Round 6
The next day, they had been informed that the police still couldn’t reach the property but were trying their best. The blizzard had stopped but the road was in terrible condition.
Hercule Poirot quietly looked at everyone around him. There was a murderer here amongst them. Once the police reach the home, it may become difficult to get information. When everyone is still thinking it is a suicide, it is easier to get the information as they are less guarded. If the murderer thinks they are getting away, they will be less careful and more likely to make mistakes. He observed David Bassett coming out of the library and went up to speak to him.
“How are you doing today?”
“To be honest, monsieur Poirot, I am feeling a bit better.”
Poirot smiled. “I am glad.”
“You must miss her?”
David nodded. “Of course.”
“I am just curious really but what were you doing on Saturday night?”
David looked at Poirot surprised before quickly answering, “I played bridge with Edmund and a few guests after dinner and then headed to bed at about a quarter past nine.I was really tired and it was quite cold. There is nothing better than a warm bed after a cold, tiring day.”
Poirot agreed to the sentiment.
“What did you do after Dinner on a Saturday Night?” David asked.
Poirot laughed, “I went to bed just like you did.”
Poirot tried to ask david more questions but was interrupted by some guests who wished to talk to him. Realizing that he possibly couldn’t question him about the murder anymore. He excused himself and went to meet Mrs. Hollow.
He found Mrs. Hollow in the Parlour. She was by herself holding a photograph.
Poirot looked at the photograph and saw a young child with black hair wearing a petticoat. She had a wide cheerful smile as she looked at the camera.
“Is that Isabella?” he asked.
Mrs. Hollow looked up in surprise and then smiled gently when she realized it was Hercule Poirot.
“Yes,” she replied as she touched the photograph softly.
“Mrs. Hollow-”
“Call me Rosamund Monsieur.”
“Rosamund,” he said gently, “why were you so adamant on saying no to your daughter’s relationship with Roger Mitchell.”
She stared at him, “How do you know about her and roger?”
“Your husband told me.”
She sighed. And then looked back at the photograph she was holding.
“We are a wealthy family, Monsieur Poirot. Our family has a reputation in the society. Her marrying a clerk would not look good at all. She was taught by the finest governesses in the Country. She could speak 3 languages. She had so much to offer to the world. She couldn’t marry a mere clerk.”
He looked at Rosamund in silence. She looked beautiful. Nothing like how she looked yesterday. Her face showed grief though. And grief was good. It meant she was upset. And any mother who loses a child will be upset.
“Did you meet Isabel on Saturday night?”
“Yes. Me and my husband we spoke to her in the lounge and told her that we don’t accept her relationship with the clerk. If we had known what she would do...” She wiped away a tear before touching the photograph again.
“What about after that?”
She shook her head. “No. I didn’t meet her. I wish I did.”
Poirot frowned. He stood up to go look out of the Window and noticed Ms. Williams in the garden looking at Roses.

Should Hercule Poirot…
a. Ask her if she ever met the butler in the night?
b. Go down and speak to Ms. Williams.
c. Ask her about her son who died in the War.
d. Go and speak to Mr. Hallow.
