Round 4
During Breakfast the next day, Poirot noticed that both Mr. Mitchell and Mrs. Conrwell were missing. However Mr. Edmund joined them. He looked terrible. Poirot wished to question him but he left soon after eating a few bites of food, saying that he wasn’t feeling too well. On the other hand, Mr. David and Ms. Williams seemed to be keeping each other company throughout breakfast. Poirnot noticed her rubbing circles on his palms. And couldn’t help but wonder how close they really were and why he seemed so upset. More significantly upset than even Isabella’s childhood friend. After breakfast ended and because he could find neither Mr. Bassett nor Ms. Williams who left the dining room before he could talk to them, he went in search of the gardener.
He found the young man helping the servants carry supplies to the kitchen.
“Good Morning Sir, How can I help you?”
“Tell me what is your good name young man.”
“Gary” The man smiled.
“I saw you around yesterday. Do you stay in the house?”
The man shook his head.
“No I do not. But due to the blizzard, Mr. Edmund requested I stay here until the weather improves.”
“Oh, so where do you live usually?” Poirot asked.
“There is a cottage in the perimetres of the estate. I stay there.”
Poirot nodded in understanding. “How long have you worked here?”
The young man looked bashful as he replied, “Well I worked since I was about Eight. But I have lived here all my life. My family has served the Hollows for decades.”
“So you and Mr. Edmund must be quite close for him to request you to stay in the mansion?”
The question seemed to take him by surprise but he quickly answered with a dashing smile. “As close as an employer and an employee can get. He is a good man. He cares about everyone here.”
Poirot couldn’t exactly pinpoint what struck him as odd. Was it the answer that seemed like it had been practised multiple times or was it the way he seemed surprised by the question. Or was it the answer itself. As close as an employer and an employee can get. It seemed odd the way it was phrased. They couldn’t be just an employer and an employee.
“Is there any way i can help you sir?”
Poirot snapped out of his thoughts and smiled wide.
“Yes, actually there was something else I wanted to ask. You see I am trying to maintain a garden on my own and I have these snails that try to eat my cabbages all the time. I was wondering what kind of pesticide would be perfect to help get rid of them.”
Gary laughed. And poirot had to note that it was indeed an attractive boyish laugh.
“Well here I use arsenic to help get rid of the pests.”
“Oh is Arsenic good?” Poirsot asked feigning ignorance.
“It is brilliant. Gets the job done fast but of course you need to be careful as it is poisonous.”
“Of course. Of course.” Poirot agreed before asking, “Tell me where should Arsenic be kept. Do you just keep them in the garden?”
“Of course not,” Gary said, “You should keep it away from people. Here we keep it in the basement. Behind the boxes of coal. No one goes there except me and the maids.”
“Right… Who else knows that the arsenic is there in the basement?”
“Well everyone in the family knows.”
“Of course.” Poirot thanked the gardener before making his way upstairs.
He knocked on Mr. Mitchell’s door and upon being asked to come in, he walked inside.
“How are you feeling now?” he asked the young man.
He looked horrible. He had dark circle and he looked ill.
“I feel awful.”
“Is it because of the death of young Ms. Hollow?”
Roger looked at him, tired and forlorn before nodding.
“Did you know her well?” Poirot asked as he took a seat next to the bed.
It was silent for a few minutes. Poirot could swear he heard the clock tick. And then the man spoke.
“We met a few times when i would come here to help her father. She was kind, funny… she always had a smile on her face. And she never cared that I was a clerk. She was so brilliant. She wasn’t perfect Mr. Poirot, she was impulsive and stubborn. But she was perfect for me.”
He twiddled his fingers as he became silent again.
After a few minutes of silence, he continued.
“We loved each other. I wanted her to be my wife. I knew it was futile. Her family would never say yes. But… love is not something you choose. It happens. I didn’t choose to fall in love with her. She didn’t choose to fall in love with me. We just fell in love. I don’t even know when it happened. It just did.”
Poirot looked at the young man and then said softly.
“What happened yesterday?”
Roger sighed.
“Mr. Hollow said No. He said he gave it thought but I wasn’t suitable for Isabella and I never will be. Isabella was furious. She tried to convince her father but it didn’t work. He asked to leave the lounge. So we did. She told me that she will try again. And she promised saying she will not give up on her love for me. Even if it takes years. She will be my wife. No one could…” He wiped away a tear as he clutched his fingers, “ stop us from being with another”.
He turned to look at Poirot.
“Isabella would never commit suicide. She promised me. Why would someone who is willing to fight her parents and fight her future throw it away?”
He reached out and clutched Poirot’s hands. “Someone killed her. Someone murdered my Isabella….” His eyes turned dark with rage.
“And they are lying about it. You are a detective aren’t you? You have solved so many crimes. Please solve this one too,” he pleaded. “Solve it before the police arrive. I don’t know who did it. But Knowing who else is here and how wealthy they are. They could just pay the police and keep it looking like a suicide when it is not. They murdered her. They need to pay for that. You can’t let them get away!”

Poirot came down from Roger’s room.
“I promise, I will do all I can to solve this murder. I will find Isabella’s killer. Trust me.”
He gave a word that he intended to keep.
“Where is the Maid who found Isabella?” He asked the housekeeper.
“She is resting in her room. The poor girl is still quite sick. I am glad her sister is there with us. Having family around at this trying time is a must..”
“Her sister?” Poirot asked.
“Oh yes. Margaret. She is a scullery maid. She used to work for the Bassetts but came here a few months ago.”
“She used to work for the Bassetts?”
“Oh yes.”
“And why did she leave them?”
The housekeeper shook her head, “I am not sure, Sir.”

Should Hercule Poirot…
a. Go to meet Margaret.
b. Go talk to Daisy Bassett.
c. Go to meet the Maid who found Isabella’s body.
