lately the band has been sharing tweets during the anniversaries of their singles and albums, for example "10 years ago we released this song!" stuff like that
so I've been considering doing something like that too, i want make a post covering each of their releases in chronological order and maybe some trivia while at it but i'm not sure how long i want to make them or if i want to share my personal opinions on them
for now let's keep things simple and start with their very first
So is common knowledge that DOLL is SCANDAL's debut single, that said it isn't their first release! that honor goes to...
#1: space ranger
"space ranger" (スペースレンジャー) is SCANDAL's first single, it was released on March 3, 2008, the date was picked to coincide with the festivity of Hinamatsuri, the single was published under the label Kitty Records, it costed ¥500 and the CD was actually a DVD that included a music video along footage from the members in the studio, not only it was the band's first release but also the start of their "indie trilogy" of singles that lead to their major debut under EPIC RECORDS later that year
the song was written by HARUNA and TOMOMI, the music was composed and arranged by Ryosuke Shimohata and MASTERWORKS
only 1,000 copies were printed for the initial release and the single was exclusive to Tower Records, it debuted at #2 in their weekly indie artists chart
it also was the 2nd song they ever performed live outside Japan, it was in early March of 2008 during the first stop of their "Japan Nite Us Tour"
worth mention that the original single isn't currently available for download or streaming and instead now the song is only available under the Japanese name "スペースレンジャー" as part of their album "BEST★SCANDAL", as opposed to what they title would led you to think this is not a compilation album but i plan to cover that later in the future so for now let's stop there
what's interesting is that back in 2008 it actually was released on digital stores across the world, it became available on April 9 of that year, part of the reason was that the original print of the CD version was only 1,000 copies and that it was only released on Japan, the band actually gained many fans during their appearance in Sakura Con so in part this was the only way for them to get a hold on SCANDAL's music
the news was shared on SCANDAL's short lived newsletter "SCANDAL vol.0001" (to my knowledge there never was a Vol.0002)
i can't find information of when it was taken down but by 2010 people weren't able to access the itunes page for it, worth mention (as stated above) that by this point the song was already released as part of their first album
the band released two music videos for the song but unfortunately they aren't currently available on Youtube, there are uploads on external sites so in absence of official uploads i'm going to temporally use those
(Vimeo doesn't allows linking of their videos so follow the direct links below)
the first version was included in the DVD version of the single and features the members performing in their uniforms in a studio
direct link:
SCANDAL - space ranger (first version)
the second version was included in the DVD version of their second single "Koi Moyou" and features the members in a recording studio along clips of them in their private lives

On February 22 SCANDAL are going to hold a live stream on Youtube to commemorate the release of the "Mirror" documentary movie
they also teased a big announcement (new single?)
they also teased a big announcement (new single?)
#2: Koi Moyou
"Koi Moyou" 恋模様 (or "Love Pattern") is SCANDAL's 2nd single and the second release in their trilogy of indie singles leading to their major debut, it was released on April 4 of 2008, once again the single was exclusive to Tower Records
the song was written by HARUNA and arranged by MASTERWORKS
after seeing the strong demand for "space ranger" the band decided to double the initial print of their new single to 2,000 copies, it debuted at #1 in the Weekly indie artists chart, during the third week of April "Koi Moyou" was picked as "song of the week" by iTunes Japan
"Koi Moyou" was the band's first tie in song, the entertainment company "Jolly Roger" choose the single to be the theme song of their 2008 movie "Corazon de Melon" (コラソン de メロン), during the promotional activities for the movie the band were introduced to Takanori Nishikawa (better known as TM Revolution) the two would later go to collab in future releases
i want to clear out a minor misconception about the title, both "Koi Moyou" and "Love Pattern" have been used to refer to this song and both are actually valid names, these days is a little strange to have different names for SCANDAL releases but during this early era of the group it was the band themselves who decided to use the localization of the titles when engaging with international audiences, the first use of "Love Pattern" was in the band's short lived news letter "SCANDAL vol.0001" that was aimed at international fans, currently the English title could be said to have fallen out of use and "Koi Moyou" is now the preferred title
as with "space ranger" the original single isn't currently available for download or streaming on it's own but instead is now bundled as part of the track list of their first album "BEST★SCANDAL", there are two versions of the music video for "Koi Moyou", unfortunately they aren't currently available on Youtube but there are uploads on external sites, in absence of official uploads i'm going to temporally use those
the DVD version of "Koi Moyou" included a music video for their previous single "space ranger", in their future releases the band would include 2 music videos for "Koi Moyou"

the first music video was included in the DVD version of their third single "Kagerou", is an animated video featuring Anime versions of the members

#3: Kagerou
"Kagerou" (カゲロウ) is SCANDAL's 3rd single and the final release in their indie trilogy of singles leading to their major debut, it was released on May 5 of 2008 and once again it was exclusive to Tower Records where it debuted at #1 in their weekly indie artists chart
the song was written by TOMOMI in collaboration with MASTERWORKS, the music was arranged by Jin Nakamura
as stated above this was their final indie era single although there is still another release before their major debut, you may have noticed a pattern in the release dates for their singles, "space ranger" was released on March 3, "Koi Moyou" was released on April 4 and "Kagerou" on May 5
the DVD version of "Kagerou" included a music video for their previous single "Koi Moyou", the music video is available in said single's post

sorry for the post being so short, during this period of time SCANDAL were busy preparing for everything that was going to happen in the second half of the year, i have something as a bonus
just some days before the release of "Kagerou", on May 2, 2008, the soundtrack for the game "Star Ocean: Second Evolution" was released, the band performed the opening theme of the game "START"
to this day "START" is only available in the physical release of "Star Ocean: Second Evolution Original Soundtrack", it was excluded from the digital version and hasn't appeared in any official release by the band
previous post
i updated the post for space ranger and Koi Moyou, for starters i added author credits for the songs (since they were written by the members) also SCANDAL first international concert wasn't their Sakura Con performance, the other thing is the order in which their music videos were released, that was corrected so everything should be ok for now

