They're cute! But, uhhh, hmmmm. The performance was pretty dreadful. The twins, people will find them cute, or funny, or creepy. They tried to perform Chocome's Hmph in order to compensate their vocal and dance skills.
Yeaaaaaaah, apparently we needed to cut to somebody else every second. Can’t see their dance properly because it keep cutting to the judge and audience reaction

I don't understand the format of the show. Why do the groups have different number of people, and some performed solo?Episode 1 ended, here I am for some sum up and thoughts. So spoilers ahead.
- Performance wise it was okay overrall, but vocally I find it kinda average or weak. We didn't see every team yet so we'll have to wait.
- Choosing a good song is really important, if you can carry it or if it's suited for your team's strength you can win. Those who performed Rumor and Wannabe for example, the songs were too difficult for them. On the other hand Kang Yeseo's team choosing Boombayah was great even if the whole team had a cuter image.
- The twins, people will find them cute, or funny, or creepy. They tried to perform Chocome's Hmph in order to compensate their vocal and dance skills.
- The drama was at the end with the Yaning-Yujin interaction. Obviously one of the highlights of this episode. The diss was so straightforward I think no one expected it, especially if the targer is Yujin a senior, a veteran idol. Mnet didn't had to create the drama, they were served and played along. They had their main villain.
- Kang Yeseo and Cai Bing are confirmed as my picks and they made it. Same for Chiayi.
- That episode 2 teaser with Yujin crying, whether she made it or not, Mnet knows how to tease us. It would be a big surprise if she didn't made it but with Mnet you can't tell.

Group: Shen Xiao Ting, Xu Ruo Wei, Chen Hsin Wei, Huang Xing Qiao
Again, RIP vocals. Huang Xingqiao can do better than this. Shen Xiaoting did very well, no wonder she was the C-group center.
Group: Murakami Yume, Kawaguchi Yurina, Kishida Ririka, Kitajima Yuna, Hayase Hana
Kawaguchi Yurina stable live
Where are the others? Anticipating Seungeun

No idea. What I understood was :I don't understand the format of the show. Why do the groups have different number of people, and some performed solo?
They are all teamed by trio, one K, one J and one C, they win and lose together. Here okay we understand.
However for the performance section they are doing it by "Country", either you do it alone like Yujin or Seungeun, or you do it with other members. Those who are chosen to be Top 9 can change their team if they want to change.
For example you are the Korean ranked #5 but you are with the Chinese ranked #30 and the Japanese ranked #25, you probably want to change and get better ranked members, a more popular member, etc. or you can keep your current team.
It can be confusing so I don't know if I got it. Looks like depending on your rating you can change for a better team, etc.

