My mom and uncle taught me a lot about the basics and stuff. I still ask my uncle for advice for some things, but I do look at new recipes online or in the one cookbook we have lol.

I shall not speak about the prison food lmao jk, but usually when my brother goes grocery shopping he barely buys vegetables and a lot of ready-made meals so he just pops them in the oven. The meals aren't balanced, the proportions are weird and sometimes he doesn't even try making it taste nice. I always yell at him for it.
I would take charge of cooking and cook every day if I wanted to but my brother excepts everything handed to him so I want him to learn

Man, that sucks but I feel you on that one. It's painfully awkward and never fun; happened far too many times that I lost count
Hopefully you won't get into that situation again, or like, the people you don't know will initiation conversations with you so you don't have to feel that way.
