[3rd Generation BiS Vol.4] Can the negative loner, Neo Trees, become “cool” through BiS!?

bis_neo_a.jpg

This series, “Is It Really Possible To Have a Third Term of BiS!?” will document the third generation of BiS. The 4th in our series of individual interviews is with Neo Trees! Why would a girl who says things like, “I’m not interested in people” and “If possible, I don’t want to get involved” want to join a group, in a world that is the exact opposite of her statements?

She still has another 4,000 Twitter followers to go until her bare face can be revealed, but the album will be released in almost one month’s time! Will it be possible to release her bare face before the release!? The expectations for the third term of BiS are only growing, with new songs being released one after another - “1,2,3,!!!” and “this is not a love song”. These girls are pushing forwards, so don’t get left behind!

INTERVIEW NEO TREES

Interviewer: Iida Jinichiro
Author: Minakami Kenta

I DON’T KNOW WHY I PASSED THE AUDITION

- Do you like your name, Neo Trees? How would you rate it out of, let’s say, 100?

Neo Trees (henceforth known as Neo):
If it’s out of 100… well, 100 I guess.

- Isn’t that a lie? (Laughs)

Neo:
Maybe, I don’t think I’d like any name, no matter what it is… I don’t really have emotions, so it’s nothing against the name itself.

- I see. So, why did you want to join BiS, Neo?

Neo:
I never really listened to music that deeply, I just listened to a little bit of everything passively. I never actually wanted to get involved with music, but there was always a small corner of brain that wanted to sing… So then, I asked myself, “Do I want to be a solo artist?” or “Is there a group I want to be in?” Even though I asked myself these questions, the answer still didn’t emerge… At any rate, I just continued on with no self confidence, but it gets to a point where you’re standing at a crossroads and have to decide your course, otherwise I’d be going down a path I don’t really want to be on.

- How was the BiS audition?

Neo:
The audition itself was actually my first ever interview, so I wasn’t prepared at all… I didn’t know what they wanted to hear, and I didn’t even realise it was an interview until I got there and was like, “Oh, this is an interview”, so I really couldn’t say anything.

- After all, it was a BiS audition, there must of been lots going on around you?

Neo:
It was too crazy… There was so much chattering. When we were all asked, “What would you do if you join BiS?” everyone was able to say so much, but I seriously couldn’t say a single word.

- Did you not have a reason to go to the audition?

Neo:
I don’t know.

- Were there any moments during the audition where you really stood out?

Neo:
No… Actually, I just remembered, no else around me would touch their blank audition forms, I was the only one who wrote out mine, using the book I brought with.

FIRSTLY, I SHOW NO INTEREST IN PEOPLE

- What book did you use to write on as the blank audition form?

Neo:
“Zekka” by Boy A.

- Why did you write on “Zekka”?

Neo:
I often look into and read about incidents that occur in the world. This book “Zekka” is by the perpetrator of the Kobe child murders that happened in 1997, and he writes about the series of events leading up to the crimes. Out of all the ones I’ve looked into, this one left a lasting impression on me.

- I see. How was the final interview?

Neo:
I didn’t talk at all during the last interview either. I literally had nothing else to talk about other than part-time jobs.

- Why do you think you passed the audition then? (Laughs)

Neo:
Don’t ask me. (Laughs) In the interview Watanabe did with OTOTOY he was asked, “What kind of girls do you want for this rendition of BiS?” and he said “I put emphasis on girls who can talk properly”. I really put my foot in it saying “I can’t talk”.

- Is there anything you’re especially good at?

Neo:
Nothing at all.

- Did your parents say anything in regards to BiS?

Neo:
I don’t really talk to my parents that much. So I don’t really know what they think.

- Neo, you’re pretty negative, aren’t you?

Neo:
I think I’m negative.

- I thought as much. Or at the very least, not positive. Is that something you’ve thought about changing?

Neo:
I’ve thought about it, but I think it’s impossible with my personality.

- What is your personality like, Neo?

Neo:
It’s really bad.

- How so?

Neo:
Firstly, I show no interest in people.

- You’re not interested in people at all?

Neo:
It’s not like I don’t have a reason to not be…

- But you’re interested in Boy A, for example.

Neo:
I am interested in that, but I mean more like I didn’t have any interest in talking to anyone at school.

- Did you spend all your time at high school alone?

Neo:
At lunchtime people would always invite me to join them, like, “Let’s eat together”, but I refused them everytime, saying, “I’m fine” and ate my meal alone.

I NEVER IMAGINED THAT I COULD STAND AT MAKUHARI MESSE…. BUT I WANT TO STAND ON STAGE THERE

- BiS is a group, so will you be OK?