First episode down. They are really hammering down the whole connection between the groups thing and the guardians "protecting" the girls dreams. Kind of bizarre that they decided the groups arbitrarily, but not unexpected. They clearly made groups they thought would bring views. A bit surprised they emphasized the former JYP trainees but didn't even mention SM for the former SM trainees. Especially considering they performed an Aespa song. Maybe the girls have an nda or just didn't want to talk about it, but it's weird because I would imagine MNET would love throwing out SM's name there for clout.
It's interesting they did another evaluation with the signal song, and had the girls practice within their groups before the start of the show. I wonder how the teams for the performance were picked. My guess is the production team chose them trying to maximize interest on their performance. Also always curious about how they decided which song to perform. My guess would also be the production team chose them.
Not a big fan that only the top 9 can change their cells. With how the elimination process is set up your cell is extremely important so I would prefer if the girls had more control over it. Considering they depend on how the trainers evaluate them and that is inevitably fallible and biased. For a first episode I thought the K-pop masters and the trainers did well. Didn't agree entirely with all their opinions, but I'm neither a professional or there live to see the full unedited performance. The most important part is that I felt they were giving the girls more constructive feedback than being needlessly cruel for ratings or being overly nice and not helping them improve.
About the Visual Killer performance of Rumor. I thought Xiaoting did a better job with her expressions than in her solo signal song performance. She still had a few expressionless parts and I wish she added more variety to it, but it's an improvement. She definitely is a good dancer, that is undeniable, if she just nails her expressions her stage presence will explode. Vocally she did fine, nothing too impressive or disappointing. She was shaky at the start but she was doing a very strong dance move and singing live so I'm not gonna harp too much on that. All the three other girls were very shaky vocally the entire performance. Ruowei lost her balance and had quite a few awkward looking dancing moves too. It could be nerves, because it doesn't seem like she is a terrible dancer just a few moments here and there she didn't quite pull off the choreography perfectly. I thought her expressions were very subtle for the most part, so that's something she could improve also. Xinwei sounded like the weakest vocal of the 4. Very raw, off pitch. I would say she is at the same level as Yeseo vocals wise. She did a good job dancing but she looked worried after the intro. Xingqiao was a bit of a disappointment. Even if you say the key was too high for her or that she should be more of a lead vocal than main vocal she was still very unstable even in the non ad-lib parts. Her dancing was a little stiff at parts, but nothing a few months of training can't clean up. She did a decent job with her expressions despite not singing well, which is a plus, but still could be a bit more pronounced than it was. Visually alone they already look like a girl group. 4 very pretty kids, but performance wise 3 of them still need some work.
The Crystal Girls performance had a very similar vibe. Yurina did a good job with the dance and the vocals while everyone else was shaky. I think she did a better job with her expressions compared to Xiaoting but not by much. She has a nice clear tone and did well with her parts. Looks like the PD likes her and at least a few Korean netizens, so for now she is one of the front runners of the J-group imo. I agree with the trainers' take on Ririka. Her lower body didn't look right during the dance. I think she did a decent job with her expressions, but her vocals leave a lot to be desired. She did a better job with the high note than I was expecting but the lead up to it was very unstable. I don't think she ever had proper vocal training until the Nizi Project training camp and I don't know how much she had with Orange Latte so we'll see how much she can improve during this show. Yume did a great job with the dance and had a bright expression throughout. She started well with her vocals but her second lines onwards were very shaky. Wouldn't say she is a lead vocal but she can be a pretty decent sub-vocal if she cleans it up. Hana did a decent job dancing, seemed like she had a feel for singing but she went off key too much. With some training she could be a pretty decent vocal. Really needs to work on her expressions though. She was virtually expressionless. Yuna sounded like the most raw vocally of the group. Wouldn't say quite as bad as Yeseo and Xinwei but close. Her dance was also bit more rough. She did a better job with her expressions than Hana, but a few were awkward and sometimes it looked like she was worrying about her performance. The Rumor stage was basically a Xiaoting showcase and this was basically a Yurina one. I feel bad for the other girls, but at least they didn't get the Chanmi treatment even though there definitely were opportunities for it.
I wonder if the Mallang Kontteok girls decided to perform Black Mamba themselves or if the production crew asked them to. I wouldn't be surprised with either, but in the former case I would imagine the show mentions 2 of them are former SM trainees. I continue to be pleased with Jeongmin's vocals. She has a very nice clear tone with some more advanced techniques. She also did a pretty good job dancing. So far she seems like a pretty good performer and I look forward to her future stages. I agree with what the trainers said about Chaehyun, she was doing fine but once her voice cracked her performance got a little sloppy. It's tough and I feel for the girl, but you gotta maintain composure after a mistake. She has a nice voice too, but I didn't feel like she was as polished as Jeongmin in this performance. I don't think Yunji did a bad job singing but her voice seems more limited. Doesn't feel like she has a lot of range to it. She does her job well within that range but I don't know if she can expand it and become more than a sub-vocal. She did a good job with the dance and had pretty good expressions. This group did well, it could have been better but I think they are all good performers. One mistake kind of derailed Chaehyun and they have their limitations, but their performance was nice.
