StanExpansion to the west does not mean getting into the american public radar. It should be obvious from the Twicelight tour that Twice can have enough market share in existing kpop community in the west. So since 2 big groups, BTS and BP are both releasing something within these 2 weeks, Twice association with them could still bring in some publicity. YG did the same publicity stunt before. They kept on attaching BP's name with BTS when they were just starting to promote in the US. Only Onces will take the english version seriously if they decided to release it a couple of weeks from now instead. That is more useless imo.
Proof of what I am talking about? Multiple articles from US-based press were just released today. People are talking about not just bts today, but twice as well. The english version was not for snatching records but rather for marketing purposes.
I've seen a lot of "no to west expansion" today that it is just getting too ridiculous already imo. When are you guys going to realize that among the jype groups, Twice actually has been the least promoted outside Asia? Even itzy has already done US tv appearance. I dont know why are you all so paranoid. Its not like Twice are gonna promote there the same way they did in Japan.
Anyway, a studio album means full album noh? I hope there will be individual member covers like SNSD's the boys![]()
Articles by Forbes and MTV that write about Kpop a lot, especially Forbes? And who's talking about being on the American radar? That will never be something for Twice. If BTS were releasing or not those would be written.
i was always very pro Twice expanding (my earlier posts in the thread were all about that), but I've now realised JYPE can't manage that, and even attempting to do it a bit has cost them in both of their biggest markets. The company don't have the know how to make it work. Seeing how they've attempted it with Twice yet barely trying, I can see how they fucked it up with Wonder Girls. They haven't learnt anything.
JYPE is not the company to be in for this.
Difference between Twice and Itzy is they've come out with a sound that is meant to work for both. JYPE have clearly made choices on the music based on the western market, which will always being the biggest part for any group and have made mistakes. Least promoted outside Asia? Yes. Biggest change to their identity to try and work in the west more? Also yes.

Well in fairness Tamar is pretty much the number 1 writer for Kpop articles and about 90% of her stuff for Forbes is about BTS and BlackPink, I can't remember the last time(if ever) she wrote an article specifically about Twice.Articles by Forbes and MTV that write about Kpop a lot, especially Forbes? In March she mentioned them and used their image for a piece about Kpop concert cancellations due to covid, but that was about a lot of acts, the last time she had a picture or wrote about them was maybe in 2018.
So it's kind of a bigger piece than usual, most of the other Kpop stuff on Forbes is written by a guy called Hugh Mckintyre I think who pretty much writes fluff pieces and again most of his stuff is about BTS and BlackPink too so it's still good to get some articles and some form of promo out there imho.

Who's reading Forbes articles enough to differentiate between two different writers for it to matter? Genuine question.
I'm from the UK where Forbes isn't a thing but I have also never heard of it being that big in the US. All anyone knows it for is its rich list.

I forgot the term mainstream so I used the american radar instead. Like I said, by releasing at the same time with bts and Bp, they were able to expand the reach of their publicity because they are also targetting the bigger us kpop community comprising mainly of bts and bp fans. The release could even be targetted now to a wider audience like music exec, producer, basically the music community who are also taking note of bts movements.
Bottom line is, the release is not actually targeted to us fans no matter how they termed it as a "gift" lol.
They changed their sound primarily because they wanted to have NiziU. Remember how YG shelved 2ne1 in favor of BP? Long term strategy for the company is to give Twice previous image and sound to a new gg. So whether we like it or not, there is no hope to continue holding on with that "they shouldn't change" etc. JYPE's bigger interest is to the company, not to Twice unfortunately.
The environment during WG was vastly different to the current one. WG totally abandoned SK, and stayed in the US during their promotions. Do you honestly see the Twice girls going around the US, talking to tv shows, be an opening act in a concert, etc for an entire year? Coz that was how WG promoted there before if that was your main concern. Comparing WG's failure to the current predicament of Twice is too far fetched imo. WG's time had 2ne1 and SNSD. They didnt even really changed their previous sound when they promoted again in SK but still failed to secure back their top position.
Just think of it this way, nobody is stopping BP from promoting in japan despite their lacklustre performance in digital and physical sales there. But they still continue to do so because there is an existing concert going community in the country. Similarly, there is an existing kpop community in the west where Twice could still get a market share in future concert tours and even album sales.

