well what you're risking with when you want to live in Victoria is with the wild weather, you're more prone to flash flooding and all that. I know suburban area of Melbourne is expensive but its a whole lot safer.

San Bernardino mountain range here in Southern California maybe? No moose but deer and big horned sheep, beaver, bobcat, coyotes, possums, bears and much more. Snow in the winter at elevation. You can find some reasonable prices for housing but food is more expensive than if you buy it below in the valleys. People seem nice.
