#1. AKMU - NAKKA (FEAT. IU)
As mentioned in last week's ICYMI, AKMU had announced that they would be releasing a collaboration album titled NEXT EPISODE, which would have songs featuring several of K-pop's biggest names on them. And what better way to do it than to have the title track, "NAKKA", feature none other than IU herself? The track, having two giants of the digital music scene in South Korea, embraces unexpected electronic influence which results in a style we’ve never really heard from either artist. The rhythmic chorus isn’t too dissimilar from the beat drop hooks we've come to hear ever so often. AKMU play around with the instrumental, allowing "NAKKA" to have a sense of spontaneity that enhances its bite. While there are some great hooks here, one can't help but anticipate the song to go a step further, even though it seems intent on pulling back at every turn. It's a great showcase of the vocal capabilities of the trio, but it just feels like they could have taken it to the next level given the caliber of artistry present on this track.
#2. DREAMCATCHER - BECAUSE
As a way to herald in the last few weeks of summer in South Korea, Dreamcatcher have made their comeback with a special mini-album titled Summer Holiday and its lead single "BEcause", a track that stays true to the elements which have made their releases so consistent. The song injects the summer season with a nice touch of horror, though most of the creepy stuff is relegated to its music video, which may I add as a side note, is one of their most enticing ones yet and that really says a lot as many would agree that they've put out some fantastic music videos over the years. As a piece of rock-infused K-pop, "BEcause" is sturdy and satisfying. The song's most interesting moments happen in the verses, whether during the brisk intensity of verse one or the cool breakdown that pulls us into verse two. If the chorus doesn't get your attention during the first listen, it surely won't be long until it eventually does grow on you. For a song packed with several goodies, it makes sure to deliver on Dreamcatcher's usual straightforward blitz of energy. If there's one complaint though, it would come in the form of the feeling that this seems like a missed opportunity. When they labelled this as a "special" mini-album, many people imagined that it would be an opportunity that would give them more leeway for experimentation with the title track in particular, but we only see it from the b-sides of which "Whistle" and "Alldaylong" are perhaps the two standouts.
#3. D.O - ROSE
It has been a long time coming but we can finally say that we now have a solo album from EXO’s D.O, something fans have long clamored for especially since his smooth vocal style always seems to add soul and groove to his group’s tracks. He makes his official solo debut with his first mini-album Empathy, and neither it nor the title track "Rose" should come as a surprise to anyone who has kept up with how he states that his desire to release songs which are easy-on-the-ears and hold true to an acoustic sound. The b-sides also offer a lot whether it comes from the heartfelt lyrics of "Dad", the widely favorited "I'm Gonna Love You" (which also happens to feature the trendy rapper Wonstein) or from his exemplary English and Spanish pronunciations on "Rose (English Ver.)" and "Si Fueras Mia" respectively. This may not be the pure R&B album that a lot of people hoped from him, but it's a perfect showcase of his emotions and talents as one of K-pop's strongest vocalists over the past decade.

Yeah D.O's Spanish pronunciation has always been highly praised ever since EXO's 2014 cover of Sabor a Mi and even though I'm not a Spanish speaker, I've seen a lot of comments from native speakers who have said his pronunciation on Si Fueras Mia this time is close to perfect. Thanks for the news updates!!