Somewhat yes. Forbes is a site with about 5+ million monthly readers and as a media outlet they are growing in entertainment space rather than just finance, they have the rich list which is still their sort of big attraction, but the also have the 30 under 30 which are very popular too and a lot of people look out for those list too. So they are sort of relevant.Who's reading Forbes articles enough to differentiate between two different writers for it to matter? Genuine question.

So it's a little bit decent coverage and you know Tamar works with a lot of magazines and websites too so being on the radar means it's possible she continues to write about them in the future and regular readers might start seeing it and recognizing the name.
Remember this is how it was in like 2017 for BTS getting small media attention and articles and people were rolling them for caring and again in 2018 and early 2019 for BP getting media coverage little by little and again people laughed at them saying 'oh it's just an article that no one reads'...
But now both are consistent covered in multiple outlets for every comeback and it does build some casual interest.
So to be in a position where multiple websites are writing nice, positive articles hyping Twice up is only a good thing and who knows it might lead to regular media coverage in some of the US's biggest magazine websites which could and likely will help build up a casual interest in Twice from their readers.

Hmmmmm.......
So JYPE....wut.
But...these are just the exact same stage outfits they wore over a year ago at the Fact Music Awards in 2019....only they cut the sleeves off!
At this point why even bother complaining. Some people in that company are eating for free....get off your fat lazy arses and start earning your pay cheque. Is it really that hard for them to dress them in something new and fitting for a big TV opportunity? They'll be the first to wonder why Indonesia fans don't give a shit about Twice when they are putting 0 effort or care into things like this.

Most US fans are multi-stans. One of the reason M&M's English version probably didn't get very far is because they were all buying and concentrating on BTS's new song (and the roll-out was hardly there)
I most definitely know it was another half assed attempt by JYPE/Republic and not a gift, but until I see something tangible I fail to see the benefits of this release.
The much wider audience you talking about targeting is where Republic should come in. Not articles by kpop writers
I'm not saying Twice shouldn't evolve their sound, I'm a big proponent of that and I most definitely do not want them going back to cute. Trying to put out music with a specific market in mind when they don't know said market well at all though? Inevitably a disaster. I most definitely know for the company, Twice are coming up to 7 years and if even one doesn't renew this whole OT9 or nothing they push will pretty much put Twice on indefinite hiatus. So they need to think for the future and slowly move the money they get in from Twice elsewhere which is why we're in a managed decline stage. Even Itzy, who have a lot of fans that are also Twice fans, for every 3 Itzy album versions they buy finite resources means they might buy one less of Twice. Money still going to JYPE so they're obviously fine with it, but I still dislike the fact that Twice need to compete with their own label-mates on top of their peers when none of their competitors do. Even though I know why from a business perspective, especially at JYPE where they don't like re-investing at want the highest margin possible.
On WG, the underlying point was thinking west and damaging your home turf. The music we've had recently is directly correlated with the poor performance in SK, and is due to the company thinking west. Whether or not Twice fully committed like WG the outcome is moving in a similar direction. If BP's next release does well digitally and Twice struggle again I don't think you can argue against them in SK even thou there will always be inherent limitations to how people perceive that due to BP's/YG's promotional style.

Looking at her recent articles she's done some on Wonho, SSAK3, Lee Hi, Baekhyun, Momoland.
I'm not just purposefully trying to downplay everything, I just don't think much of it.
I enjoy that you guys have positive outlooks against my overtly negative ones though.

@NewUser Yeah she post about others, but as I said 90% of her stuff is just BTS and BP. Stuff like Wonho is understandable as he's a act that has debuted in the US and has some controversy around him so it's always good for clicks. Other things like MML make sense too since it's about them signing with an international distributor and Beakhyun was for making history with sales.
You expect those kind of things to be posted as one offs, but for Twice she, and other news outlets, are pretty much only posting to big up a new release and this is typically not something we see typically see from Forbes so it's a decent start, especially, as I said, if it leads into more and more articles from people like Tamar.
She writes for a bunch of big sites and if she get's some local interest on a piece about Twice smart money says keep writing about them and getting those clicks/interactions and suddenly other writers and sites take note of this and write stuff too only adding to their potential exposure and to be honest regardless of what you think that can only be a good thing.
It's not gonna set the world on fire sure, but if it helps drum up at least some local interest in Twice next activities I'm happy enough.

