Shabekuri 007 preview

Congrats to the girls on being invited to be on Kohaku. It's a huge honor.
I genuinely had forgotten about kohaku with how crazy this year has been. It should have been expected considering how huge they got in Japan and how much successful Make You Happy was. By what the girls have been talking about the lyrics of Step and a Step I kind of feel like this is gonna be a Feel Special kind of song in the meaning of the lyrics. As long as it is upbeat I think it'll do fine. Ballads from idol groups in Japan don't necessarily do poorly but upbeat songs mostly do better.
I hope Maya recovers well from whatever she is going through. Hopefully it's something minor.
I feel like the girls are starting to get used to being on tv shows and seem less nervous. The Shabekuri preview kind of answers my question if they would be on non music variety shows. I'm glad because that is one of the ways to gain more of a broad audience and not be pigeonholed into wotaku and koreaboos alone. I also think Maya and Rima can be great on variety. Rio speaks well imo but she still seems a bit too shy to pop off on variety. Nina I think has potential to do well too but she still isn't 100% comfortable with Japanese. She can speak well but still takes a second or two to formulate her phrases sometimes which limits her reaction timing. With time I think she can do great on variety too. Poor Riku though is gonna get the foot massage treatment lol.
One thing that comes to mind and could be an issue going forward is if they are gonna end up doing gravure or not. It's a huge part of Japan's culture specially for female entertainers and I can see that clashing real hard with the Korean side of things. They don't rely on Korea for their fandom but as we've seen several times are still targeted for criticism by people that want to push the Japan hate in Korea. I can see Sony pushing for it and even if there is some backlash from some Korean netizens I doubt it will affect the girls and their results, but I'm not sure how JYPE will feel about it. None of the Twice members have done actual gravure work to this point, but they also aren't focused mainly in Japan as NiziU is for now. Personally I don't care about gravure one way or another, although it does get creepy when Japan does it with some of the younger girls.

I'd normally say that they girls are too young to do gravure, but unfortunately I know that's not true as it does happen in Japan. Still, I don't think it's going to happen any time soon. For one thing, they are still JYPE artists, and any criticisms they get for doing gravure is also going to be directed at the agency, and that will in turn affect the other artists under the label. Plus, with JYP previously embroiled in his "bible study" scandal, I'm not sure that's the direction he wants to take. I just don't see JYPE taking that chance, especially since there are so many other potential revenue streams to exploit (though admittedly the gravure fruit is a very low-hanging one). One thing that comes to mind and could be an issue going forward is if they are gonna end up doing gravure or not. Niziu has global aspirations that other JP artists that opted for gravure may not have. I just think there's too many downsides internationally (not just Korea) if Sony tries to push the gravure angle.

StanSo today as a point of interest. Make You Happy (Korean version) became the most watched KPOP GG MV of 2020 from a GG that debuted in 2020. This could and probably will change once AESPA comes out, but as of at least today it finally edged out the previous #1 place. (Who Dis). So they are #1 in Japan and Korea for 2020 youtube views of 2020 debut GG of both Japan and Korea. Also as a note they have the second most watched GG video in Japan ever. #1 being AKB48 Koisuru Fortune Cookie, #2 NiziU Make You Happym, #3 AKB48 Heavy Rotation.

I dont think they are gonna participate in gravure photoshoots. They are gonna appear principally in fashion magazines like cancam, vivi, nonno, seventeen, etc etc.