Hot Sauce performance of Kick It was interesting. Youngeun definitely nailed the stage. Right energy, great expressions, her dance moves were on point and she did well in the rap parts. I'm left to wonder though how will she fare in different concepts though. She did already showed she can do strong and fierce concepts but I thought her energy didn't match the signal song and her moves were over the top. She had great expressions so I'm sure she can pull those off on more girlish or feminine songs but I'm curious if she is gonna be able to control her power and about her singing ability. I'm not a huge "obligatory rap section" in K-pop guy so I would like to know how well can she sing. Jia played a good second fiddle. She wasn't as powerful as Youngeun or had the same stage presence, but she did a good job with the dance and had good expressions herself. Didn't quite fit the song as perfectly but was good. She had a little trouble with her breathing in the middle of the stage, but overall did well singing.
I disagree with the trainers on their take on the December Girl performance of Dumdi Dumdi. I'm rooting for Mashiro but I didn't think the performance was too impressive. She danced and sang well, but was a bit too airy and a little shaky a couple times. I think song selection is huge in audition shows and maybe this choreo just isn't great to showcase dance ability. Not too familiar with the original to say that with certainty. Her dance was fine, no big mistakes but also nothing that blew me away. Maybe a bit too safe of a performance. Her expressions weren't great to me. She ranged from expressionless to a very faint smile. I think she did a way better job on her signal song solo cam. Nagomi has a pretty nice sounding voice. She was shaky singing but with some training she can be a pretty nice lead vocal at least. She did a good job with the dance, but again nothing impressive. Did a better job with her expressions here than her signal song.
I also don't see eye-to-eye with the trainers about Shooting Star performance of Pop/Stars. I do agree Suyeon had good stage presence and great expressions, but she was very shaky vocally at the start. Kim Dayeon rap was kind of awkward, but outside of that I thought she had pretty good stage presence herself, and although Yeyoung's stage presence and expressions were lacking I think she did a good job dancing and her singing was very good, might even be main vocal level. If you add up all three had good performances with a few faults here and there. Depending on the level of competition I would either put all three on candidates for top 9 or none because they had very similar levels of performance imo.
Hikaru did a great job with the Burn Crush performance, but she is another girl I wonder how she will do with a not fierce concept. I thought she danced very well on her signal song performance but couldn't bring the same expressions she did in this concept. Also they treated this group like the Xiaoting and Yurina group and I don't think it is the same case. With those two one girl did well while everyone else struggled while this group everyone did well and the other girls didn't really deserve being treated as backup dancers by the editing team. I think Shana had a pretty nice voice. Not perfect but very pleasing and with more training would be a good lead vocal level. Her dance is a little behind the other girls, but not bad. I think both Rei and Kotone did a good job with their raps, danced very well and also nailed the energy and expressions of the stage. Very strong performance from everyone.
I've already talked about the Monster Baby performance in a previous post, but it's impressive they actually did this well with so many girls missing so much practice. Makes me very hopeful what these girls can do with more training. Specially Sein. If she can make her dance more crisp and energetic and work on her expressions she can really shine with her vocals.
The twins felt more like a comedy duo than a K-pop performance. They really are memelords. The song they chose really didn't let us see their dance skills. From their signal song cams I felt Qiao was a better dancer, but we'll have to wait till next performance to gauge. The vocals were very raw. We'll see how they both do after more training but at least I'm sure they got a few fans with their silliness.
The Strong Sisters group kind of confirmed a few of my suspicions about the whole preview drama. It's another performance it would be very interesting knowing if the girls chose the song or if the production asked for it. It's not like CLC is a super well known group or the song. Seems kind of out of left field someone would perform it when Yujin is on the show. Yaning clearly had a concept in mind that she was pushing, which I appreciate her for having more professional view on performances than just singing and dancing which most trainees have. But the script clearly was pushing for that "confrontation" with all the questions about the song, about knowing Yujin was competing, and eventually straight up asking her to say something to Yujin, which you can tell she hesitates to deliver the line but does so at the end. As I said before I don't mind what she said, maybe it wasn't quite the vibe the show usually goes for but it isn't a horrible thing, but having the clear signs this was scripted just makes me feel bad cause Mnet clearly just served her on a plate for the social media vitriol.
Anyhow it's a shame because I felt she did a great job this performance. I wasn't too impressed with her signal song, so this might be another case of a girl that can do fierce but can't do lovely. Chiayi is another girl that continues to impress me. Good dancer, good singer and great stage presence. She also did a great job this performance and I was already impressed with her signal song dance. Can't wait to see what she does next mission. Cai Bing has very charming eyes, but I don't quite agree with the trainers. She danced well but I wasn't impressed with her rap and her expressions. I felt bad for Wenzhe because she clearly has no business being a main vocal. I wonder how that ended up like that. She danced ok, a few stiff moves here and there, but nothing too horrible. Chang Ching clearly struggled with her vocals but she doesn't sound as bad as some of the other girls that have had vocal problems. She danced pretty well but could do a better job with her expressions. This is another group they only really focused on one girl. We'll see if Chiayi manages to grab some attention for her performance despite being virtually ignored.
I hope they release all the performances on youtube eventually like they did for the produce series.

