m hooked on an artist named Hundertwasser. The vivid colors and odd forms are beautiful. I always like Basquiat.
I heard, when you were a kid, you were seriously considering the fine arts? When I was a trainee, I considered at the time prior to my singing. I wanted to go and study abroad and run into the expansive world. If I had not been a singer, I would have done something to express and create things in some way.
Is your job fun? Yes. Because the work that I am doing now also, I am expressing myself very much actively. However, when unexpected situations arise or when I worked hard to this extent but it didn’t look to that extent, it would have been very hard if I had been alone. But because there are 8 members by me, I am encouraged. That is especially true this year. We really like each other. More so than other friends, because we understand each other. We’re family now, you see.
Even though you chat excitedly with the members, there are times when the members can’t understand what you are saying. What kinds of moments are those? There are times when I keep saying different things. Because my thoughts have a tendency to go in different directions. But there are times when only Sana-unnie understands. Sana-unnie also has a very peculiar way of thinking.If I show a picture I’ve drawn, the other members react, “What’s this?” But Sana-unnie says, “So you drew this. So you drew this with this kind of mind, right?” She’s almost always right.
If you changed your hairstyle now, how would you do it? I’ve tried red, green, orange, pink, and blonde, but I think black suits me the best. This time, I’d like to try an even shorter cut. Two-block is good. I want to try pushing it back.
If you could paint today’s feeling, what would you draw? I would draw two people. Two people - me, and the me that has changed. I would also draw a lot of flowers. When I’m in a good mood, I always draw flowers.