The outfit was worn for just 30sec in the vid greeting. I think there is no need to overanalyze it.

Jype's trying to push Twice in the west is good for the company in general, when other 3 big kpop companies are doing the same thing. Both SK and Itzy are still so young, they cant yet carry the banner of jype. Whatever lesson they are gonna get here will be definitely used for the benefit of niziu in the future. That group has like 2 english speakers, with one having a US citizenship even.
Twice is bound to lose a bit of their market share in sk, whether we like it or not. From my own perspective, pros outweigh the cons in their push for the new market. Like you said, they are a 5yr old gg already. It is ok to take that risk imo. Its pretty obvious that at this point, kpop is going to gear more towards the market in the west. Even SM is now rumored to be debuting a 4 member gg.
Speaking of itzy, they are now at 141k album sales in hanteo. 250k in Gaon before the year ends is definitely possible.

@trace I often agree with where you're coming from and you are spot on mosg of the time.
This I'm not with you on. The Cheer Up performance preview was released from them today and yes they are wearing those oitfits.
Those recycled fits are the ones they'll be performing in.
It's just once again more damning evidence that JYP isn't even trying anymore with Twice. This is probably Twices biggest opportunity they've been given in SEA, probably only behind the Bench endorsement, and JYP can't even be bothered to put in a little time and effort for new stage outfits for them?
It's the same thing weve been complaining about since 2019, low budget and low effort promotions.

It's TWICEs fifth year and we should already know exactly how JYPE operates. It's not only about being greedy or lazy, but more about being extremely rigid in descision-making. We all know how TWICE will be promoted, which teasers we'll have and in which order, what kind of shows they will most likely visit, who will film new MV, how many versions of physical album will be produced etc. etc.
And we know that JYPE most of the time create new outfits for new era and end-year awards, because TWICE basically do nothing in between comebacks except for touring. They simply don't even have such an option.
On the positive side - a very minor amount of viewers will recognize recycled outfits, plus I kinda like those. I mean it's better to have those outfits recycled rather than, for example, horrible golden something they wore for kohaku in 2017 (?).

I like those outfits too but the fact remains they were set up for a whole different stage, song and colour palette and it's already noticeably stand out-ish.It's TWICEs fifth year and we should already know exactly how JYPE operates. It's not only about being greedy or lazy, but more about being extremely rigid in descision-making. We all know how TWICE will be promoted, which teasers we'll have and in which order, what kind of shows they will most likely visit, who will film new MV, how many versions of physical album will be produced etc. etc.

Just look at the video I posted above. The outfits were chosen and design for Fact and matched the aesthetic of a darkly lit award show. Looking at fact we can see the stage most of the colours an lighting used throughout the show was darker blues and purples, with some gold and red tones too. Looking at the Yes or Yes stage even the contrasting colours used compliment the dark outfits as they aren't just blasting neon bright colours but the yellows, greens, etc are all muted so these outfits match that setting perfectly,
Now look at this video below.
You can see the glaring design issues from a mile away. The outfits do not match or compliment the set or lighting at all, which can be okay if you know what you're doing and you're purposeful using contrasting colours to make the performers pop but typically that works when the outfits are design for the set, in the case of these they aren't at all.
So they aren't even contrasting well, the bright background colours are still overpowering the performers and obviously who ever edited the video knew that so they dreadfully overexposed the whole thing to make the dark blue costumes lighter, which actually overall probably made the whole thing look way worse.
These issue could be simply avoided if JYPE had dressed them for the event, their first major gig on Indo Tv ever. Something that would have only cost the company a couple days work and a few thousand Dollars and actually produced a potentially good looking stage instead of this lazy mess that just doesn't look good at all. The sleeves cut off for Namosa are not even well tailored either.
Just look at BTS for example, no massive budget spent or huge extra mile gone, just well chosen outfits and the stages look great, the outfits are almost perfectly complimentary to the setting and most of the stuff they are wearing is just designer gear, likely sponsored so it probably didn't cost them anything.
Because unlike that moron company JYPE, Big Hit understand you only grow if you make an effort during promotions. This is Twice first major event in SEA since the Bench sponsorship and JYPE is making 0 effort for it.
And if one more person mentions other groups like Itzy and Niziu being his priority for global expansion I don't give a shit, 99% of Once don't give a shit....you want them to expand do it on their earnings not Twice's or it's just gonna make us stop buying shit if our money is going on other groups.

