Episode 2 : Spoilers ahead


Things will get more interesting now. The presentation is done, same for the first evaluation. The top 9 got to choose their teammates, Ezaki Hikaru did not think too long she picked among the top 9 members. Smart move.

Since some of the original cells broke up, they had to reshuffle most of them to make a new team. But this time they got to choose, it's a good thing at least.

After that they all got setted in their dorm. Each cell had a small room with 3 beds. Funny the next morning some of them woke up early in order to get ready for the morning mission because they watched previous Produce seasons. It was a creative mission to have with those baby pictures.

So among 33 cells, 16 of them will be eliminated ? That's like half of them. BUT with the Planet Pass some of them are going to be saved, really cruel but they got kinda creative once again for more tensions.

They revealed the songs to perform, it was time to choose your song and to see who you're going to compete against. We got some "Chaejeong drama" from P48 saying they can beat the other team, but she talked too loud so everyone heard it. No idea if it will blow up or it will be forgotten.

On the next episode teaser, looks like one of the "all-star/avengers" team (maybe Yu Dayeon's) will get a bad evaluation. Unless it's only the editing like Mnet knows how to play with it. Not surprised if it's the case, with many strong constestants it can be harder to form a good team.


Su Ruiqi, I'm sure she won many people's vote. She's charismatic, had stage presence and more. I won't be surprised if she made it. However I'd like to see her do other concept than girl crush.
I also think Kang Yeseo will made it, she's very cute and she's doing very well. I'm happy for her, I followed Busters back in the days so I'm rooting for her. Despite her cute image she slayed her Crazy performance for example, that's what I'd like to see from Ruiqi.
I think either Choi Yujin or Cai Bing will made it. Yujin can remake Gaeun's story telling, who without the rigging should've made it. However I think Mnet will probably not choose two of the oldest contestants to be in the final group, only one leader is enough.

I was so afraid for Su Ruiqi but I am glad mnet didn't evil edit her. Her performance slayed!

I was sad they didn't show Xu Ziyin's performance, considering how much they show her reactions. But after watching her performance, I am glad they didn't because she can do so much better. Hopefully, she gets to shine next round. Her team seems fun!

I am not sure which Korean girl I like yet, I will have to see them more.

Initially I didn't get the hype of Ezaki Hikaru, but after watching her performance in Boombayah, I understand now. Her charisma is really good

Episode 2 done and here are my thoughts.

I was surprised that they glossed over the remaining performances. I figured they would try to spotlight them more considering they saved them for episode 2. Even though they chose a lot of people as candidates for top 9 I felt like they edited a lot out of the performances.

I don't know if the trainers were tired and it was near the end of the performances or if they were trying to push the narrative that J-group isn't behind the others in talent but I don't see at all what what they saw on the Joker team's performance. It wasn't a disaster, but it was a decent performance. Not really close to being a top 9 candidacy for all 4. Reina danced well and had good expressions, sang well for the most part but had breathing issues and didn't quite pull off the high note parts. Shihona had breathing problems singing the entire stage, danced ok a few odd looking moves and could have done a better job with her expressions. Fuka danced well, but her rap was very shaky and her expressions fluctuated too much. Ando Rinka sounded to me the best, it came at the cost of some dance moves which she toned down, but I don't blame her for it. I'll take that trade for a better sounding performance. She danced well and had good expressions too. As I've said before not gonna kill the girls for not being perfect singing live while dancing. It's a hard thing to do. However I'm also not going to gloss over it. Overall I can see giving Rinka a top 9 nomination and could be convinced on Reina, but Shihona and Fuka is pushing it to me.

Eighteen Girls with little less than a year average training between them delivered a pretty rough product, but that is to be expected. Not happy that their full version is the one with camera cuts instead of a single camera, but what can you do. Hyewon had a pretty nice voice and with some more training she might make a decent lead vocal. Did a good job with a not so challenging dance, but was expressionless or had faint awkward smile too often. Haeun is another girl who shouldn't really be the main vocal but got the job anyway. Her voice is alright, and maybe she wouldn't have stood out so much if she was more of a sub-vocal but that was very bad. She was also virtually expressionless throughout. Bahiyyih sang her parts well enough but had an awkward worried smile for long periods of time. Yeeun sounded the weakest vocally but had the best expressions of the four. She only faltered when she went off-pitch her second part. I wanna see how they do with a more active dance before I make any judgement. They all handled this choreo well though. The stage presence was lacking over all in this group. We'll see how they do next mission practicing with more experienced girls.