This first performance is like the audition part to grade the girls the produce series had. Since they are trying to stay away from the rigging scandal they aren't making the girls perform with the trainees in their company but rather made up random teams within the C, K and J groups. MY guess is the production team decided who would perform with whom or alone based on what was best for the views. Could also be the trainers decided or the girls themselves but we don't have info on that. Maybe they show it in a behind the scenes later or a small snippet on next episode but I wouldn't hold my breath for it.I don't understand the format of the show. Why do the groups have different number of people, and some performed solo?
Anyway the girls did another Tiktok thing with trios of C, K and J. Not sure if it's just a random grouping or spoiler for future cells, but it's at least the girls being silly if you'd be interested in that.

Hi so I ended up watching the first episode and I like the show a lot... what can I say Sunmi and Tiffany and the various current idols competing draw me in, not to mention WJSN songs being covered lmao. Anyways I was impressed with a lot of the k and J trainees and a few C tho vocally not as much. Waiting to see next episode for the CheBull girls I want Bora to do well

Nice they released the performances. I wish the camera didn't move so much but at least is a no cut full body shot.
Moana danced well. Her vocals were a bit shaky, but singing live while dancing is tough so not gonna kill her for it. She has a nice voice and seemed to know how to sing. Just gotta work on that breathing to be more stable while dancing. She had good expressions but they weren't consistent. Pretty decent performance.
Oh weird that the Spring Girls performance uses different camera angles. Almost all of the girls had poor projection. The dance also isn't super challenging and the camera cuts made it difficult to fully judge their dancing. Risako was shaky singing but not horrible. Almost everyone was more audible after half the performance so I don't know if the girls actually started projecting their voices more or if they messed with the audio mixing. Her second line her singing voice sounded more pleasing but she became more shaky. Not sure if because I could hear her better or if she actually changed her singing. I thought she danced well with all the caveats and had good expressions. Kanno Miyu is super thin was the first thing I noticed. Her dance moves weren't as detailed or well done as they could have been and she lost her balance a few times. Not a horrible dancer but definitely not polished. She was the only girl whose projection remained low. Didn't have many lines. She sang ok, but I wanna see her singing louder and longer lines to properly evaluate her vocals. She had decent expressions but a few awkward ones, needs some work. Manami did a good job with the dance and had good expressions. Was a bit shaky with her first couple of lines but her second solo part she sounded a lot better. Showed a lot of promised with her vocals imo. If she can get to a point that her second part is how she performs the entire song she would be in a real good spot. Fuko also did well with the dance. Her expressions weren't quite as good. Her second singing part was also better than her first but still shaky. Also not horrible but she has a lot to work on vocally still. Miu had this worried look several times during her performance. Felt like she was very worried about the high notes. She was the only girl that had good projection from the start. A nice voice but couldn't quite reach the high notes. Doesn't seem like she can pull off main vocal parts but would be perfectly fine on a lead vocal role. Did a good job with the dance too. Not a super challenging song or an inspiring performance. The girls did well for their mostly amateurish experience, but you could still tell they are still very raw.
From the Energy Maknaes performance I thought Ayana shows a lot of promise. She danced well and had great expressions. Her vocals are what she needs to improve the most. She did a slightly better job than Ruan, but both are still very raw singers. Ruan's moves were a little less fluid and although she had a bright smile the entire performance she looked a bit more rigid.
I don't think the Violeta performance was so horrible they needed to cut it but I get why they did. Way too many performances had the same story of poor vocals and drumming up the same tune get boring. The first episode was already very long so I get why they moved past this stage, but don't think it was fair to just lump it with all the other skipped C-group performances as if they were all equally bad. The girls definitely struggled vocally, but I don't think they were a mess dancing. Xia Yan sounded the best. Definitely not a main vocal, and she couldn't reach the high notes, but when she sang in a range she was comfortable with she sounded good. Had a few breathing problems, but she had a nice singing voice. Danced pretty well. Had some good, some not so good expressions. Wenmeixiu sounded like the weakest vocal. Very raw and off-pitch. Her second part she did a little bit better but struggled again after that. I thought she had good expressions and danced well enough. Xinyu sounded a bit raw and started a bit shaky but wasn't horrible. She danced pretty well too. Had a pretty smile but I wish she changed her expression more. Zige sounded to me like the second best singing. had some breathing problems and ran out of breath during her line a couple times, but did a decent job with her parts. Probably had the fewest mistakes singing but a more limited voice compared to Xia Yan. Also danced well and had good expressions. Qiuru made a lot of mistakes singing, but that might be unfair because she got the second hardest role as far as vocals goes and maybe if she took one of the other roles she would have done better than the girls that performed them. I think she has a nice voice and can't sing but doesn't have much range. Dance well and had probably the best expressions on this group. I thought Luofei had the second weakest vocals in this group. Not as raw as some of the other girls but for someone who had easier lines she went off pitch too much and was shaky. She danced well but was expressionless too much specially when it wasn't her part. I think if we only look at the dance this team did well, but the mistakes singing and limited voices of some of the girls really held them back.