Neo:
I did think to myself, “What am I doing?” when I passed.

- Are you going to be OK with your activities from here on out?

Neo:
I was diligent in my activities, during school clubs and such, so I know that cooperation is key. And it was never necessary to spend all my time at school. If I just keep living normally in my private life, then I won’t have to worry about anything else going on around me.

- But in BiS, there will be times when you’re on a nationwide tour in a single car, all 5 members and manager.

Neo:
I’ll do best with that. Again, it’s like with school, I just wonder what sort of things I’ll get involved in…

- Are you the type of person that can’t move forward without some merit or purpose?

Neo:
Probably.

- Is there a girl you like, or someone you look up to?

Neo:
I can’t think of one.

- Do you not have an idol that you admired, which led you to want to become one?

Neo:
Hm. Well, you say idol, but I just wanted to join the group called WACK… Maybe I don’t think of WACK groups as idols. I don’t really know the definition of idol. Are you an idol if you just sing and dance?

- What is it that you like about WACK?

Neo:
WACK is full of loads of cool groups.

- What’s the difference between them and other groups?

Neo:
They’re just cool.

- So you want to be a cool artist. As your activities continue, could you ever imagine yourself standing on stage at Makuhari Messe?

Neo:
I never imagined it… But I’d want to stand there.

- So you have those feelings.

Neo:
I want to sell. I need money too…

- You want to sell and earn a lot because you like money?

Neo:
It’s not that I like money or anything, but I want to sell… I want everyone to know of us.

- What do you want people to know?

Neo:
Teebu’s voice is really erotic. No one in WACK right now has a voice like her, so that’s great, right? Toggy as well, she has a face like a baby that’s grown to adulthood, and her voice sounds exactly like you’d expect it to. Mon is really strong and can vary her voice. Manako can sound really cool when she sings, but her normal voice is so cute, so she can sing cutely too.

- So, what about you, Neo?

Neo:
I can’t sing cutely at all, I just sing using my normal voice. Everyone’s different.

- How is your relationship with them?

Neo:
I think the relationship is good.

- What kind of group do you think BiS will become?

Neo:
I think we’re interesting because our voices and personalities are all completely different. I feel like we’re going to be completely different compared to the first and second generations of BiS. Everyone is able to cooperate well, no one is trying to rush ahead, and I think everyone takes each other into consideration.

- So, you want to change the world?

Neo:
Change the world… When you say it like that, I feel like changing it. Nothing has fully started and I haven't really thought about this sort of thing yet. I think I’d like it if there was someone as interested in me as I am in BiS, and I mean that in a good way.

It's been a while, so I decided to create a poll. I think I got every release so far this year. I'm really only including songs/singles that also had an MV to keep it simple. The MV for GP's "Last" was uploaded on Dec. 31st, so I decided to make an exception for it. Let me know if I missed any MVs.

My copy of Carrots and Sticks arrived today. It turns out there's new songs after all. Whenever I looked up the track list, all that was listed were the 8 songs from the Carrots and Sticks EPs, the remixed singles, and Distance. There's 5 additional songs on the main album, so they followed through with their original promise of "additional/new songs" from the promo movie that was released back in March.

So Toriaez is going into acting. Dear Stage has been around for a while, so it's not a bad company to join.

If Kika is opening a bar, that's the perfect place to hold some impromptu reunion performances.

AyaPri seems to be the only one who still wants to sing, but I haven't checked her twitter recently to see if she found a company or not. All I know is that she's been posing for a photographer and taking singing lessons.

[3rd Generation BiS Vol.5] Honor student and girl of subculture, Manako Chiii Manako, chose BiS in order to make her existence special!

bis_manako01.jpg

This series, “Is It Really Possible To Have a Third Term of BiS!?” will document the third generation of BiS. The 4th in our series of individual interviews is with Manako Chiii Manako. While continuing her life as an honor student, a part of her always “wanted to be someone” and this has come forth in the form of “a member of BiS”! So we’re delivering to you her strong-willed determination!

And so, the third generation of BiS has announced their first one-man live, “THiS is BiS”, held on August 18 (Sunday)! But this time, to get tickets to the show, you have to apply via telephone, where the members themselves will be answering the phone. As always, BiS’s activities are pretty unpredictable. Once you realize what’s going on, you worry about it’s fate… But, doesn’t that mean that BiS has already captured your heart? I wonder what kind of things we are to see during this summer’s one-man show, I just can’t wait to find out!