#4: YAH! YAH! YAH! HELLO SCANDAL
YAH! YAH! YAH! HELLO SCANDAL ~Maido! SCANDAL Desu! Yah Yah Yah!~ (YAH!YAH!YAH!HELLO SCANDAL~まいど!スキャンダルです!ヤァヤァヤァ!~) is SCANDAL's first mini album and the final release in the indie era of the group, it was released on August 8 of 2008
the mini album is a compilation of their first three singles along a new song "Koi no Kajitsu" (恋の果実) which was written by TOMOMI and arranged by MASTERWORKS
during the period of time between the release of "Kagerou" and "YAH! YAH! YAH! HELLO SCANDAL" the band embarked on a tour that took them through North America, Europe and Asia, from August 18th to the 29th SCANDAL held their first Japan's nation wide tour "SCANDAL ライブツアー- Give me P.P. Tour 2008 -", at the final stop of the tour the band unveiled the news of their major debut and the release of their first major single, both scheduled for October of that year
supposedly there exist a promotional DVD for "YAH! YAH! YAH! HELLO SCANDAL" that includes the second version of the music video for "Koi Moyou", unfortunately the DVD was never sold on stores and is very hard to find, the music video is available in the post for said single
the most interesting part of the mini album is "Koi no Kajitsu", the song is exclusive to "YAH! YAH! YAH! HELLO SCANDAL" and hasn't appeared in any other physical or digital release by the band, that has helped to make this particular release even more rare and valuable
something to acknowledged about their indie releases, while they were released in 2008 they actually were recorded the previous year, you can find videos from 2007 featuring the band performing those songs
as expected from the end of their indie era the band would soon experience many major changes, one that would become noticeable very soon was, due to the insistence from their label, that starting from here all their following releases were to feature the members of SCANDAL in the covers of their singles, albums and DVDs
it wasn't until almost a decade later during the release of their compilation album "BEST ALBUM SCANDAL" and the creation of their independent label "her" that the band would go back to their roots and once again start using abstract imaginary for the art of their covers
the band released a music video for "Koi no Kajitsu" it was included as a bonus in the DVD version of their first album "BEST★SCANDAL", the video features footage of the members during their US tour with the song playing on the background, as stated above, in absence of official uploads i'm going to temporally use external uploads

no major changes this time
i'm not sure which is my favorite indie era SCANDAL release, some weeks ago i would had said "Kagerou" but now i feel is a tie between "Koi Moyou" and "Koi no Kajitsu"
so in 2009 SCANDAL released a short Anime series consisting of twelve 1 minute episodes, the members voiced the fictional versions of themselves
more info here:
it's a little low budget since i believe it was originally created only to released in the site of their official fan club, although eventually got a DVD release
i haven't watched the whole thing yet only some episodes, i recalled this was a thing so why not watch them? someone subbed all episodes and they are in pretty good quality
also let's post the title and synopsis for each one too
so far EP 4 is my favorite! i find it funny they didn't revealed the truth percentage of this one, i think the only fake part is that this inspired "space ranger" on the other hand this does seem to be the real origin story of how their mascot "Canta Kun" came to be, Mami was the one that created him and in the background story she gave him was that he is an alien temporally living on earth, that skull suit is actually just a costume to hide his real appearance
by the time i discovered SCANDAL they barely even acknowledged him anymore, poor Canta
although seems he was pretty "touchy" with the members so maybe that's why?
also i think he didn't got along that well with Mami since the two were rarely seen together

in EP 5 they talked about their first public live performance, it was in Shiroten Osaka Castle Park, these ones were in the same place that same year
being honest i have no idea if there is footage from their first ever concert in public specially since only one of those videos has a date
also searching for any videos of pictures from that era i found this picture
ESAKA MUSE >> MONTHLY PICKUP
www.arm-live.com
SCANDAL are below, this was in mid 2007, they look so different but unfortunately this is the highest quality version of this picture
just for curiosity i looked up the other girl band above, they were called "姫パラダイス" or Hime Paradise (Princess Paradise), i never heard of them before and i can't find any songs or music videos from them, the only thing i could find was this video on Youtube
sometimes when you see this old stuff you wonder "what if?", what if things had been different for SCANDAL? maybe the only mention of them would be in an obscure Japanese site that hasn't been updated in 15 years
or maybe if things had been different this thread would be called "Hime Paradise, the biggest girl band in Japan!" or "16 years with Hime Paradise!"
life is weird

sorry for going off topic in the post above, is just that i recalled that exactly a year ago BabySitter disbanded
theirs along the 2nd generation of BiS disbandment are the biggest "what if?" in Jpop / Jrock for me
the last EPs of SCANDAL's Anime!
just going to say that those truth percentages are incredibly optimistic
I've been getting curious about Canta kun, this page has tons of info on him
but the page also attributives the creation of Canta to Hidenori Taga who is the founder of Kitty Records but that is definitely wrong, by now is widely accepted by both the members and fans of SCANDAL that Mami created Canta, as a matter of fact the first appearance of him likely was before the band partnered with Kitty Records, although is worth mention that this page hasn't been updated in 10 years so they are probably using outdated info
also most mentions of Canta in this thread were done in the past weeks... in perspective i think he was kinda cute