I do not envy the girls doing Twinkle in front of Tiffany. Talk about pressure. Having said that I thought the editing in the show tried really hard to make it sound like they bombed and I don't agree. Yale sang well. She did get a bit yelly twice, but overall wasn't too bad. She had good expressions but went blank a few too many times. My biggest issues was that even for what is a very simple dance she looked awkward and stiff. Shiqi also sang pretty well. Had a couple mistakes, but imo not the ones they showed. They tried to emphasize her more raspy part as a mistake and I don't agree. As someone that liked Big Mama Thorton I don't think that is a mistake or bad singing. It's a different vibe than the original song for sure, but I actually enjoyed the more bluesy feel it gives the song. She went off pitch a couple times but I don't think it was a train wreck. She definitely lost her balance a few times but I think it was more due to her heels than bad dancing. You can see they are too big for her feet. She had good stage presence and expressions. Yuling is the odd one out to me. She had the easiest lines but still didn't quite get them right. She doesn't stand out because she didn't make the big mistakes but she clearly is more limited than the other two. She did fine with the dance, but again not a very demanding choreography. Her expressions were really lacking to me. I don't think this was as bad as the show tried to make it seem. Yes the girls made mistakes but it was a decent performance even so and there is definite potential to tap in specially vocally with Shiqi and Yale.
S2 performing Dolphin was definitely pretty amateurish but I think there are redeeming qualities. I think Nancy had some dance moves she pulled off well but other times didn't have the right energy for the song. They are both very raw vocally. Szeching seemed slightly better but also had the big mistake during the song. Her dance was also a bit off. Not bad but this song is a bit tricky. It's a slower song but you shouldn't do the moves as slowly as they did. Their expressions were also frozen during most of the stage. Maybe a different more standard song would be better but maybe their skill level just wasn't good enough for a bigger challenge. Again this isn't a hard song but it's a tricky song.
The 0505 Maknae team was also a pretty rough performance. Chenhan is probably the weakest dancer of the show and her vocal wasn't too strong either. I was a big Sohye fan back in PD101, so I know quite well how hard it was for her and how much hate she got for being in the show. This is going to be a real tough test for Chenhan. She has a long way to go, a lot of work to put in and it's not gonna be easy. I think Yuhan can dance but loses the beat and over does moves to catch up. It isn't quite stiff but also not smooth. Her voice is also a bit raw, but not quite as bad as some other girls. She could be more expressive not quite a blank stare but a bit of a sheepish smile. They are both very young and in Chenhan's case probably never practiced dancing and singing so they have time to improve. Just not sure if the show is long enough for that.
Man Palette Girls is another case I wonder who chose the song. This is a real hard song to sing live. If the girls chose it I think they shot themselves in the foot. Shuyun looked awkward on several moves dancing and had a pretty raw voice. The expressions on this song are also quite hard because you have to have a self-assured look that isn't super easy to pull off and she looked more confused to me than confident. Cheukying did a pretty good job all things considered. Had a few moves that she couldn't transition into the next because of how active this song is, but she danced well. Had pretty good expressions. Her vocals were alright. Had some breathing issues in the middle during a pretty big dance move. Yiman had a hard time with the choreography. Her legs looked awkward several times. She seems to have a nice voice but went off pitch several times. She had a nice bright smile but also during times she shouldn't have. Wingchi was very shaky vocally. She danced well but went completely stone faced her last part when she cracked. I think the best dance was between Tammy and Cheukying. Tammy also did a good job but lost her balance a couple times. She only had one singing part that she lost her breath on, but before that she sounded decent. She had nice expressions but that could be improved. This is a real tough song that I think very few girls can do live without losing their breath even 7 year veterans. Too many mistakes to call it a good performance.
I feel like this show is more dance heavy than vocal heavy talent wise. Maybe it's just a misjudgment but I think there were fewer girls I though can't dance at all compared to Produce series but more girls I thought have a real hard time singing. I counted 60 girls we've seen perform not counting Yujin. We still have 39 to go so we'll see if that changes.
The Burn Crush performance is trending #1 on Japanese youtube. The ratings were low but considering the show aired on Youtube, IQ and Abema tv that isn't necessarily the complete representation of how many people watched and are interested. It's a bit concerning because again if the show doesn't do well in Korea it's hard for the final group to do well, no matter how much international support they get.

So 45 of them will be eliminated at first ? That's like almost half of them. Looks like they aren't waiting longer to get rid of contestants who aren't popular, who aren't fit, etc. So they could focus on the remaining ones.

If they're going to eliminate so many after round 1 voting, why even have 99 contestants in the first placeSo 45 of them will be eliminated at first ? That's like almost half of them. Looks like they aren't waiting longer to get rid of contestants who aren't popular, who aren't fit, etc. So they could focus on the remaining ones.