StanI wonder if the damage have already been done beyond recovery point for Twice. I hope some good things come out from this campaign but we know how important momentum is in Kpop. Twice already had few of them ruined. TT momentum was ruined by KK and Signal. Then Likey saved the day and its momentum lasted until DTNA (my favorite song, but didn't really bring any fandom growth sadly, tasteless hoes). Then Fancy brough biggest momentum internationally but I think it is already over. So next song have to create another momentum otherwise it is all down from there.

StanSeriously, why don't Jeongyeon just rest?? Is it just me or JYP trying to play the whole "hardworking" game and play on the feeling's of Onces?

I was only able to watch the clip of them speaking. Lol i didn't know they actually performed in those outfits. As an environmentalist myself, I approve. This is why I kinda side eye those no-ship album group orders. Why would you buy thousands of albums just to dump them in the trash, noh?
But yeah from the perspective of a fan, that was kinda lazy
I am sorry for bringing in other groups here. I always put them in spoiler tag as much as possible. As a former blackjack myself, I think i am just kinda numb already to all these insert-group-name-here 2.0 feelings.

As far as I am concerned these outfits have answered all my questions I have about JYPE and the plans for the future. For me I'm done wasting my time wondering and worry about decisions beyond my power.I was only able to watch the clip of them speaking. Lol i didn't know they actually performed in those outfits. As an environmentalist myself, I approve. This is why I kinda side eye those no-ship album group orders. Why would you buy thousands of albums just to dump them in the trash, noh?
But yeah from the perspective of a fan, that was kinda lazy.
I am sorry for bringing in other groups here. I always put them in spoiler tag as much as possible. As a former blackjack myself, I think i am just kinda numb already to all these insert-group-name-here 2.0 feelings.![]()
Some people aren't going to mind the outfits and others are, either way it really makes no difference since it's already done, I might as well sit back and accept it and try to just enjoy it, the protest, surveys, etc are just a waste of our time...it's better to accept banging your head against the wall only gives you a headache.

StanSpeaking about headache, I've been maniacally laughing ever since I saw this thread. https://www.allkpop.com/forum/threa...erent-japan-tv-shows-japan-domination.466126/
Idk man, I am like out of words. What shows did Twice went to with 3 native Japanese speakers, please remind me? Two possible explanations: JYP tried to play cool like BTS, BigBang, ya know, aka exclusivity bullshit, too big for shows, only doing limited an big stuff like Kohaky, which is a stupid tactic for a girl group. Or JYP never had any plan for Twice success in the first place.

Arent most of those "shows invitations" just a bunch of short tv segments with prerecorded interviews at best? I mean TWICE got this mezamshi appearance every Japanese comeback and it's nothing more than announcer reading JYPE press release while broadcasting some bts MV stuff.
TWICE had ton of those, really nothing to be envy about.

This is just Carat no really knowing much about the Japan music market, they tend to say a lot of things and it's confusing as it doesn't make sense...for example the link thread above being one of them lol.Arent most of those "shows invitations" just a bunch of short tv segments with prerecorded interviews at best? These are pretty much all just morning TV segments. The same pretty much all relevant groups...they aren't 'invitations' at all, you just book them, they're media spots.
I think they are confused as some shows are invitationals only, however none of the shows from that thread are. Well the FNS festival is sort of, it's kind of a year end show/Tv special. It used to be big and some big acts still play like Arashi, etc and I think a few Kpop groups have been on it...like BTS and IzOne before. But the ratings are really really bad these days.