INTERVIEW MANAKO CHIII MANAKO

This is our 4th solo member interview in our series with the third generation of BiS. This time it’s with a seemingly serious girl with a love of subculture. There was only one thing burning inside her, her desire to be in BiS. This girl took this chance to become someone. But has she been given the wings to fly to heaven, or has she been lured by the light, straight to hell? Whichever it is, the third term of BiS is really full of individuality, so it makes for such a fun interview.

Interviewer: Iida Jinichiro
Author: Minakami Kenta

I CAN LUCID DREAM

- Manako Chiii Manako, I’ve heard that you have a very special skill.

Manako Chiii Manako (henceforth known as Manako):
Yes, I can lucid dream. So when I’m dreaming I’m aware that “it’s a dream”. Once I realize I’m in a dream, I become self-conscious and can then control the dream to be what I want.

- What is the best dream you’ve managed to create for yourself?

Manako:
From a young age, I would have nightmares where I’m being chased by something. I would always have this same dream, where I’m being chased by a Native American. It was so scary, I always felt so panicked while running away, but then, this time, I went into an underground carpark and found a single car. When I jumped into it, I realized that I was in a dream as I thought, “I don’t have a license, but I just have to drive and get away!” so I escaped in the car. Then, just as I thought, “thank god.. It’s over”, I was somehow in the back seat… And the person driving was an old lady who called herself the Designer of Dreams.

- The Designer of Dreams?

Manako:
All I could see was this old lady through the rear view mirror, and she showed me what was coming next in the dream, like, “this is going to happen next, so you better do this”. She suggested what to do, saying, “At this rate, you’ll be sucked into this dream”. At this point, I was seriously scared. I just kept telling myself, “This is a dream, I can wake up” and somehow I managed to awake.

- I see… What kind of student life did you lead?

Manako:
I was your picture perfect honor student. It’s not something I’d usually say, but up until middle school I always had the best grades in the whole year. I was the class representative as well, so I guess you could say I was a so-called outstanding student.

- So you were relied on.

Manako:
I think I was relied on. But after that, I went on to a high school that’s known for being the smartest in the area, so naturally all the other children coming from other schools also ranked 1st and 2nd in terms of grades, so I think my academic ranking dropped down to 300th the second I got there…

- You really went to such an elite high school!?

Manako:
But while there, I entered the brass band, since I’d been doing it since middle school. As soon as I joined, there was practice every single day without fail, even on holidays, performing from morning to night, day in, day out…

- Was it that intense?

Manako:
Even though they weren’t that strong of a band, it was so strict… I was doing nothing but club activities every day, and to make things worse, I was surrounded by nothing but grade-A students. In the end, I wasn’t able to keep up with my studies… All my assignments were late, and I could tell the teachers didn’t really care for me, so I ended becoming a so-called non-achiever.

- Even though you were trying your absolute hardest, you fell on hard times.

Manako:
I did. And so I started feeling pretty gloomy about life. This may of been my attempt to escape from reality, but I always loved TV. It was like another world on the other side of the screen that I was always vaguely drawn to. But I’ve stopped thinking of it as world that’s just out of reach.

I WAS SO CONVINCED THAT I COULD BE SOMETHING SPECIAL.

- I get it. Before, in our previous interview, you said that you like subculture. How exactly did subculture reach you while living such a life, Manako?

Manako:
There was a time when I formed a cover band, specifically a Porno Graffiti cover band, I loved it so much. And so, the more I loved Porno Graffiti, the more I wanted to know about them.

- Like their musical roots and such.

Manako:
Exactly. I wanted to fully investigate all the music they like, how they’re influenced by BOOWY, how they like THE YELLOW MONKEYS, for example. Next I’d wonder what kind of person influenced THE YELLOW MONKEYS, so I’d dig deeper and deeper to find out all the people they’ve crossed paths with.

- So you’re a band girl. But I’m still not getting any feeling of subculture quite yet.

Manako:
While I was chasing after such music, there was an anime I was obsessed with called “K-On!” airing at the same time. The characters had names like ‘Hirasawa Yui’ and ‘Akiyama Mio’, which are all names very similar to all the members of P-MODEL, with just their first names being different. Also at the same time, I realized that the cool song used in the anime “Berserk” was by Hirasawa Susumu, so it almost felt like I was following him, always just a breath away. So from there I discovered people like Togawa Jun and the whole new wave genre, becoming addicted.

- So you got in that way!

Manako:
Other than that, I also really loved 90’s visual kei, so I dug deeper there too. By the time I was in middle school, I already loved subculture and visual kei, I think it really was that kind of teenage angst. I could study well, was the class representative, I knew all about subculture, things that no one else around me knew, I really thought I was different to everyone else. I was so convinced that I could be something special.