Team Fireworks got a pity edit and sounded a bit scripted. Not sure I buy the trainer recognizing Hyerim unless she worked with her in some way. Her performance was a bit of a mixed bag. She sang very well but her dance was a bit stiff even when she wasn't singing and had a awkward looking expression specially during her parts. Sunwoo's voice was decent, think she already is a solid sub-vocal. Went off-pitch her last two parts which is a shame. I think she did a good job dancing. Hard to tell since the full version was also the one with camera cuts. I liked her expressions at times, other times I think they weren't fully there. You Dayeon had some great expressions. Very varied and rich. Danced well over all, a few stiff looking moves, nothing too egregious though. Decent singing and sounded like she did a good job with her rap. Doah had decent expressions, seemed to dance well, a couple moves she short stepped during her parts, which is excusable. Her rap was alright, nothing outstanding, just enough to fit in a K-pop song. Her singing wasn't too impressive. It was a cohesive performance. No one made major mistakes, at the same time no one blew me away.

Ruiqi's solo was pretty decent. Think they overplayed it for the broadcast a bit because I didn't quite feel like she killed the stage. Her vocal were decent, she danced well enough, but neither were awe inspiring. She had good expressions and stage presence.

Seungeun's solo was also decent, but I'd say one step lower than Ruiqi's. She did a good job with the dance but her singing wasn't the best. She didn't crash and burn, it was more of a few mistakes here and there. Also good expressions, not quite the same stage presence.

I think the girls should have raised the key on their Maria performance. Specially Yizhou sounded pretty awkward singing that low. Don't think she is a bad singer so it would be nice to hear her singing in a more comfortable note. She did well dancing, a couple missteps. Both struggled with their expressions imo. Yizhou looked closer to the smug/chic feel but had no real change in her expression at all. Tzuling was almost expressionless. Her vocals were a bit more shaky, but her dancing was better. Not sure if this was just not a good fit for them song wise.

Bora and Jiyoon duo had a decent showing. Bora dancing was a bit awkward. The more powerful moves she couldn't keep her balance perfectly and a few of the moves came out awkward looking. She sang well and had good expressions. Jiyoon danced a bit better, still looked awkward in the body shake moves. Had decent expressions, not as rich and varied as Bora's. Sang well too but made a couple mistakes at the start and end of the performance.

At this point in Yujin's career we pretty much know very well her strengths and weaknesses. She had great expressions, her singing wasn't amazing and she danced pretty well. Would say her singing is decent enough specially in this group of girls and her dancing would be slightly above average.

The Boogie Up performance was a bit lacking. Vivienne was a bit stiff dancing, wasn't great singing specially her breathing and had a kind of awkward smile. Already knew May wasn't the best singer, she danced well though and had decent expressions. Sumomo had the best expressions, danced decently well, a few moves didn't look quite right, and her vocals also weren't great. Ayaka sounded the best but still not great, had a big breathing mistake. Danced well enough and had decent expressions, but could improve.

Whatta Man was a little bit better but not by much. Jiwon did an ok job singing, did a good job dancing and with her expressions. Rayeon had a couple big mistakes singing, but if you put her in a sub-vocal part she would have done fine. Danced well but her expressions fluctuated between looking worried and what the concept was supposed to be. Yubin singing was ok, her rap sounded better. Danced well and had good expressions. Jimin had the most trouble. Not really a great singer, her rap wasn't impressive, her dance was a bit more awkward and stiff, her expressions were decent but could be better. She lost her in-ear during a dance move, but I don't think that is enough to explain her vocals.

Witches team wasn't great either. Aratake Rinka's dancing is very awkward and her expressions was very blank. Her singing wasn't great but sounded a bit better than I was expecting going by her performances on youtube. Moka had good expressions, her dance was decent her vocals were shaky but not too bad. With some training she can be pretty decent. Kyara also had a very blank expression, her dance lacked energy but her vocals were alright. Had some breathing issues and was a little shaky at times. Also can be decent with some training.

