Round 5
Hercule Poirot headed upstairs to meet Mr.Edmund Hollow. He found him out on the balcony. The Blizzard had let up over the course of the day and though the evening was dark, There was no longer any snow falling down.
“It is a peaceful night isn’t it?” He asked.
The man turned back. He seemed tired. Like there was a heavy burden on his shoulders.
“Yes, it is a peaceful night. But only the night seems peaceful.”
“I am sorry for your loss.”
He smiled in acknowledgment of the sympathy but the smile didn’t reach his eyes. He continued to look out at the garden silently. Minutes ticked by before he spoke again.
“The pond is over there.” He said pointing towards the eastern side of the garden.
“I don’t know why but I… when I look there I feel like she is still there. Yesterday i even dreamed i saw her there. I ran to her but I couldn’t reach her no matter how much I tried. Every step i took didn’t matter. She stayed far away from me. And then i woke up. All alone.”
His lips quivered. “Have you lost anyone, Monsieur Poirot?”
Poirot thought back to the photograph of the girl he kept by his side.
“Yes.”
Edmund sighed.
“It hurts.”
“I know it hurts, my boy. And it will hurt. But you will make peace with it one day.”
Edmund didn’t respond. He continued to look silently towards the pond.
Poirot wondered if he should ask and eventually he did.
“I wish to ask you something and I know i am not in any place to ask you. However what you tell will be in the strictest confidence. You have my word. Is it alright if i ask you the question?”
Edmund smiled. “You have known me for a long time Monsieur and you have my trust. Go ahead.”
“You and the gardener gary. What is your relationship?”
Edmund looked taken aback.
“Why do you ask?”
“Asking the gardener to stay in the mansion when the blizzard began, eventhough he could have safely reached his cottage before it could do any harm…” Poirot looked curiously at Edmund, “It is not a sign of a relationship between an employee and employer. He also seemed quite well dressed for a gardener I should say.”
“We are friends.”
“Are you sure, because when i asked the gardener and i quote he said, As close as an employer and an employee can get. It seems like quite an odd way to say you are friends.”
Edmund laughed. And then looked at Poirot. He seemed to be carefully thinking of what to say before he finally spoke.
“You are right. We are not friends.” He smiled as if he was challenging Poirot, “We are lovers. Tell me Monsieur, does that trouble you?”
Poirot shook his head. “Love is love. It does not trouble me at all. But something else does.”
That caught Edmund’s interest.
“And what is that?”
“Isabella came to you yesterday. To tell you something. You might have been the last person who saw her alive. So tell me what happened.”
Edmund for the first time in the entire conversation frowned. “How do you know?”
“I am a detective, you can’t hide anything from me.”
Edmund looked away. His frown deepening. Poirot looked at the Pond. It wasn’t too clear but he could kind of tell where it was. It was like a dark patch of nothing against the snow and the bushes.
He quietly asked, “Did she find you and Gary together? Did you kill her to ensure her silence? Did he kill her to ensure her silence?”
Edmund turned poirot around and grabbed him by his collar. “I would never hurt my sister. How dare you?”
“So she did find you two together.”
Edmund let go of the collar and moved back.
“When the roads become clear, I want you to leave this house and never come back. You are not welcome here anymore.” He glared at Poirot and then walked back into the house.
Poirot straightened his collar and walked to the lounge.
When he walked in, he noticed Mrs. Cornwell sitting on a Divan. A glass of scotch in her hands.
“Long day?” He asked as he poured himself a drink.
“Very much so.” She replied.
“How are you coping?”
She twirled the edges of her green dress and smiled as she tilted her glass. “Scotch.”

Should Hercule poirot…
a. Ask how her day had been?
b. Ask her if she wants to talk?
c. Stay silent and wait for her to speak?
d. Ask her if she cared for her sister?