- I see. And from there, you fell on hard times during high school...

Manako:
Yeah. I thought, “If I just graduated from school as it is now, I can spend my days normally.” “Even though back then I thought I could become something, in the end, I’ll just waste my life away without doing anything.” I was empty.

- I can understand that.

Manako:
When I was investigating things, during the time of teenage angst, I started following the first generation of BiS. And I’ve been into all the WACK groups since then. But recently, seeing all the young’uns working towards their dreams, I can’t help but think they’re all shining so bright. I really hated thinking, “All these kids are working so hard to change their lives, can I really carry on wasting mine as I am, sleepwalking through life?” At the same time, it was announced that BiS would be disbanding and auditions for new members were open to “those who understand the activities of the first generation BiS” As soon as I saw that written there, I thought, “I have no choice but to apply!” and jumped into the audition.

NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS, I’LL BE A PART OF BiS

- How did the interview go?

Manako:
Fundamentally, I’m bad at speaking if it’s not just small talk. When I was asked, “Why did you choose this path over your normal life?” I got overwhelmed and couldn’t really give an answer. Because of that, I thought I wouldn’t pass. After that, I didn’t hear anything for a good week or two, so I thought that I’d definitely failed, but suddenly the notification that I’d passed came through. I was so happy, but I also still hadn’t told my parents that I even wanted to be an idol.

- So once you cleared the audition, you still had the challenge of persuading your parents.

Manako:
Up until then, I’d always lived with great care in regards to my parents. I studied so my parents couldn’t complain, I entered a smart school for the same reason. I was just always thinking of what would make my parents happy, I never once told them my true feelings before. And so, when I told my parents, “I’ve passed the audition for an idol group called BiS”, they were so shocked, they were completely dumbfounded.

- It must of took them by surprise.

Manako:
My dad watched the video where Watanabe’s was on Yoshida Go’s ‘Nekotoni SHOWROOM’ and said, “He’s sounds like he is doing things properly, but I can’t fully trust him” Regardless, though, he wished me to do my best. But it’s my mum who’s worrying the most. Thinking that I may be being deceived, or do something like the first generation of BiS did with the naked PV, wondering if her daughter will be forced to do a school swimsuit clad stage dive. I received a lengthy message from her, trying to persuade me against it, saying, “I’m worried about your life.” “I just don’t know why you like this group.” “Not to mention, I don’t even know what it means if you join”. But it was in that moment that I thought, “I can’t afford to give up now and live a normal life” “If I’m not a part of the third generation of BiS, I’ll live with regret, until the day I die”. When it came down to it, sink or swim, I sent my mum a message saying, “Dad has given me his acknowledgement, I am taking this contract of my own free will”. And from there, I changed tack and said, “So, let’s get going”

- In the end, didn’t your mum meet with Watanabe?

Manako:
She did.

- So, did she forgive you after that?

Manako:
After it happened, I called my mum again. I told her the honest truth. “After I got your messages, I thought ‘it’s my life, so why can’t I decide what I do with it?’ I felt so strongly about it, that if I couldn’t do it, I’d rather just die.” “No matter what you say, mum, I’m going to be a part of BiS” After I said that, she apologised, “I’m sorry for forcing you into a corner, to the point where you’d want to die”. So I think she now understands it just a little bit better.

- But, has she been able to break through those feelings of having no say?

Manako:
I think so. For some reason, parents really seem to think that you’re an idol as soon as you have Twitter, they keep contacting me so frequently.

- I really want to hurry up and see your face.

Manako:
That really is the biggest problem right now. But just how do you increase your follower count… It’s extra frustrating when you come up with ideas to get more but they don’t seem to work. After all, it’s not the process that matters, it’s the final result that’s important.

A while ago, some ex AKB48 members used the money they made to open a restaurant together. Since then, they've hired more former members, so it's an incentive for customers to keep coming. If Kika hired other former BiS members, it would be a great way to attract customers. They could build a small stage, and periodically perform songs. I bet it would do well.

Seeing the new members basically wearing the old BiS League uniforms is just wrong...So of course Watanbe would do it.

the tweet dissapeared since she deleted her account but there still are tweets of people talking of it

i don't think watanabe ever cared about BiS,

i would hope they don't perform the songs of BiS... but wack is not going to let that happen,

so at least they should drop the old uniforms,

but i do wonder, are they borrowing the uniforms because theirs aren't done yet? or are they keeping them a surprise?

but other than that, between the interviews and the new songs new BiS are growing on me