Ziyin struggled quite a bit with singing. She can sing but she had projection issues, breathing issues, went off-pitch and I don't think the key she sang on worked well. Could be nerves or singing live while dancing, probably both. Did a good job with the dance and her expressions. Lost her earing so I guess her ears aren't pierced. Which isn't really relevant but just curious.

1000% performance followed the trend of not impressive stages. I knew Ito Miyu wasn't a super strong dancer and singer from her youtube covers, but she did a little better than I was expecting. She didn't look super awkward dancing, had a nice voice but very raw skill wise. Had some good some bad expressions. We'll see how much she improves. Hina also had a nice voice but very raw, went off-picth and really shouldn't be a main-vocal. Danced well and had decent expressions. Momoko sounded the best, but not by a lot. I think all three can be decent sub-vocals with some more training. Danced well but had a lot of blank and awkward expressions.

Cotton Candy team showed some promise but needs some cleaning up. Dana danced well, couldn't quite pull off her lines. The expressions are tricky in this song because the indifferent look is kind of part of the performance. Still wish she added more variety to it. Hyerin was a similar case, managed the dance, was a little lacking vocally but did a better job with more expressions. Min had pretty good expressions and did a good job with the dance. Had some breathing issues but did fine with her lines. She didn't get the hard parts though. Yeongyung's moves weren't as crispy as the other girls. She had the same issue with expressions as Dana. She pulled off her part well and the rap, but I wanna see how she does with more challenging lines. Sion also had some trouble singing her lines. She danced well and had decent expressions.

Not many girls stood out above the others. A lot of pretty solid but not quite fully fleshed performances. The girls that to me truly delivered an impressive performance were Hikaru, Youngeun, Jeongmin and Yaning. Don't really agree with the trainers top 9. A lot of narratives that seem to be more for the ratings. Yeseo had good stage presence and danced well but her singing just wasn't good enough. I also wouldn't have picked Cai Bing, her rap wasn't great and neither were her expressions, she just has very alluring eyes. Yujin and Ayana were also a step bellow some of the other girls performance wise. I think Ruiqi, Xiaoting and Jiyoon did well enough that I don't have a problem with them being in, but they are in the group of girls that all did somewhat similar that I think would all have equal arguments for being in i.e. Yurina, Chiayi, Kotone, Rei, Kim Dayeon, Ando Rinka, You Dayeon and Bora. A top 9 made off of the 4 I mentioned plus any combination of these girls would have been fine by me.

Too many of the full versions they uploaded to youtube were with camera cuts. Is it that hard to find the unedited single camera footage?

Kind of surprised Yujin chose May for her cell. I guess she wanted someone she was familiar with.

I'm happy everyone had a chance to chose their cell since it's so crucial to your survival but the way they just told the girls to just figure it out themselves was way too messy. There a lot of cells you can already tell will make it or not.

At least the voting hasn't crashed or bugged out from my experience on the Universe app, so that's good.

Not really happy with how the next mission is going to work. I'm fine with the way they chose the teams because it was somewhat random. What a lot of people forget is why PD101 went full audience votes decide to begin with. People were sick and tired of how the judges chose contestants on other audition shows and claimed favoritism. Sure full audience votes have their own issues not even taking into account the rigging scandal, but giving the judges so much power with doubling the points and even tripling it for one team is essentially the same as rigging audience votes but without the tricking the audience. Depending on how they do the points conversion from the voting this is a very easy way to just pick whoever you want to not be eliminated. Not to mention eliminating 48 in the first mission is way too much. They even added the failsafe to save one of each group in case their favorites somehow get eliminated, which is pretty blatant. Mnet truly never changes.

I won't bite on the preview edits so I'll just wait for episode 3 and see what really happens.

The 99.9% support thing is pretty harmless it seems. I wouldn't read too much into the girls popularities at the top since people can whale hard, but the bottom popularity I would say is probably pretty accurate.

I wish they were more creative with the songs they chose for the girls to cover. The only surprising one is Oh My Girl instead of Red Velvet, but even then it isn't that out there. Might as well have just added Into the New World there for the millionth time. I also prefer teams doing different songs. Watching 2 teams do the same performance gets boring super fast.
